Scam

As of today they are no packages being delivered. I want my money back. I'll report the company to the Better Business Bureau and the Fraud Department.
I want action now, this is ridiculous and it is a scam.
This is the company response-
We’re writing to you today with heavy hearts.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we’ve had to make the incredibly difficult decision to close the doors of Mountain Steps permanently. This is not a decision we ever thought we’d have to make, and certainly not one we take lightly.

Over the past months, we’ve done everything we could to keep the business going to continue creating and delivering the orthopedic shoes you believed in. But unfortunately, the challenges we’ve faced have become too great to overcome.

We know some of you are still waiting for refunds or support, and we want you to know: we see you, we hear you, and we’re truly sorry. The truth is, with the closure, our financial and operational systems are no longer able to process outstanding payments. We understand how disappointing and frustrating this must be, and we deeply regret not being able to resolve this for you.

We’re incredibly grateful for every single person who supported us whether you bought from us once or followed our journey from the beginning. Thank you for believing in Mountain Steps.

This is not the ending we hoped for, but we hope you’ll remember us for the comfort and care we tried to offer through our products.

With sincere apologies and gratitude,

The Mountain Steps Team

Proceed With Caution

I took advantage of the BOGO. It took quite some time to receive my shoes. I have diabetic neuropathy so these shoes sounded like a pretty good deal to help with my pain and discomfort that I feel in my feet. Once they finally arrived however, I really did like the way they looked. So I was definitely really excited about wearing them as I work at our local Goodwill store where I'm on my feet walking around for 4 to 5 hours. The first time I wore them to work I noticed the uncomfortable pain on the side of the top part of my shoe, kind of around my pinky toe area. I just thought to myself I needed to wear them just to get used to them. So the second time I wore them the pain was a little more intense and I decided that maybe I need a little more cushion. So the third time I wore them I wore a slightly thicker sock and that ended really badly. Before my shift was over I had to take them off. I just couldn't take the pain any longer. So I ordered some type of gear to provide some additional cushion to the sides of my toes. It does help a little but I'm sure I will not order from this company again. I really feel like they're advertisement of their shoes is false even though they do have some good reviews. The fact that they are kind of cute has made me not give them a one rating or less. I would not recommend these shoes if you are really experiencing discomfort in your feet.

Terrible, costly customer service

Mountain Steals is not a scam but my several years of ordering (and renting gear) from Moosejaw and Mountain Steals ended after a terrible customer service experience. I ordered a raincoat from Mountain Steals. It was delivered via FedEx. The package was not secured (we have delivery instructions and signs posted), the delivery person did not ring the bell/knock, and instead threw it barely onto the porch where our security camera shows it was stolen 30 SECONDS later. Fine, a FedEx issue. Except MS insisted they had zero responsibility, but gave me the runaround before eventually telling me to take it up with FedEx. FedEx has a policy that the shipper has to take it up with them, since the shipper is their customer. MS refused to submit an inquiry to FedEx and dusted their hands of the whole thing, refusing to replace or refund and refusing to take it up with FedEx. FedEx (after I submitted documentation of this) let me submit a report but due to the MS delays, it was outside the insurance appeal period for FedEx and so they denied it. I eventually had to get my credit card company involved—the first and last time I ever did a chargeback. MS denied the chargeback the first time. I submitted a BBB report and on the credit card company second appeal MS let it time out without response, so (MONTHS AND MONTHS) later I finally got my money back. MS seemed to be intentionally delaying the process (eg the delay leading to FedEx’s insurance claim window timing out and their refusal to follow FedEx’s own policies for an insurance claim). The raincoat only cost $50 and my time spent on this was worth far more, but the principle kept me going. We have had packages occasionally stolen before (hence our investment in signs, package storage, etc) and have NEVER before or since experienced this with a company—this episode taught me they do not care about the customer experience. What started as an issue with FedEx became a relationship-ending issue with MS. I recommend Steep and Cheap (Backcountry’s discount site) or Sierra.

I ordered two pairs of boots

I ordered two pairs of boots. They sent me a tracking number. I saw that the boots arrived in LA then they went to Alaska. I emailed the company and said the boots went to Alaska and I live in Missouri. They said they would check on it. I let some time go and reached out and said they will ship a new pair. Nothing. My original order was in July of 2023 and it is now middle of February 2024 and no more response from the company. This company is a complete scam don't order from them.

