We had a great experience with them

We had a great experience with them. The main thing for the company is to clean the car up like you received it before you left, which in my opinion is just courteous. The staff was friendly and helpful. They even drove me to the metro station to return to Athens, instead of driving me back to the airport. It saved me money. I was really grateful for my experience there.

Police involved!

To anyone reading this in the future - I'd highly recommend against this company. Expect large hidden fees (in my case the fees cost half as much as the original booking).

But that wasn't even the worst of it! They require you come back to their office every 20 days to renew the contract but charge you the full amount for the 1st contract. This then allows them to pretend like they never said they would renew the contract and take their car back before your rental period has finished!

By doing it this way there is nothing the police can do. More than bad service or a dirty car. this is a genuine scam. Steer clear or learn the lesson the hard way as I did.

This was the worst car hire company…

This was the worst car hire company I’ve used in over six years of renting cars in Greece.

The advertised deposit was €480, but in small print it states that this only applies if you take their insurance. The real deposit was €690. Because I rented the car for more than 10 days, they also charged me an extra €40, claiming they had to take the deposit as a payment rather than just block it on my card.

When I returned the car, they tried to charge me for marks that were clearly just mud. The car park entrance has a muddy puddle, and as I drove in a van splashed the car. Despite this, they insisted I go and get the car cleaned (at my own expense) before they would even consider refunding the deposit.

Even then, they refused to process the refund immediately and told me I’d have to wait until they spoke to the bank. They were rude, aggressive, and clearly trying to find any excuse to keep part of my deposit.

Having hired cars all over Greece without any problems, I can confidently say this company is unprofessional and unethical. They rely on misleading small print and intimidate customers. I would never recommend them, and I canceled a future booking with them on the spot.

Avoid this company they are dishonest and only interested in taking as much money as possible from customers.

I wish I had read the previous reviews and stayed away from this company …

I wish I had read the previous reviews about the Xenos branch at Athens airport. I had pretty much the identical terrible service.
Same woman spending most of her time overselling the company's insurance and when I said I had my own she said it was invalid. Which it wasn't.
Then I noticed the extra fees notices in the office, for example, €150 fine if you put luggage inside the car and not the boot.
Also, as I was shown around the car she kept pointing our pin sized marks that if I incurred them would need to be charged. Any other company only charge for small dents and upwards.
I told her I was going to a beach area and she said if there was ANY sand in the car I would be charged a cleaning fee. I'm usually quite tidy but when I pointed out I didn't bring a hoover and I would brush out any excess sand she said they would charge me anyway. Again, most companies hoover the car after each rental as part of THEIR cost of business.
Then I pointed out that the rental office and it's dusty environment and the fact that Greece has a fair bit of dust would I be charged if the car wasn't immaculate on its return, which she replied they would expect me to have the car washed before I returned, again, in 40 years of renting cars this was a 1st.
Finally, they didn't supply me with the correct return address and it is really difficult to find it up dirt roads and around the side of a hill!
Renting from this company and the attitude of the staff caused me a load of stress that impacted my holiday so if you want to do yourself a favour go somewhere else.

Terrible experience – hidden fees and abusive staff

My problem was specifically with the Xenos Rent a Car Athens (June 2025).
At pick-up, the manager acted in a dishonest and aggressive way, forcing me to pay:

€40 after-hours fee (even though the time was already confirmed in my CarJet booking)

€250 for drop-off in Zakynthos (also clearly stated in my reservation)

€40 for a so-called “ferry tax” never disclosed during booking

Instead of €123, I was charged €454, without any prior warning.

The worst part, however, was the manager’s behavior: extremely rude, arrogant, and even threatening. She clearly told me that “any tiny scratch” would lead to extra charges, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

Someone like this should never work with customers and should be removed from her position immediately.

Conclusion:

The Athens branch of Xenos Rent a Car not only adds hidden and unjustified fees, but also treats customers with threats and disrespect.

