Bastia airport Sixt don’t have petrol cars! And so so rude

Selected on the Sixt website a petrol car to rent from Sixt at Bastia airport and paid a third of the price higher to choose this over an electric one. When we arrived in Bastia the staff were very slow and very rude and there seemed to be multiple customers dealing with issues… it was late in the evening so when they gave us an electric we decided to leave and deal with it the next day. We called Sixt the next morning and they told us that the Bastia branch had given us the wrong car according to their online system and to drive the hour back to the airport and exchange it with the petrol car. We did so but when we arrived we were told there are only electric cars at the Sixt Bastia branch and they never provide petrol…! We said we paid more and the extremely rude staff member there said she didn’t care it’s not her problem call the Sixt company as it’s their problem (this was a Sixt employee!) and to get on with our electric car as “plenty of charging points” on the island. This was not true. We spent the rest of our honeymoon organizing our trip around where we could charge the car as we had a two week trip all over the island in remote places and the battery barely lasted three hours on the hilly terrain. Really disappointing will never hire from this company again and I would highly warn against it! We still haven’t seen the near £500 owed back to us for the overpay for a petrol car we never received but mostly we’ll never get that time on a special holiday back

Sixt Roadside Assistance Put Their Car Above Our Safety – Dangerous Experience in France

On Monday 11th August 2025, I had one of the most distressing experiences I’ve ever faced as a customer when renting a car through Sixt in France.
At around 14:00 local time, we suffered a tyre blowout while driving in the mountain pass of the Gorges du Verdon. What followed was a shocking failure of Sixt roadside assistance that left my family and I stranded on a mountain road until 20:30 — over six hours — with the sun setting and no guarantee of safe passage.
Despite making multiple phone calls to Sixt assistance and explaining our exact situation, Sixt failed to coordinate an effective recovery:
The first tow truck was cancelled by Sixt without informing us. I only discovered this when a kind couple stopped to help us, called the garage directly (we had the garage details from Sixt’s text message), and found out they’d been sent to the wrong location. Sixt never told me this themselves.
It wasn’t until nearly two hours later that one Sixt assistant suggested I send my GPS coordinates — something that should have been requested immediately. Even then, it still took several more hours before a tow truck arrived.
When the truck did arrive, it had only two seats for three people (including a child), despite me clearly stating there were three of us. The driver was prepared to take the car without us, leaving us stranded at dusk on a mountain pass.
During this ordeal, several passing drivers stopped to offer us help. But we felt obliged to stay with the vehicle to ensure Sixt’s car — their business asset — was safely collected. It’s striking that I prioritised the safety of Sixt’s property more than Sixt prioritised the safety of its customers.
In the end, we had to hitchhike to a local town. Only thanks to the kindness of strangers did we manage to arrange a taxi at a nearby restaurant. We paid for this taxi ourselves — even though Sixt’s assistance team had promised to organise onward travel. Shockingly, I never received a single callback about the taxi arrangements, despite asking repeatedly.
Throughout the six-hour wait, Sixt occasionally phoned me back to check whether the tow truck had arrived — showing clear concern for recovering their vehicle. But after the car was finally collected, I received no callback at all about whether my family and I were safe, even though I had explicitly expressed concerns about being stranded in the mountains at nightfall.
The final insult was a call I received from Sixt the next morning after 08:00, asking if I was “happy with the service.” Not once did they check whether we had made it off the mountain safely.
I want to be clear: all of my calls with Sixt assistance are recorded on their system. They can verify every detail I have described. This isn’t hearsay — it’s documented fact.
This experience has left me deeply shaken. Sixt gave every impression that they cared more about recovering their car than ensuring the safety of my family. To leave paying customers effectively abandoned on a mountain pass for six hours, forcing us to hitchhike and self-fund a taxi, is unacceptable and demonstrates a complete failure of duty of care.

Update (11/09/2025): Since posting this review, Sixt have still not resolved my complaint or reimbursed my out-of-pocket expenses. Instead, I have now received a demand for payment for the vehicle damage (a flat tyre) with a one-week deadline to pay. It is extremely disappointing that Sixt appear more focused on chasing money than addressing a legitimate complaint about leaving paying customers stranded on a mountain pass for over six hours, without safe onward travel. This only reinforces my view that Sixt place the protection of their cars and revenue above the safety and wellbeing of their customers.

