I had a wonderful experience touring…

I had a wonderful experience touring Highgate Cemetery, made even better by our guide, Peter. From the moment the tour began, Peter’s deep knowledge of the cemetery’s history, architecture, and notable residents was clear. He brought the stories to life with engaging detail, blending historical facts with fascinating anecdotes and a great sense of humor.
The atmosphere of Highgate is already incredibly evocative, but Peter’s storytelling added real depth and meaning to what we were seeing. He answered questions thoughtfully and made sure everyone felt involved, never rushing the group while still keeping the tour well paced.
This tour was both informative and memorable, and I left with a much greater appreciation for Highgate’s cultural and historical significance. I would highly recommend this experience—especially with Peter as your guide.

Highly recommended

The highlights tour was fabulous. History about the cemetery and about some of the interesting people buried there. Enthusiastic, positive guide made it easy to relate to and ask questions.

Such a good day out

Such a good day out, beautiful location. Well worth doing the tour, John was full of information and didn’t mind questions and shared his wealth of information with the group.

A recommended must do for all walks of life!

We prebooked and opted for a tour of the cemetery for an additional £8.00 plus the £10.00 entrance. The tours ran every half hour from the entrance and our guide Paul was the most fantastic host. Informative, respectful and joyously witty when telling certain stories. The tour lasted approximately 75-90 minutes.
I would thoroughly recommend a visit and include the tour.
Helpful tip : Wear comfy footwear

Fascinating look at another side of London's history

I have always wanted to visit Highgate Cemetery and I am so glad that I finally did this. It is such a beautiful place and has such a fascinating history. It's not only Karl Marx who is buried there!
Julia, our tour guide, was absolutely brilliant, mixing her great knowledge with touches of humour and conscientiously pointing out all trip hazards. I would really recommend this tour to anyone interested in the history of London, but not if you have mobility issues.

Fascinating Place

We’d been talking about wanting to have a wander around Highgate Cemetery for ages so decided the only way to get the most from a visit was to book ourselves onto a tour of the west side, Wow, how pleased were we. A big thank you to our tour guide Joe R who showed us around today. He was very knowledgeable, passionate and engaging, he really did make the tour very interesting. The tour took around 1hr 30 mins which went incredibly quickly. We’ve already recommended this to family as an absolute must to visit. Definitely give it a visit, you won’t be disappointed.

Highly recommend

The hour and a half tour includes key graves and visit to the catacombs in the old part of the cemetery then you can cross the road to the less ancient part and visit unguided. Our guide Nigel was very informative, always interesting and personable, and obviously passionate about this fascinating place which is full of history and human interest. Wear comfy shoes with thick soles, some of the paths are a bit stony.

Beautiful Highgate Cemetery

We went for a guided tour of the West side first, our guide Julia was very friendly and informative, loved hearing all the history of such a beautiful place and even had a family of foxes come out and wander around. We then went across the road to the East side which was equally stunning. We could’ve spent the whole day there, a lot to see and hear.

Fascinating and beautiful at the same time

Fascinating and beautiful at the same time. Guide Martin is a font of knowledge.
We enjoyed a hot sunny Sunday afternoon West tour at 1pm.
Martin answered so many questions along the tour and was sometimes fun and sometimes deadly serious, and always very interesting.
Too many highlights, but do see the memorial for Thomas Sayers.
Some Visiting Advice:
1. The West Cemetery paths are pebbly and uneven, so do wear good walking shoes.
2. There are limited facilities on site, so bring a water bottle.
3. The tour is about one hour but you may like extra time afterwards to re-trace or look along other paths, and explore the other East or West side.
4. Do buy the guidebook, it explains so much more, and gives you a fuller appreciation of the Victorian perception of death, status, symbolism and religion at the time.

Fantastic

Absolutely brilliant & completely fascinating. We did the west side tour with Steve who is incredibly knowledgeable & full of interesting facts. He kept us fully enthralled for a good hour & a half. We then wandered around the east side & bumped into John, another guide, who was happy to spend time giving us more information. We would 100% recommend a visit here. Wrap up warm, wear sensible shoes & immerse yourself in some amazing history.

Exceptional experience

We had a tour of the west side of the Cemetery and although the tour lasted about 70mins the amount of information and the level of detail was brilliant. Fantastic guide and I would recommend this to anyone.

Interesting tours at Highgate Cemetery

On a chilly Sunday in January we met with a surprisingly large group at HC and were welcomed by an enthusiastic volunteer guide called Martin. The tour lasted for an hour and half and it felt like no time at all as Martin’s guided tour was both informative and entertaining, chasing all cold winds away! The tour introduces you to a range of inhabitants, often rich and famous, whose histories are either remarkable or mundane but all were communicated with an infectious enthusiasm by Martin with quips, gossip and hearsay that delights . Highgate Cemetery tours are well worth it - they offer a window into the Victorian era - its values, interests, landscaping and it’s architecture - fascinating. Martin suggested that we should feel ‘morally refreshed’ - we did!