This company ruins holidays – stay far away from them.

Worst car rental experience

We have rented a car with Xenos car rental through Discover Cars.
Our experience was unfortunately very simmilar to the one described in the previous review.
When we went to pick up the car everything was going great until the employee asked us if we wanted to contact additional insurance. We had already done that at the moment of reservation through Discover Cars so we said no. In that moment I witnessed one of the most dramatic behavior shifts I have ever witnessed as a client. She went from nice and polite to rude and almost aggressive and stating that the Discover Cars insurance was not valid for them and we were liable for everything that would happen to the car.
When we returned the car, sure enough, they found allegedly new scratches in two locations in the lower part of the front and rear bumpers. We are sure we didn’t cause these scratches, but we could not show it in the videos and photos we took initially because these were really in the rim of the bumpers. However, this is not the issue, we could have been charged and be upset but ok with the process, because these things may happen. The issue here is the dishonest behavior. Immediately upon receiving the car they searched in these locations for scratches, they knew these were there, it was very obvious.
It became very obvious this company is not in the business of renting cars but of either selling you insurance, or charging you for damage, and that is how they do their profit. I advise you to stay away if you want peace of mind. Otherwise, spend one hour checking, filming and having them signal every small dent on the paper you sign and accept that even so they may charge you for something. You can also contract their insurance and you will certainly be fine if you do, however, this is no different from paying blackmail or mafia for protection, I prefer to stay clear from such a business model.

Terrible Experience at Athens, Greece Location

We rented at the Athens airport location.

While the shuttle driver was courteous and professional, the overall experience with this rental company was the worst I have ever had. From the moment we arrived, the woman who handled our check-in was rude, unwelcoming, and aggressive. She immediately began pressuring us to purchase the company's insurance, despite our booking already including full coverage. When we declined, she warned us (threateningly) that if the car had even "a mosquito" on it, we would be held responsible. This was clearly meant to scare us into buying additional insurance and not a legitimate explanation of rental terms.

She remained confrontational throughout the check-in process and even claimed we were not allowed to place our luggage in the back seat (a rule I’ve never encountered with any rental company and which she made no effort to justify). We drove the car carefully and returned it in excellent condition. Understandably, the car had a few bugs on the windshield and some dust on the wheels, which is completely normal after driving on an unpaved road to their location.

Upon return, she walked around the car with exaggerated concern, taking photos of superficial dirt and bug splatter. She stated she would need to call her manager to see if the car could be accepted. When I pointed out that renters are not required to wash a car before returning it, she began shouting "not my problem, not my problem" repeatedly, referencing her earlier "mosquito" comment. This was misleading and manipulative. That comment had been made earlier in the context of trying to pressure us into buying additional insurance, not as an explanation of any cleaning requirement or policy. At no point during check-in were we informed of a cleaning standard or fee.

She called her manager and began speaking in Greek, presumably to prevent us from understanding the conversation. Based on her tone and defensiveness (and saying "I was very clear" before switching to Greek), it appeared her manager may have disagreed with her stance. She finally told us there would be a €25 cleaning fee. I agreed to pay it to resolve the issue. Then she abruptly added that an additional interior inspection would be conducted and we would be charged for anything they found wrong. I should have pushed back on this (especially since she had already completed the return inspection) but I was stunned and tired from the whole experience and just wanted it to end. Her tone throughout was unnecessarily harsh and disrespectful, especially considering the vehicle was returned in excellent condition.

Even her colleague, who was polite and professional, seemed uncomfortable with her behavior. I left feeling that we had been treated unfairly, and I would not be surprised if further (unjustified) charges were attempted. Thankfully, we documented the car's condition thoroughly and have insurance, but this kind of treatment is unacceptable.

In summary, the vehicle itself was fine, but the customer service, especially at check-in and return, was completely unprofessional. I would strongly advise others to avoid this company.
