Money Manager for Mac is a copy of free software.
Money Manager for Mac is a copy of the free Open Source software Money Manager Ex. The website claims they are a UK based company and have been in the business since 1983, while this may be true, Money Manager is not their software - and is not written in the UK - so all of the sales information about it being a good alternative for UK users is misleading. It is just a rebrand of freely available software - just the colours and icons are different. It is riddled with errors and is complicated to use, as you would expect from Open Source software and whilst I am sure there are workarounds, and perhaps support - the website and the product are misleading. I suspect their sister company ji-shop.co.uk which sells the Windows version, is just the same with them rebranding the free Windows version. If you want to give this a go, get the original Open Source version.
I have received the following update from MI-SHOP/JI-SHOP. I think my review is fair and I believe the website is misleading, but also think it is fair to share their response:
Our website makes it clear that the software is open source and we don't claim it as our own. All the copyright notices are left intact within the software.
Incidentally, we contribute financially to the MMEX project.
As we continue to be develop [our version] it will look less and less like the original.
The software is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Under the terms of this licence, the source code is made available to software developers who can copy, distribute, change and improve the software and also charge a fee for doing so.
Once again; our website makes it clear that the software is open source.
Additionally, we offer full customer support without a time limit and for no extra charge. This is no small advantage considering the complexities of using accounting software and especially importing data from other accounting software programmes.
