Avoid At All Costs
Two sayings come to mind. One is 'you get what you pay for'. The other is 'buy cheap, buy twice'. This is certainly the case in respect of KalamataGo. Their website claims to provide a 'seamless, worry-free travel experience. Nothing could be further from the truth. Their website also claims to provide 'complete peace of mind..'. Again, nothing could be further from the truth. They claim their cars are carefully selected and well-maintained. That was certainly not the case with our Dacia Sandero, that the owner of the company claimed was a 'new car'. In my 40 years of renting cars I have never seen a new car with 72400km on the clock, or with severely damaged wheel trims, scratched bodywork, stained seats. or respray runs on the bumper.
Problems commenced with delivery of the vehicle. The claimed delivery time of 16.41 (yes, it was that specific), came and went. Trying to get through to their offices by phone proved difficult but eventually we were told it would be another hour. Over two hours later than scheduled the car eventually arrived. However, we were then told we would have to be taken to the office (some distance away) to complete the paperwork and pay. This was a first for me. I have never experienced thIs before. At the office there was a dispute over the price of the rental. My friend had agreed a price, in writing, of €32 per day, based upon the website offer of a 20% discount on normal rental price, but now we were told it was €40 per day. The girl we were dealing with phoned who I presume was the owner, but we were basically told take it or leave it. As we had made plans for the next few days, we felt we had no choice but to take it. At this point I asked if we had full comprehensive insurance. I was told yes and was shown a document written in Greek. As I could not read Greek I had to assume it was correct. However, on later reading the website it appears we were only covered for basic third party.
Later on the owner phoned my friend to tell her that because the car was an automatic it was more expensive. There is no mention of an automatic car being more expensive on their website. I wasn't party to both sides of the phone call but it was clear from my friends reaction, that she could not get a word in edgeways, asking the owner to please let her speak. In frustration my friend cut the call off.
When we were out in the car the next day my friend received a WhatsApp from the owner's husband, in relation to the price dispute, saying we could either give the car back that day and get a full refund or keep it for an extra day at no extra charge. We considered this to be a reasonable compromise and, as we had planned to visit several locations over the next few days we accepted the offer of an extra day
The next morning (Sunday) I could not get the car to start. The engine wouldn't turn over, just a click from the ignition and then the dashboard warning lights lit up like a Christmas tree.
My friend tried to call the office, but could not get a reply. She emailed and we went to the beach awaiting a response, which wasn't forthcoming. She called again and she was told to send a video of what the car was doing and that we should deal with everything as she wanted to enjoy her Sunday (Bear in mind they claim to provide a 24/7 service). My friend then got further messages threatening to call the police and report the car stolen if we didn’t get recovery for the vehicle. We called and recovery came out. He attached a booster pack to the battery but he said the battery wasn’t the problem.
Later on my friend received another message from the owner saying we had damaged the car and it was the battery as we had left the lights on. We had parked up in the dark, the lights were set to auto and they were definitely not on when I switched off the ignition and locked the car. One of the four of us would surely have noticed. However, we have obtained CCTV evidence from our accommodation the lights were definitely not on.
The owner of the rental firm then sent a video of the car starting and said come and get it; no offer of delivery to us as we were some kilometres away. We didn’t want an unreliable vehicle so just said we would pay for the one day but they refused to refund us or supply a replacement car. Our plans for that week were ruined.
In my 40 years of renting cars abroad, I have never experienced such poor customer service, such poor quality cars. As I said buy cheap, buy twice. Don't make the mistake we made.
