Poor communication. Waste of time

I contacted the East of England branch of sashwindowspecialist.com and had a reply from Irvine. So far so good, I thought. He said someone could come and have a look at our house a few days later to provide a quote. (We need up to 10 Georgian sash windows renovated. Each one is different.) He suggested a date to which I agreed. I gave him my details - address, house location etc. As the date got nearer I emailed Irvine again to ask who was coming and what time they might arrive. No reply. The day arrived and I emailed him again. Yet again, no reply. I waited in all day. Nobody arrived and no contact was made. I emailed again to say no-one had arrived. No reply.
What a waste of time.

Let down in the end

Please be aware that there is a sashwindowspecialist.com and a sashwindowspecialist.co.uk, and they are entirely different organisations. This review relates to sashwindowspecialist.com.
Back in May/June 2018 we employed Nick from sash window specialist to repair our Victorian swing sash bay window. We paid a deposit but then heard nothing for around a month. Having ascertained that Nick had stopped work to care for his mother, we gave him the benefit of the doubt and work started at the beginning of July 2018.
The work went on until around 10 August 2018, it was slow progress with Nick working relatively short days due to travelling between Leeds and Leicester, as well as having other work commitments. We further had to deal with Nick having an accident on the job and smashing 2/3 panes of glass in the process.
It got to the point when the window was all but finished, but there were a few snagging issues – e.g. hinges still loose due to screws not put in, a missing hook to open a fanlight catch, no restrictors on the window panes that open.
As the job had gone on for so long, other building work had started, meaning the snagging issues could not be resolved at that point due to scaffolding blocking the window. It was agreed that Nick would return once the scaffolding was taken down to finish the job. To begin with Nick was in touch with alternative dates but this then tailed off, we repeatedly chased him and were given a number of excuses (a family illness, suicide, child births) and the last date he promised to attend (11 November 2018) he simply didn’t turn up or make contact. Calls to the supposed ‘head office’ landline simply go through to an answerphone and no one has ever called back.
We have been left with a bay window with opening panes that aren’t screwed together properly, that cannot be opened due to no hook to reach the fanlight opening, installed draft excluders have now fallen off and there are no restrictors installed on the opening panes to stop them opening too far.
All in all we gave Nick the benefit of the doubt on multiple occasions and plenty of time to return to finish the job, stating that we were happy for him to fit it around his other work commitments in the area. We have been let down and have been forced to look for another specialist to finish Nick’s work. Sadly we would not recommend using sashwindowspecialist.com.

Reply from Sash Window Specialist

Miss A,

Nick Mitchell is a name that has come to haunt me. Yes he ran his window restoration company in association with our brand name for a short period of time. Regrettably in that short time he managed to tarnish our otherwise excellent reputation, built over 20 years.

Sash Window Specialist is not one company or even a franchise but an association of individual tradesmen sharing a website and branding. Nick joined us with good references and City & Guilds craftsman certificates before being accepted to cover the Yorkshire area. Certainly the work he initially undertook was of good quality and his customers feedback was positive.

As I understand it, there was a significant event in his personal life that caused a downward spiral that he has never recovered from. He was given every opportunity to turn himself around before we were left with no option but to expel him from our group. Since that time we have had to complete 2 other unfinished projects that he started, but never finished to the customers satisfaction.

On the 28 March 2019 you emailed Liam at the Berkshire branch regarding your complaint. He replied requesting a copy of the quote and invoice that Nick had issued, so that we could look into the matter further. No reply was received and consequently no further action was possible.

As the founder of Sash Window Specialist, over 20 years ago, my primary concern has always been that a high quality of service & workmanship is undertaken by all of our branches. I can assure you, and anybody reading this, that all of our other associated branches have been providing excellent, affordable restoration work for many years. We have never used Trustpilot as each branch has a local google account where customer reviews are left.

Regards
Simon Free
