I’ve used Howdens for years and always been pleased with products and service . Always have a great relationship with staff etc but as of late pricing is going up and up constantly to a point where b&q and wickes are by far cheaper than a supposed TRADE retailer. The whole point of trade pricing is so we can pass that saving on to our customers or maybe put a small margin on and make a few £ off materials and should still make a saving on public prices for our customers. I’ve been in the trade for 27 years since leaving school and I completely understand that because of brexit prices have rocketed up but today I sent a lad in to my Howdens branch for 2&1/2 oak newel caps , when my phone pinged with an email I nearly dropped when I opened it to see an invoice for ( I kid you not ) £87 !!!!!!!!! £87 for a product that I use to buy as a company md for around £3.50 !!! I thought surely not , this has to be a mistake !! Now I totally understand that every company exists to make money and we all put a mark up on our products so we can survive but £3.50 to nearly £35 is an absolute joke !!! Worse then that it’s day light robbery!! Absolutely disgusting greed of the highest order !! I’ve obviously sent the caps back for a credit note as I went to another local joinery trade supplier (who I tend to overlook and am loyal to Howdens) and pick 3 full oak newel caps up ( not 2&1/2) for a bank busting £20 !! So obviously the supply is still there for a small company to make a few £ and sell on to trade at a good price but not for a massive company like Howdens . Apparently Howdens supplier charges £54 for the 2&1/2 newel caps !!! Utter rubbish I suspect or if that’s the case ditch your supplier and I’ll put you on to a good local joinery supplier and you could still make a few £ but still be in the right ball park !!! Even b&q do the full oak for £23 -my 5% trade discount £21.85 !! And still make money but no Howdens need £35 , gobsmacked is an understatement!!!!!
