DIS-SATISFACTION WITH ORVIS FLY ROD

Bought an Orvis 9wght/9' Helios 2 Rod specifically for salt water fishing...bone fish, tarpon, etc. Also bought the Orvis Hydros V reel for 9/10wght line. Based on Orvis recommendation, I bought a specific 9 wght line for bone fish and a specific 9 wght line for Tarpon, which I put on the additional Hydros V spool that I bought. All in all, including lines, almost $1,600 on Orvis rod/reel/line recommendations. Fishing with three different professional guides, all felt that the rod under-performed and was too stiff for 9wght line. In other words, needed 10 wght lines in order to properly load the rod. Lonog story short, after two engagements with Orvis 'customer service reps' I got zero satisfaction...zero effort to remedy the situation. Of course, they all recommended that I "trade up" and buy new 10 wght lines. Throw away the 9wght lines that there staff recommended (about $200 worth of lines) and buy new 10 wght lines. Or, buy new reel and spools and mount 10 wght lines with new backing on that equipment, and then I would have the best of both worlds...both 9 and 10 wght lines. Orvis "customer Service" is certain to render NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. The worst is that personnel at Orvis seem to think that the Orvis Brand is not worth defending by satisfying a customer's complaint. Orvis fishing equipment should do what it is advertised to do. A 9 wght rod should throw a 9wght line at maximum level of performance. Of all people, the folks at Orvis surely know why a rod is designated a 9wght. Matching fly line to fly rod is not intended to be a hit or miss process. A brand such as Orvis is expected to be spot on for technical specificity. I will never trust the Orvis Brand again.

Sale or no sale

I've used Orvis fly fishing gear for over 30 years. I find myself in the market for new waders so went to my local Orvis stre to see what's new. While in the store rhe owner says to look online since he thought there was a money off offer. Sure enough the offer is for 75 off 250. Great deal. But it doesnt apply to any fly fishing gear. I called customer service to verify. Their answer was " that's our money maker so we don't discount it". Their best offer was "free shippong". Why would I want free shippong when i can go to my local store and walk out the door with them. I think i just broke my loyalty with Orvis. ☹️

Dear Orvis Customer,

Thank you for the review you recently submitted regarding Orvis Coupons. Customer service and your satisfaction are very important to us and we do greatly appreciate your feedback as it helps us continue in ensuring that we meet your expectations.

I wanted to follow up regarding the Orvis Coupons. Rod & Tackle hard goods are excluded from Orvis Coupons in effort to protect our wholesale base of Dealers. Orvis currently has over 500 throughout the US, many of these Dealers are small "mom and pop" dealerships that could not compete with these discounts and could ultimately take away business from them. I completely understand your disappointment and we greatly appreciate that you took time to send us your feedback. I want to assure you that I have forwarded your feedback to our headquarters as well for further review.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know. Have a wonderful day!

Complete incompetency

I was so thrilled to see more modern items for women that I decided to give Orvis a second chance after having a very poor customer service experience over a year ago. Following is a summary of my most recent experience with them:

They shipped my two orders to the wrong city.
They completely ignored my concern and began to skirt the issue.
They then told me that I had entered the incorrect address!
Every reply came from a different individual, none of whom ever addressed the issue.
Only after I commented that I would contact Orvis' corporate office did I receive a response (from yet a different individual) stating that they would "review" my concerns. But they made it very clear that I would not receive a refund until I returned the items!
How can I possible return items that I will never receive because they shipped to an address that does not exist? They keep my money, I receive nothing.
What is infuriating is the fact that they simply do not care about customer service. I will try my best to get someone at their corporate office to at least listen.
I will never shop there again. Never.

On Sale you have to wait 4 plus months - Regular price you can have it tomorrow!

When I ordered the horsehair belt on 12/26/2016 it was on sale for $69 plus free shipping. When I placed it in my cart I received a notice that the item would not be available to ship until May 7, 2017. To me that seemed like an excessive wait for a belt made in the USA so I cancelled it. On 12/27/2016 I receive a notice that the belt is now available. The price is now $89 and no free shipping. I contacted the online customer service and asked if they would honor the price since clearly they had mislead me by there ship availability date. I was told the warehouse had been closed since 12/23 and they have no knowledge of when they are receiving merchandise. Never did get an answer on where the May 7, 2017 date came from. Never did get an answer on how a buyer manages their OTB if they have no knowledge of what is being received in the warehouse - especially the last week of the 12th month of the year. Did receive an answer that they would NOT honor the sale price. Stating the item is not available for shipping for over 4 months when it is on sale, and the next day when it is $89 full price no free shipping is is available in all sized is just bad business practice in my book. Plenty of other retailers out there that sell nice belts too!

