On the 1st July 2025 I placed an order for a rat trap. They took £48.28 from my account (on order and not dispatch), immediately sent me an email saying they didn't have the product (why did they take my money knowing they couldn't fulfil the order) and said they will provide a full refund.
Over a month later I have no money has been returned, and they have not communicated with me.
I have had no alternative but to inform Worcestershire Trading Standards and and the banks.

Over £800 to deal with some rats!

We have kept about 12 chickens in our rear garden for the last 20 years. There have always been a few rats but twice yearly visits by the local Council’s pest control officer (at £18 a time) kept them under control. Unfortunately with the officer’s retirement a year or so ago the Council decided to stop the service, and instead their web site had a recommendation to use Opkill. In the meantime the rat population has exploded. My wife contacted Opkill . They wanted £80 upfront and explained that would cover three visits. The first chap came, put down a number of small bait boxes (smaller than the ones already there from the Council) and said it would be three weeks before the second visit. The rats continued to grow in number and there were no signs of dead (poisoned) rats. A different chap turned up three weeks later. He examined the bait boxes and said that no bait had been taken because the rats preferred the chicken food. (I would have thought that should have been obvious to the first person). He spent an age taking photos so that he could do a report for his boss and said he would return in a week. On the appointed day he rang to say he couldn’t make it but would be in touch. We are still waiting for the third visit. In the meantime we received a quote from Opkill to carry on putting down poison but on this occasion we would need to keep the chickens confined to their coop. No guarantees were given that this would deal with the rat problem or that they would not return. The quote was for over £800 – yes you did read that correctly, £800 plus.
Needless to say we have rejected the quote and told the company we will not be using their services again. I have the strong suspicion that the initial visits were simply to soften us up for the real job of hitting us with an £800 bill. We are in our 70’s and are pensioners. Even if we could afford to pay £800 it would be ridiculous economics to pay that amount against the few pennies of layers pellets that the rats eat per day. I have since bought an air rifle for £210 and have shot and killed a few rats and scared most of the rest away.
This company is based in Worcester and we are in Derbyshire. I do question why our local council would recommend the use of a company so far away when a simple search reveals small local firms who could do this work. Interestingly I note that the Council’s web site no longer refers to Opkill. I wonder why.

Rat problem

Opikill came and placed a trap and posion for £70. However , when the rat passed away and the smell was unbearable they then told me it would be a further £350 to have the rat removed and any holes filled. Our neighbour paid another company only £100 and they came back to do the complete the job which included removal and filling any holes.
The first guy to visit from Opkill was Gary , he was very pleasant and I understand it's not his fault about the extra charge it's the company's decision.
Unfortunately Gary fell ill so the last person sent was Ash. He was extremely rude , moaned about how to open the loft. Laughed when I told him my husband had had to crawl about to try and locate a dead rat. Got the screw stuck so he couldn't remove the trap that had been placed up there and to top it off told me a story about how he sometimes forgets to empty the van of dead rats over the weekend and how bad the smell is when he gets back in it on a Monday!

Chris Bryan - top bloke

Chris Bryan was prompt, efficient, made a thorough assessment, and clearly knew what was required. Couldn’t have been more helpful and knowledgeable, giving appropriate advice on additional interventions to prevent repeat issues. I could not have been more impressed and have great confidence in him and his company.

Tried to ring and email twice and followed up with online enquiry over 2 weeks..... Still absolutely no response. Contacting a rival company in same area and had immediate, professional response. Wouldn't recommend Opkill simply on the basis that it seems their customer service is somewhat lacking.