The level of fraud in my rental case…

The level of fraud in my rental case with this company in France will no end take. I already gave one review with 1 star, but they finally reached back with a refund, but as a faith of goodwill.

Because they claim I picked up the car while my plane was in the air and that is why I returned late. This is claimed while their rental contract says I didn’t pick until an hour later.

I’m not thankful for the continuous lies this company keep putting out.

Don’t rent with this company in this country. They cook up lies on the fly…

Hello,
We understand your concern regarding the recent charge. Please note that the 39 EUR amount corresponds to an administrative handling fee applied for any fine received from the authorities.

This information is clearly stated both in the rental agreement you signed at the beginning of the rental and in our general terms and conditions.

We remain at your disposal should you have any further questions at service@sixt.fr

URGENT

URGENT – Sixt took my money month ago but hasn’t paid my toll fines!

I am extremely disappointed and frustrated with Sixt’s handling of my case.

I rented an Opel Mokka (GZ113DC) from Sixt Charles de Gaulle on 14-15 June 2025 with my brothers. Upon entering the car, we noticed a toll vignette and immediately called and emailed Sixt to check if it was valid — no reply (I am checking spam or junk folder daily waiting for Sixt reply).

Weeks later, Sixt charged us EUR 582 for toll usage and fines:

· EUR 66 toll usage

· EUR 360 in fines (4 fines of EUR 90 each)

· EUR 156 in administration fees

The problem? When I enter today the vehicle plate and rental dates (14–15 June) on SANEF’s official website, it still shows an unpaid amount of EUR 426. SANEF confirmed to me directly that:

1. Sixt has never paid these fines.

2. Sixt never designated me as the driver, so only Sixt can settle them.

The 60-day deadline is just 3 days away, after which fines will jump from EUR 90 to EUR 375 per fine (4 fines total). This situation is making me extremely anxious - I paid Sixt in good faith a month ago, yet they have not fulfilled their obligation to pay SANEF.

The only time Sixt responded to us was when my brother left a negative review on Trustpilot. All our emails and calls to customer service have been ignored (I am checking spam or junk folder daily waiting for Sixt reply). This shows me that social media is the only way they react.

Sixt, pay SANEF immediately. You charged me for these fines a month ago - now do your job before the costs explode.

Good Afternoon,
We regret your dissatisfaction following your previous rental.
Please note that Sixt does not pay tolls on behalf of customers, this remains the full responsibility of the driver. There is no vignette that covers motorway usage in France. However, vignettes can be valid abroad (e.g., Switzerland or Austria for example) if purchased by a previous renter.

We confirm that in the event of unpaid motorway tolls, a fine is issued by the authorities and received by our services. In such cases, an administrative handling fee is applied in accordance with the rental agreement and terms & conditions. Nevertheless, the fine itself must be paid directly by the driver.

Once a fine is processed, the relevant information is automatically forwarded to the e-mail address provided in the rental agreement. We also note that you have since received a reply by e-mail from our services.

For any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at service@sixt.fr

Absolutely terrible customer service

Absolutely terrible customer service. I booked for 5 months, the first car, the air conditioning didn't work and they still haven't been able to provide me with the SUV I booked - I was told I was 'lucky to get a car'.
Customer service won't look to fix any issues until the rental agreement has finished. They can't even make changes to a booking (reservations) if it is within 5 days. AVOID

In France only use Avis or Hertz

Please do NOT use Sixt Rental Car in France. We collected a car from Nice Airport on 18/6, and the
guy serving us did not give us a ticket to get out of the car park. we were stuck in the car park for 30 minutes.
I was given an invoice of 486.11 Euros on collection of the car. Due to our dissatisfaction with the pick - up process, the Branch Manager Trainee, agreed to give us a credit of 100 Euros.
We returned the car 1 day early on 22/6, and Sixt
took 595.24 Euros from my credit card.
When I called the Service centre, my calls were cut off 3 times ............ of course nobody rings you back, and when you do eventually get through, you have to start the story all over again because they will NOT put you through to the person you have already spoken to.
I feel cheated !!

