In my experience, the review filtering punishes small businesses
I am writing this as a small business owner sharing my own experience and opinion.
My page has two 1-star reviews showing publicly, while around twenty-five 5-star reviews are hidden in the "not recommended" section. I disputed both 1-star reviews. One was for the wrong business entirely. The other contained an accusation I know to be untrue, and the reviewer's profile matched the characteristics Yelp itself describes as signs of a fake account. I submitted both disputes with that context. Neither was removed.
In my opinion, it makes no sense that the two negative reviews stay up while two dozen genuine positive ones are filtered out of sight. Based on my own experience, it is hard not to feel the system is built to keep small businesses anxious about their rating and open to paying for advertising. That is my honest read of it.
My experience with Yelp's sales team was also poor. I found the calls aggressive and high pressure.
One more thing every owner should know. In my experience you cannot remove or delete your business profile once it exists. You are tied to it whether you want to be or not. In my opinion that is the most troubling part, because it leaves you with no way out and no leverage. It feels like being held in place against your will.
This is my personal opinion based on what happened to me. I would not recommend any business owner create a Yelp profile, because once it is there you cannot take it down. I think Yelp's practices work against small business owners, and I want other owners to know they are not imagining it.
As a Small business owner
If I have the option I would give them -10 star review. They simply bully and annoy the small businesses to increase their ads sales. Plus hide the good reviews. Simply charges alot more than extra without permission. Absolutely trash. I called them few times today. Nobody is listening and hanging up in the middle without solving our problem. I would never recommend it. And fully waste of money. They even try to control your messages and calls with the potential leads or clients. Fake system for making money. "" SCAMMERS"
Washington New Jersey Mavis the worst
I drove to mavis in washington New jersey with a tire that needed to be repaired. The manager told me 3 hour wait for a tire that needed to be patched. I explained I would wait because I didnt feel comfortable driving on a spare , then he explain that he could not do it at all ! And he called another mavis and they would do it which was 10 miles away .. I asked him if im driving to Pennsylvania why would I go in the opposite direction then my home ,mavis is in phillipsburg. This is the worst place to stop, and they had No empathy that I was a women with a simple flat tire .. and he still turned me away .. a flat tire at the least should take 20 mins for a skilled person .I hope this get the attention of the mavis company and some policy changes happen . Even if one person is decided to just repairing flats .. something needs to be done .. washington Mavis you are the worst .. not good for buiness
As a small business owner
As a small business owner, I find Yelp's review system extremely frustrating and unfair. When false or misleading reviews are posted, businesses are often left with little to no meaningful opportunity to present their side of the story. It feels like Yelp is quick to publish accusations but slow to investigate whether the claims are actually accurate.
In my experience, even when there is evidence that a reviewer never entered the business, visited outside of operating hours, or provided misleading information, Yelp still allows the review to remain visible. This creates a one-sided narrative that can damage the reputation of hardworking business owners who have spent years building trust in their communities.
A review platform should be focused on fairness, transparency, and factual information. Instead, it often feels as though businesses are presumed guilty while reviewers are automatically believed. Small businesses deserve a fair process to challenge false claims and provide evidence when reviews are inaccurate.
Yelp has the power to influence public perception, and with that power comes the responsibility to ensure reviews are truthful and balanced. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience.
Very obviously biased against those…
Very obviously biased against those posting a negative truth and in favor of businesses. They will pull a very honest and civilized comment made by a lifelong customer of a business because it speaks out against that business they are not interested in a valid comment, only on fluffing up a business for their own gain. Don’t bother with yelp, not for reviews of businesses, nor to make comments, positive, neutral, or negative. If they will pull a valid, honest, civilized comment made about a problem made by a lifelong customer just for being negative, you cannot trust anything on the site. It’s not worth your time or effort. Seek info at a more reputable site.

Below is a direct quote from Yelp's website. They hid 39 negative reviews of a business because they felt like they weren't 'helpful'.
"Great Yelp reviews and ratings should come from consumers who had a great experience that they’re inspired to tell others about."
The thing about reviews is that some people get perks for leaving positive reviews. On the other hand, if you're really mad at a company, you can leave dozens of bad reviews and maybe convince your family and friends to leave bad reviews. It's a crap-shoot.
My experience with Yelp Advertising has…
My experience with Yelp Advertising has been extremely disappointing.
I enrolled in a Yelp advertising program after being offered a promotional credit and was led to believe I would have a clear understanding of the costs and performance of the campaign. Instead, after canceling the program, I was presented with a bill exceeding $1,000 and have spent months attempting to obtain a detailed explanation of how that amount was calculated.
Despite multiple requests, Yelp has failed to provide a complete reconciliation showing:
• The specific services delivered
• How the promotional credits were applied
• Detailed invoices and account ledger information
• Documentation supporting the final balance claimed
• A clear breakdown of advertising performance tied to the charges
What has been most frustrating is the lack of transparency. Yelp continues to state that the balance is correct, yet has not provided the documentation necessary for me to independently verify the charges.
The dispute process has been slow, difficult, and largely unproductive. Escalations resulted in the same generic responses rather than meaningful answers. For a company that serves small businesses, I would expect a much higher level of billing transparency and customer support.
My recommendation to other business owners is simple: read every term carefully, monitor your account frequently, document every conversation, and obtain written confirmation regarding cancellation policies and promotional credits before spending any advertising dollars.
After this experience, I would not advertise with Yelp again and cannot recommend their advertising platform to other small business owners.
Better yet, don't do it.
They lied about how they charge
They lied about how they charge, when they charge. After I had canceled my service. I continued getting leads that i couldn't respo to. Then they billed me again for the leads I no longer had access to respond to. At the time I'm writing this, I've been on hold with customer service for 1hr and 45 min.

