I use the Stamford branch and prefer to speak face to face rather online. Found staff to be friendly and knowledgeable. I do agree with some comments that online system does seem to be unco-perative... See more

The Melton is a modern, mutual building society that has been serving the people of Melton Mowbray and the surrounding area since 1875. Our success is built on being an independent, mutual society, that places customers (or members) at the heart of everything we do. Being a mutual means we don’t have to pay shareholders dividends. So we can share the results of our success with our members through higher interest rates for savers, lower rates for borrowers and providing better services.

Fabulous staff at the Grantham branch. Always helpful. They get to know you and always offer a personal experience . I have had an account there for over 20yrs and never had any issues at all.

Went in today, the only bank/building society in Grantham that will talk to you face to face and advise you on the best options for for your savings and also let you open an account, thank you so much.

I joined Melton in September last year and now have three Regular Savers with them. I sent off for the Issue 5 in May, which I assume prompted the email to leave a review. I do appreciate a Regular Saver with no end date.
Online application would be nice, especially when customers are already set up on the portal. It can be unnerving wondering if a form full of your personal details has gone missing in the post, but the time taken to open is consistent (approx 2 weeks to receive passbook after sending off application) indicating that they cope well at times of high demand.

We transferred all our significant savings to The Melton, as living in the local area we appreciate its community focus and more traditional ways of customer interaction.

Hi Kayleigh
I read with some interest your response to ERENBEY. so it not just politician that are selected with the facts. The BoE base rate has now been reduced by 1% and the Society has only chosen to reduce the SVR by 0.25%. At the same time it has reduced most of it high paying saving rates inline with the full BoE 1% change for example the 180 Day Notice Cash ISA has reduced from 4.5% to 3.5%.
I fail to see how the society is working in the best interest of your loyal member by only reducing the SVR by the 0.25% and taking the full BoE reducing on higher saving rates. it seem to me that there is some sharp practice going on here and the society ought to have reduced the SVR further by now.
I first complaint in March using your complaint teams email system and this seem to have failed as well.
Hence my one star review. Thanks for the reply.
I have not received a written response to my complaint since discussing the matter 2 weeks ago with your complaint manager.

When BOE raises base rate, within a week I was receiving a letter, saying my mortgage payment would go up, which was ok at that time. But now rate started to go down, despite 3 BOE rate decrease, base rate with Melton went down only once. So greedy, will switch at the first opportunity

The lovely Amanda looked after me hand & foot. It made such a difference instead of "communicating with the dead" by telephone. Keep up the good work.

I was happy with my experience in Oakham branch. The staff are very willing and friendly. They did not seem to mind that I am a bit deaf. I was treated with respect and kindness. So nice to have a human face to talk to.

Good interest rates.
I appreciate that there is a presence on the high street

Their head office was the worst customer service availability I have ever come across. Over the last 48 hours I have tried every single different telephone option trying to get through to someone and you end up with the same answerphone message whichever option you select. They also have the same prerecorded message about experiencing higher than usual call volumes ‘right now’ that they had 2 years ago when I set up my mortgage…. If it’s been busy every hour for 2 years it might be time to get some more staff… unacceptable especially when you pay what we pay for mortgages nowadays.
Update - I sent them an email and then had a really lovely guy (can’t remember his name!) call me within about 10 minutes, he was very helpful, knowledgeable and personable! I did feed back to him that I think with such a small team they need to change the way people get into contact with them because it must drive them up the wall and hiring at least 1 more member of staff would be wise by the sounds of it! Changed from 1 to 3 stars!

In August 2024 the Melton wrote to my wife about a change of interest rate in her account. My wife was unable to look after her affairs after a severe stroke and I had Power of Attorney for her financial affairs.
I contacted the Melton, explaining that I had no knowledge of the account, but they refused to talk to me, but said they would send forms for me to complete. These forms never arrived.
I left messages on their website in November and eventually did get a written reply about hoe to close an account, at the end of November 2024.
Sadly my wife died in January and once again I tried to sort out this account as part of the Probate for her affairs. It took a number of calls, and providing a Death Certificate for them to talk to communicate with me, but rather than tell me over the phone the insisted they had to write to me to confirm details. On 30th April I had a letter explaining my request would be dealt with in due course.
On 21st May I received a very brief letter telling me my wife did not in fact have any account, but was a signatory on behalf of another person, again not telling me why, but I have deduced this was an old account set up to fund one of our children's University fees.
This has been an unnecessary and needlessly distressing scenario, created by the Melton, with no though or regard to peoples feelings. Whereas the people I spoke to were polite and tried to help, the systems are not sufficiently useful to cope with unusual circumstances.
Of all the banks and Building Societies I have had to deal with since my wife's illness and death the Melton are by far the worst company to deal with.

I was opening an ISA account at the melton branch. The staff were extremely helpful. They explained everything about the account and helped me choose the right one for me. As a disabled customer they couldn’t have been more helpful.

Applications for new savings accounts have to be made by post. It took a week or two to get new accounts opened; however, once opened (by cheque) it's possible to send Faster Payments to your savings accounts & check the balances using their Online Portal. Faster Payments are received the same working day. The Online Portal is useful if you do not live near any branches (this applies to me). I understand requests for withdrawals can be made by sending a secure message.

Extremely slow processing ISA application. Applied for CASH ISA by post on 11 April 2025. Tried to speak to Savings several times. Received call back 22 April but apparently my application not received. Today’s call told my application received and then disconnected when being transferred to Investment. I cannot fund my ISA application until I am given account number. Placed further call back today 25 April but no response yet. Also emailed several times on different days about the status of my application but no response.