Unprofessional and worthless guarantee

I had substantial and expensive work done by Opkill, work with a 5 year Parts and Labour Guarantee. I first contacted this firm in May 22 to report a fault and requested a repair. I have records of numerous calls and written records of promises made that the repair work would be done. The work has not been done and I have been told that the delay was because people were on holiday, people were off sick and people had 'family problems'. I've now been told the part I have been seeking to have replaced are not under guarantee and that I should have been told this. Well, I was never told this and I have a full written 'parts and Labour guarantee' to show this is not true.
There is something seriously wrong in a business that does not answer calls (except to get new business), that appears to have so many staff problems that means appointments are broken and a firm that refuses to honour a written guarantee.
I could not recommend this firm for substantial work (removing a wasps nest might be ok as at least you can tell it's gone!) but anything more, you will be left on your own as several other posters are reporting here. It's firms like this that necessitate Trading Standards.

Update - having been told they did not have the equipment to do the repair to the work they did, I found the same firm erecting scaffolding equipment in the house behind us! I approached the workers to ask if they would be doing the repair to our property - they said they would 'phone the office'. We heard nothing and they disappeared. Really is an appalling lack of professionalism and leaves the feeling we have been ripped off.

I Feel Like Opkill Ripped Me Off

I had/have a rat in my garden. You pay £150 and a person from Opkill makes three separate visits. The first to put down poison, the next two is to check to see if the poison has been taken - the rat never took the poison.

The Opkill staff are excellent, very friendly and professional. The problem is, it's ridiculous to imagine you can get rid of a rat problem that easily. Also, on the third visit, Opkill remove the poison traps and you're left with nothing. I saw that I could've got the traps and the poison for less than a £10 on the internet. I was quite shocked how little Opkill do and how much they charge for it.

It's now five months later and we have several rats - or did. In the end my husband bought an air-rifle for the same amount of money that Opkill charged us and the problem was sorted in a couple of hours. It's not ideal. We're vegan (due to animal concerns), we have a dog and my husband had never shot a gun before. But something needs to be done about the problem, it won't go away by itself.

As I said, the people at Opkill are great, professional, will turn up when they say etc. But they'll take your money and you'll get nothing in return.

I'm not sure they have BPCA (British Pest Control Association) accreditation. If you're reading this and you don't want to shoot rats then there's things like the Sonic Rat Repeller for about £40 from Amazon, it's something we considered but discounted because of our dog and next door's cat, it also just pushes the problem elsewhere. But having a rat problem can send you mad - I know, because I have a husband walking around with a gun!, so anything is worth a try when you're at this stage. But my advice is that Opkill will take your money for doing not every much.

Feel conned and lied to have proof on CCTV

Feel conned and lied to have proof on my CCTV.

I was recommended this company by a friend on Lichfield District Council. Initially turned up to do a survey as had woodworm. I had to constantly chase them, no emails or correspondence in writing. Had them out to do a treatment and was told an hour to 2 hours to do the job. The gentleman turned up at my property after lots of chasing and still no receipt as promised. He used a kitchen jug of mine to mix the treatment. He left the container so I had a read. He mixed the solution very dilute using only 100ml instead of the 200ml needed as per label which I photographed. He stated this product was over £200 a bottle, I took photos of the product and you can buy Lignum Pro online for as little as £20 exactly the same product, his sprayer also overflowed when mixing as he put too much water in again making this even weaker. He also completed the job in 25 to 30 minutes afer initially telling me 1 to 2 hours and using 2 men. Half of the soultion went down the drain after he had finished. Told their product was guaranteed for 3 years but with no receipt I have no proof other than credit card statement. I left a reviiew on Google to which I received an angry phone call. I was promised he would talk to his manager and get someone to email a receipt. I am sick of lies and don't need the stress. I feel ripped off and conned. I am very angry and feel I was taken advantage of.
PLEASE AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS.

Failed to turn up. Twice.

I was put in touch with this business after contacting my local council for support. I paid the fee and booked for someone to come out the next day. They failed to keep this appointment but at least rang to give me some lame excuse. I rebooked the appointment for the next working day. On the morning of the appointment I was sent a text to say they would be with me between 9 and 4.30. I never left the house, never received a phone call but as 4.30 came and went I never received the service either.
The following day no one contacted me to apologise or reschedule and I have had to contact them for a refund.
Very poor service all round.