Wrong product shipped, yet I'm charged

Ordered an Osprey Sling and received an Osprey backpack, and then they subtracted 7.95 for the FexEx charge to ship the wrong product back to them. Total BS... 100% their error, yet the consumer is forced to pay for their mistake. Will never order from them again.

Don't do it!

I purchased 2 pairs of boots for $61 in July, 2023. They promptly sent me a tracking number. I tracked the package all the way to Alaska in August, 2023. Only problem is that I live in Arizona.
I contacted Mountain Steals customer service and they gave me the SAME tracking number and said to ask my local post office for the boots. I explained that Alaska and Arizona are over 2,000 miles away but got no response. I started asking for the boots or my money back at that time.
The last time I contacted them (in October, 2023) they said they'd get back to me in 3 to 5 business days. I never heard from them again.
PS- This happened to me once in the past (by another Chinese company) but that time I used PayPal. They refunded my money almost immediately upon receiving my complaint. So, if you are going to do business with any Chinese company (and I have had multiple successes) I recommend finding out your financial institution's guidelines, watching your stuff like a hawk, and using an intermediary like PayPal.

Poor Customer Service

I tried to order a pair boots online. Got all the way to checkout and would not process any farther. I called Mountainsteals customer service asking if there was an issue with their website as I could not process an order. The rep said the website was having an update and to check back later. She never offered to process my order just check back later. Well I check back a couple of times and still now working. I called back to customer service and explained what happened and my first conversation with customer service. I also noticed now that my cart was moved to empty. The rep told me they sold out of that size and she did not know anything about an update to their website. At this point, I am angry. One, I guess the first rep lied to me, and two I was told sorry we can't do anything for you since the size sold out. I asked she speak with manager and call me back as I figured they record calls like all other companies and wanted to know if the original rep lied to me, why she didn't offer to help by processing my order by phone. Of course the manager said she would look into but could not do anything since the size sold out that day. Horrible customer service. Instead of saying sorry but we do have other boots we can give you a deal on to make up for the poor customer experience, she said nothing she could do. Do not shop this place, you will regret it when you have to deal with their customer service. Pay a little more and for better service and less hassles. I guess the old saying is correct, you get what you pay for. In this case crappy service and no can do attitude.

Great price on a jacket

Great price on a jacket. I was nervous after reading the reviews but the jacket showed up a day early and in perfect shape. I haven't had to deal with returns but I'm happy with the purchase.

Company is fraudulent! Ordered a tent and footprint. Great price. Then email sent a day later saying they don’t have the tent. I asked what can you replace it with and not a single product nor the same discount. Completely disregarding as a customer. You are warned.

Ordered jacket for my granddaughter for…

Ordered jacket for my granddaughter for Christmas. Policy states cash refund within 30 days minus 7.95 shipping or after 30 days merchandise credit for price minus 7.95. I called since I could not get thru the website for prepaid label. I was sent a return label and then a couple weeks later was emailed and said the return policy is for Moosejaw not mountain steals even though it is printed on the receipt. So they want to send it back. They wont even honor the policy written on receipt.

Very Frustrated

Very Frustrated! I bought a pair of Marmot Randonee Gloves sized Ladies Large. I am very familiar with the Randonee gloves and sizes since I was a skiwear buyer in the late 90's. I found a pair on their site and ordered them. When they showed up I tried them on. I couldn't even get my fingers half way up in the finger holes. You could clearly see the fingers of the gloves were very short. They look like an extra small. I'm mad because they took $7.95 off what I paid to send them back. They were clearly in the wrong, these were not sized correctly. I told them that and still they wouldn't give me all my money back.

Ecco Shoes

Ordered a not inexpensive pair of Ecco Trainers and they came in a broken box with some very strange looking varnish on the sole and rubber outer sole of the shoe. No idea what it was they sent as I must have 30 pairs of Ecco’s and they are a fine premium brand. Whatever the rubber was painted in it was not genuine as the stain was coming off onto the paper the shoes were wrapped in. Hope I get my $120 back very soon as I instantly took them to the FedEx shop and sent them back.