What a joke!

Placed an order of 5 items from Orivs, including the Bedford leather jacket at $3,295 plus taxes. Only four of the items were shipped even though the Order Summary indicated that everything was "Included in this Carton". Trying to explain that the carton arrived but that not all items were included was difficult to explain/understand. This bring me to the next issue. The jacket included in the carton was not the Bedford jacket but the Avenger jacket. Nice jacket but "sweet baby Jesus!". I did receive the initial order promptly (the order was placed 11/10/2016) but was then placed on back order with Orvis letting me know that the Bedford jacket will now be shipped 1/17/2017! Cancelled the order for what I have not received. Very disappointed but will look somewhere else for something similar in the future. Would love for Orvis to let me know how they would rate there service ...

Tried to cancel an order!

Received an email about a sale with free shipping, I placed the order and when I saw the charges I was charged for shipping. I contacted them as soon as I discovered to cancel the order. Lots of chatting back and forth but was told the order was already in the system and could not be called back. That was a bush league response. I won't ever shop Orvis again. Many mistakes on their part starting with the order. Why must I give all my information before I know the final cost and why must I look for some code to get the free shipping that they had offered me in the email they sent me. Companies track al kinds of info when it help them , but Orvis doesn't when it could help improve customer service. Juanita , the chat person must have been preaching the company line to keep merchandise sold, but it's not good

Poor Return Experience

Purchased a skirt of nice quality but had to return because it was too short in length. I received a refund far less than what I paid. I had expected $6.95 to be deducted because I used their prepaid return label. When I emailed customer service to ask why, I was told that because I used a promo code, they subtracted $25 from my return. They said they will be sending a $25 gift card to use on a future purchase. What an unfortunate policy, to penalize customers for using their promo codes! I will not be an Orvis repeat customer.

Not Ready For Prime Time

Orvis has a store about 3 hours away from me, but I have shopped there a few times while visiting town. My original opinion was that their products were of very high quality and based on the prices, the stuff should be premium. I have since had a couple of minor issues and did not think a lot about it until my recent problem.

I purchased one of their "man bags" for about $200. It looks great and appeared to be made of sturdy canvas and leather. After lightly using it for a few months, I noticed that the canvas material had pulled out from the leather trim and that the reason is that not enough material was captured by the thread when it was made. A pretty clear case of a defective product and I did not expect a problem in getting it taken care of.

After exchanging a few emails, I find that I have a number of choices. I can take the item back to the store, (3 hours away) or ship it to Orvis for replacement. The third option is that they will ship me a new one and bill it to my credit card until I send the defective unit back.

So far, pretty standard stuff. After reading a little more closely and asking followup questions, I find that Orvis expects me to pay the shipping cost to get the item back to them and they either want the original invoice or they will credit me with the lowest sale price in the last few months.

Based on the premium price for the bag, I would have expected them to send me a call tag for shipping the item back and then getting a new replacement all at no charge. As for supplying the receipt, I would ask who would keep a credit card receipt for months after a purchase? I may be nuts, but saving every receipt seems to be asking too much for a proprietary product with their logo stamped all over it. I could understand if this was a product that could be purchased from a bunch of places.

At this point, I will have to take the bag back to the store when I get to town again and hope that the store people are more understanding about an issue with an expensive item that was not very well made.

Poor inventory management

Extremely poor inventory management. Trying to purchase popular items in popular sizes takes a year of planning. Out of everything for over 3 months during the peak of spring fishing season. No help when contacting customer service. When stated would just look at other manufacturers, was told thank you....nothing else.

Ridiculously OVERPRICED !!

If you're someone that needs to satisfy your ego by buying ridiculously overpriced clothing with questionable quality, have at it ! Otherwise, SAVE YOUR MONEY by shopping other retailers, like online at Sierra Trading Post, where you can find top quality products for far less expense. I've given up Orvis - never again.

Very poor returns service, but often OK

I like many of the Orvis products and have had some good ones, but find them expensive. However, I was very interested to notice these negative reviews here on this site because I also had a very bad experience with this company. They sent me a shop soiled item that has obviously been badly kept in a store house and when I returned it to complain, they sent a replacement with exactly the same problem. I had to ship it back again and it cost even more money in postage. Their shipping costs are way too high and watch out if you have to return anything!

Extremely Slow Processing/Shipping

It took them a week to process my order and another week to deliver. Considering how popular online shopping is, one would expect them to have the same efficiency as their competitors. Will look to Amazon next time.