I needed new tires, so I went to Tire Kingdom in Boca Raton. Mike the leader of the business was exceptionally friendly and made sure that I got the proper service
Terrible. Best avoided.
Terrible. Aggressive website constantly trying to push me to use the app.
Unreliable results as well. E.g. search on churches in Waterford and it comes up with Killkenny and Wexford in the list.
The landscaper never showed up
The landscaper never showed up. He kept messaging after making a time for arrival, but then messaged that he could not until later and never showed. I had changed and rescheduled several appointments to be here to meet up with C&E. I decided just move on.
Very disappointing.this went on for about 3 days.
As a business owner
As a business owner, I called Yelp to ask them about a review from 9 years ago, which Yelp states " review was removed due to violation of terms" yet the review is still posted on the main page. Yelp as usual was rude and dismissive and came up with some non-sense excuses. On a different occasion, we asked them why one of our real patient's review is "not recommended" and the man said AI selects which review to show.... funny how they love showing the few negative reviews and always hide the positive ones. Last incident is that someone wrote a review for a different location (not ours) they even named a doctor who works at the other location, totally provable by the website and Yelp refused to remove it or even just post it to the correct location. Horrible, evil, and arrogant company with a God-complex.
Review of Clilton Autobody Shop in Oakland
I want to recommend the Chilton Autobody shop on Shattuck Aveune in Oakland. I have been a customer for years. Last week someone scraped my car's front fender leaving white streaks. I went into the Chilton shop and the manager, Ramon Miranda, took one look, got a rag and some magic solution and cleaned off all of the paint scrapings. He would not let me pay him for his fixing my car. I would recommend this auto body shop without reservation.
I ordered a Boston Marathon certificate…
I ordered a Boston Marathon certificate advertised in the Boston Herald. It apparently "comes from" a ghost company called Run Ink. I spent $30 expecting to receive a paper certificate but all I got was an email with a file telling me to print out the certificate myself. Herald customer service will not deal with the problem and "Run Ink" cannot be emailed, the phone number the Herald gave me just rings busy and Bing maps does not show a physical location for "Run Ink". Do not order these certificates the Herald is selling.
Very Frustrating
Very frustrating. Yelp used to be a site that you could rely on when you had the need to give a review about something. Not any more. Since it like most sites now rely on algorithms instead of human involvement. Most reviews don't get published. If you do too many negative reviews the system flags you. So even if your reviews maybe negative you're denied a forum for rating an entity whether it be a business or even mental health center. If you are being judged by artificial intelligence and that is the criteria for judging whether someone or something is legitimate then nothing will ever come to light and businesses and facilities will never be held to a higher standard or accountable.
Lost my confidence!
Wonderful breakfast - cooked to individual order from a menu. HOWEVER - BIG HOWEVER:
This place completely closes at night. There is no one running the show. If you have an early flight - you're screwed because although they will check you out early. The elevator is locked up from 1 to 7 AM.
1. You can check out early. However
a. The elevator is locked up from 1 - 7 AM.
b. SO IS THE STAIRWELL ON THIS 12 Story Building. Note, I didn't check any other floor, but the stairwell door on the second floor, yes from the inside, was locked. I would strongly suggest the legal enforcement officials of the Building Standards Act and the Fire Service Act of Japan check this situation out.
This situation means there is no way for you to leave the hotel to catch an early flight. We discussed this concern with the mgt and they said they would send someone in ("a girl") to unlock the elevator, allowing us to get our bags out of the room and leave in at 5 AM which is what we wanted.
The hotel staff acted as though it was really unusual for them to have people that needed to check out early. Really? No one stays there that needs to catch an early flight? I could hardly believe it! Like I said earlier, they had to make a special arrangement for "a girl" to come in and let us out.
By this time they had lost my confidence, I was supposed to stay in limbo the entire evening and night and hope the "girl" makes it in. There was no relaxation in that thought, so I checked out availability in the Sansui, a sister hotel, and moved my wife, my eight pieces of luggage and myself there, just so I could relax a little before my long journey back to the States the next day.
Cell phone ticket
I’m trying to fight several tickets and get dismissed has made the process very user friendly!

JBU Shoe Company did not stand by their product.
I purchased a pair of shoes in October, 2025. In March, 2026 the sole separated from the shoe. The company claimed that the shoe was "out of warranty" and refused to refund or replace the shoe. I purchased the shoe for $75. I am extremely disappointed in the policies of JBU and think that they should stand by their inferior product.
