Red Flags with ScannX Book Scanners

ScannX sells book scanners at a significant markup, for example, charging $2500 for hardware that's available from the original manufacturer for $600. They replace the original software, which already includes essential features like OCR, with their proprietary version that locks these functionalities behind a paywall. Additionally, the software can only be installed three times before requiring another purchase. Their annual support fee is $600, and they refuse even the most basic assistance if this is not renewed. The only additional feature their software provides is the ability to charge customers for scanner use. The company hides the scanner's serial number making it difficult to use the original software and drivers. Given that many purchasers are publicly funded institutions, these practices raise ethical concerns about the responsible use of taxpayer money.