Horrible customer service experience with Online Telephone support and retail store

Sneaky! Sneaky is the word I would use to describe my most recent Christmas shopping experience with Orvis. I used their Orvis online coupon code "ORVIS25" which offered FREE SHIPPING and 25% off your entire order of their already insane prices.

At checkout, instead of displaying $0.00 for FREE SHIPPING they displayed a gimmicky thing called an "ALLOWANCE" at the bottom of the itemized checkout page which included the amount of my 25% off PLUS the amount of the shipping I normaly would have to pay *(while still charging /including the price for shipping in the itemized bill).

I thought this was a very strange business practice and a huge red flag since other reputable companies like Nordstrom ,Neiman Marcus, Macys, Sears, and even JcPenney don't do sneaky stuff like that.

So BEFORE placing my order I called ORVIS on their "800" number to ask what would happen if I return my two items? Would I be charged $17.50 for the "free shipping" on each item if I decided to return them? I bought these as gifts for my senior citizen Mother who is almost 74-years-old. I was told I would receive a gift card for the S/H instead of a full refund of what I actually paid for when using the FREE SHIPPING coupon code.

I then called my local retail ORVIS store and the employee on the phone told me that Orvis writes "Allowance" on their checkout page for "tax purposes", and that if I returned any item from the Orvis website to my local store that I would receive a full refund for everything that I paid for on my credit card. The Orvis employee was crystal clear that I would not be charged for the $17 shipping for each item if I returned any of them to the store from the website sale.

So I ended up going to return both items (sweater + jacket) to my local Orvis store two days after Christmas. The female assistant manager rings up my refund MINUS $35 for S/H !!!

I kindly explained to her that I spoke with employee XXX who clearly assured me that I would receive all of my money back spent on my credit card purchase, and that this was the exact situation I was trying to avoid if I had to return items. The asst. manager said I would have to pay for shipping because it's "SERVICES RENDERED!!"

Are you kidding me? "Services Rendered!!" Can you imagine a company like Jc Penney or Nordstrom or Tallbots tyring to pull that maneuver on their customers.? The manager overheard and came over and told the asst manager to give me the full refund that I was told, including S/H.

My God, the asst manager apparently is not very good at math. She spent close to 15 minutes trying to re-calculate and add everything all up for my 2 items, when all she had to do was simply add the two figures I PAID FOR on the receipts. At the end of the day she still ripped me off $5 but at this point I just wanted to leave Orvis and never come back.

I was dumb enough to agree to complete their Orvis 2-minute survey regarding my experience with their phone support from their website, and a couple days layer I get this very unfriendly lawyerly message stating that I would not get my "free s/h" costs back if I decided to return my items at the store or by mail, and that i would be receiving a gift certificate in the amount of the s/h. They told me this two days AFTER I had already purchased the items because their own store employee convinced ,me I would get all my money back.

The local store didn't even want to give me a gift certicate in the amount of the S/H. They wanted me to EAT THE COST for "services rendered" regarding the S/H. Even after I specifically called Orvis to avoid this situation.

ORVIS is BAD BUSINESS.

Orvis is so unclear about charges on their website. No where on the entire website in the Returns section or Shippong section does it say anything about the customer "eating the S/H costs" if they return items after using a FREE SHIPPING code0. Not even in the fine print of the "ORVIS25" coupon code is that mentioned.

SNEAKY!! SNEAKY!! SNEAKY!!

If ORVIS continues these shady business practices they surely wont stay in business much longer. Be an honest company. I would fully expect to lose my S/H cost if I agreed to pay for S/H in the first place. Orvis needs to be transparent with their return policy.

At the end of the day I lost $5 because of their stupidity and had a very nasty experience with a simple return. Never ever again. All 3 people i dealt with were absolutely atrocious, with the exception of the store manager who agreed to refund my S/H charges then disappeared in the back room while the asst. manager cant add to save her life.

"Services rendered!" I still can't get over that condescending look on her face.

Horrible Experience with the Chat Customer Service!

Orvis has some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced with a mail order company. Particularly with their online chat customer service. They use annoying automated messages, for example one operator said in the opening statement that she would be happy to help me with that issue and I set her straight and told her that I hadn't mentioned my issue yet. I've had bad experience with all my online chats with Orvis that just ended up returning all of my items for a refund, I will shop somewhere else instead.

Orvis' items are way overpriced and their shipping costs are outrageous as well.

Not Accountable

I bought a blazer on line. They "Pinged" my CC account 4 times for $193 each time and tied up my account. 4 days later the actual charge was run for the correct amount, but there are still almost $600 of their pre-authorization charges tying up my credit line. After numerous e-mails to their customer service, they denied it even when I sent them a screenshot of the charges on my account.
