Le Monde's billing department: difficult to cancel.

Four months after this event, Le Monde did refund the payment in question, for which I credit them, but I think without this Trustpilot review they would not have proceeded as they have. I still have the highest regard for the newspaper's journalism!

Le Monde sent me a notice that my rates would rise sharply for the following annual period, and I immediately wrote to cancel. I stopped getting my daily email and assumed it had been canceled, but then the bills continued and, as warned, the price jumped.

I contacted Le Monde by phone (yes, a phone call to Paris in my limited French). The phone representative could not find my accountant, so I then wrote them ... three times. Each time I got a response that, yes, my subscription would be cancelled, but each time at a later and later date.

In desperation I finally canceled my credit card! That seems to have done it.

I still have copies of these emails to substantiate these claims.

A few weeks after I posted this review I got a response from Le Monde, that was a sort of ... um .. variation of what had happened: that I had never sent my initial request to cancel; that, when they requested details, I had not replied. They asked for my bank details so they could deposit the disputed amounts. I had already set them. But they did confirmed that my subscription was only cancelled 2 1/2 months after my request, and even after I had canceled the credit card those payments were coming from.

But I recently did receive the refund they promised, and although rather late, it was in full, so while their process was slow, I am pleased that they did what they said they would.

It does seem that I did not initially follow their usual protocol to cancel, so I may have not been totally innocent in this, but they clearly did receive my later communications, and continued to bill me.

I like the layout of your site

I like the layout of your site. It is similar in layout to the NYT, another site that I appreciate. My only gripe is that not all of your articles are available in English - I am most interested in what is going on in France and Europe, but not all of these articles are translated. My home country's press does a good job of covering the international news - what I would like is info on what is going on in your country.