DO NOT RENT FROM SIXT in the USA

DO NOT RENT FROM SIXT! This review is for SIXT at the San Francisco airport, not France! My family has used Sixt for our preferred car rentals for over a decade. Except for one incident in Slovenia (where individual taking in the return used a magnifying glass to find a tiny blemish) my experience has been good. Until now. A few weeks after returning the car Sixt sent me a $25 invoice for a $9 bridge toll (that I had already paid). I prepay all of my bridge tolls using the websites for this purpose. I made it clear to Sixt that I was not going to pay them. They went ahead and charged my credit card. I contacted the credit card company to dispute the charge and my credit card company reversed it. Besides the fact that I had already paid the toll how does Sixt justify charging 160% over the actual invoice? I guess the car rental fee is not enough to satisfy them so they have to try and swindle their customers out of more money! Never use a company that is culpable of cheating their clients. You’ve been warned!!!

Completely unreasonable extra charges

Completely unreasonable extra charges. Charged me over €900 on a €550 booking to drop the car off 60km from the original booking spot. I tried to call to arrange this but was left on hold without answer for over an hour over 2 calls. WORST CAR RENTAL EXPERIENCE!!!!

Rented a car at Sixt Figari and worst experience ever! I returned the car on time and after a couple hours, I receive a notification by email that the car was late and to return it soon. I called customer service immediately and they couldn’t tell me anything but wait. Disappointed by Lack of Transparency with Traffic Fines – Sixt CDG

The process of picking up and returning the vehicle at Sixt CDG was smooth, and the staff were polite and professional.

However, I’m extremely disappointed with how Sixt handled a recent traffic fine. As someone who strictly respects traffic regulations both at home and abroad—and who has never been fined in over 25 years of driving—I was shocked to receive three separate fines within just 48 hours in France.

I promptly paid all fines and reached out to Sixt multiple times, politely asking for copies of the original infractions. My goal was simple: to understand what led to the fines so I could avoid making the same mistake in the future. Instead of clear information, I received only generic responses stating that my request was "being processed." No documents, no explanation—just silence.

This experience left me with unanswered questions and unexpected administrative fees, despite my timely cooperation. A simple, transparent request turned into a frustrating ordeal.

I find this lack of transparency and customer care unacceptable, especially from a global brand like Sixt. Travelers deserve to know what they are being fined for—not just be billed without clarity.

I hope this review serves as a heads-up to other renters, and as a call for Sixt to improve its post-rental communication and fine-handling processes.

🔄 Update:

I appreciate the response from Sixt France, but I would like to clarify that I sent an email proactively on June 14th, 2025 at 10:47, immediately after picking up the vehicle.

The message was sent to the address, which was listed in the rental car’s contact details. Here's the content of that email:

---

Subject: Uncertainty Regarding Toll Sticker Validity – Opel Mokka GZ113DC

"Dear Sixt Team,
I have just picked up a rental car from your agency – an Opel Mokka, registration number GZ113DC. I noticed there is a toll sticker (vignette) already placed on the windshield, but I am not sure whether it is still valid or not.
Could you please confirm the validity of this vignette, or let me know if I need to purchase a new one?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Best regards,
Branko Petrovic"

I never received a response. If I had been informed that the vignette was expired or invalid, I would have purchased a new one and avoided the fines.

Sixt Charged a Deposit – No Refund After 2 Months!

On May 17, 2024, I rented a car from Sixt France During the rental, a €500 deposit was directly charged to my debit card. Despite the rental ending and several follow-up emails, this amount has still not been refunded.

Sixt’s customer service continues to provide inconsistent and contradictory information. First, they claimed it would be refunded within 28 days. Later, they said it was refunded — but my bank has officially confirmed that no such refund ever occurred.

Even after I shared my bank statement multiple times, Sixt has failed to provide any official refund receipt or transaction reference.

This is not just a mistake — it reflects a deep lack of transparency and potentially fraudulent behavior. It is completely unacceptable from a company like Sixt.

Warning: Think twice before renting from Sixt. Especially if using a debit card, be prepared to fight for your deposit refund.

Good Afternoon.
We are sorry to read about your experience and understand your concern. Unfortunately, with only the information provided here, we are unable to locate your rental. We kindly invite you to contact us at service@sixt.fr with your rental agreement number so that we can investigate your case in detail.

We would like to clarify that in France, a deposit is not debited from your debit or credit card. Instead, it is a bank authorization (a temporary hold) made at the start of the rental, which is automatically released by Sixt within 24 to 48 hours after the end of your rental. The release time may vary depending on your bank and can take up to a maximum of 28 days.

Since this is not an actual debit, there will be no refund transaction appearing on your bank statement once the authorization is released. Instead, the blocked amount simply becomes available again in your account.

Please send us your rental details so that we may assist you further and confirm the release of the authorization with your bank if necessary.

Extremely Disappointing and Unhelpful

Extremely Disappointing and Unhelpful Staff at Toulon Branch France

I had a flat tyre in Hyères and repeatedly called the hotline to report the breakdown, but I couldn’t get any meaningful assistance. Eventually, I took a bus to this branch in person, hoping to get help directly.

To my surprise, the staff refused to assist and simply told me to call the hotline again. I offered to call the hotline in front of them, explaining that the language barrier was an issue and that I could explain the situation in English while they helped in French if needed. Instead of offering any support, they told me to leave and refused to engage further.

One of the reasons I chose Sixt was because of its wide branch network, which I expected would be helpful in situations like this. I also paid for full protection for my rental, expecting at least a basic level of support.

This experience was incredibly frustrating and unacceptable. I expected far better service from a company like Sixt.

Sixt extortionate car protection insurance

Sixt quote extortionate car protection insurance prices on collection of the car - I rented a car for a week from Sixt Bergerac. I forgot to add protection insurance before collecting the car so had to pay on collection at Bergerac airport. I thought there may be a slight increase in the cost of protection when adding it at the time of rental, (no idea why protection should increase if forgot when originally booked, but willing to pay a little extra) but in the airport office collecting the car I was told the basic car protection on a seat atec (£30k car) for one week is €180 plus vat (€207), (basic protection offers no protection other than limiting the excess to €2500!), medium protection is €480 plus vat (approximately €560 which is more than the car hire for a week and only offers some protection!) and full protection even more. Car protection insurance should not cost this much and I feel they charge these prices as there no other alternative option. I understand Sixt tell you protection will be more expensive if taken out when collecting the car but these prices are far too high for the insurance product offered and they are taking advantage of the situation. I chose Sixt because they are a reputable company and was happy to pay a premium over other company’s for the car hire to get a better service. After this experience I will not be using Sixt again.

Please note that the various insurance options are indeed offered at the time of booking confirmation. In some cases, the rates available during the online reservation process may be more advantageous than the standard insurance rates applied at the rental desk.

However, if these options are only added in branch upon vehicle pick-up, we confirm that the standard rates will apply.

We understand your concerns and appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

Downgraded to inadequate model without notice

We booked weeks in advance a Peugeot 308 or equivalent car (CDRM class) at edhimburg airport.
At the Sixt agency , the person confirmed that we were 5 person(family) and our luggage.
He told us the car came late, we had to wait 20 minutes. (For the context, we had 5h trip to come here by plane and had still 5h to do with the car)
At the end we got a VW Taigo. We didn't notice at first, but we had doubts on the road (child complaining about space): we discovered that we got downgraded to the class below (CCMR) with a smaller car!(10cm less width) Despite checking we were five, they gave us a car designed only for 4 comfortable seats!(Cf Sixt website)
All of this without noticing us.
The call to client service during our trip confirmed the downgrade and proposed us to either change the car or to be reimbursed of the difference. We asked the second solution as the closest Sixt agency was more than 2 hour drive (back and forth).
At the end, we had no reimbursement and further call to client service explained us we had in reality been upgraded ( I let you compare space, price, & comfort of these 2 cars + on sixt website for same period, a Taigo is around 100€ less expensive than 308, T-roc, ...).
Very unprofessional and close to fraud.

Edit (23rd of July):
Thanks for your response:
- Booking has been done through sixt.fr website
- Email has been sent as proposed. Waiting for answer and will put result here with updated experience.

Edit (18th of August):
- got a first answer saying again that Taigo is equivalent to 308/T-Roc, then asked to send the email from the account address (done the 4th of Aug.) and no answer since.

Last edit (25th of August):
Last email sent again and I've been credited of the difference. Thanks! Updating from 1 to 2 stars due to the painful global experience.

Excellent car (an EV with less than 3,000 miles) rented at Edinburgh Airport, with friendly staff, no waiting time. No 5 stars only because of a little hickup by SIXT, but that was arranged to my full satisfaction.
