Never and ever rent a car from Hertz
Never and ever rent a car from Hertz. This is a horrible company. We reserved a car for our trip in France. Very long waiting at Orly, more than an hour. Very slow service and every third reservation was not valid for the company. So the people who rented a car months ahead were absolutely lost with no solution. Finally, after more than an hour, we got a car. We booked a manual, we got an automatic. We booked an Opel, we got a Peugeot, but we are still happy because at least we had a car. Only after 10 minutes' drive, when we realized that the air conditioning was not working. It was 35°C outside and we had to travel for a week with this car. Of course, we tried to contact the company without success. Phone, emails... no answer. We've been planning this trip for more than a year and we had a terrible one because of Hertz. Even one star is too much for their service.
Scam - be aware !!! Hertz cannot get away with this level of service !!!
(My wife) Picked up car at Lille station. Fuel level was not fully (7/8), so was told to bring it back full and get difference reimbursed . Brought car back - nobody to inspect / sign off / check car. Received a few days later bill with supposed damages added, no adjustment for fuel and charge for bringing car abroad (Belgium) which had been prepaid. Wrote to contest and simply received email saying “after further examination, no price adjustment needed”…. Request for detail on damages went unanswered , fuel and extra charges neglected. A total scam - cannot believe Hertz (as agent for booking through Thrifty) would do it and can get away with this . Looking into legal options on our side .
OUTRIGHT THEFT
OUTRIGHT THEFT After cancelling a hire in line with the terms and conditions of the contract (four days ahead of the refund cut-off) I receive an email confirming that the hire has been cancelled but no mention of the refund being issued. Hertz have no phone contact options that are answered by anyone so I only received short responses via their Chat option telling me they are looking into the matter. Days later there is no update for a standard refund. No modern company does business like this and their lack of customer support and simple delaying tactics violate basic consumer rights. Please don’t use Hertz under any circumstances. I have lodged all documentation with Fair Trading and I’m sure their involvement will be the only way the company pays me back a simple refund that every other large company does automatically. Will obviously never use again and will take my complaint as far as it will go.
Beware hidden dynamic conversion costs.
Hired from Biarritz. Car was fine and the lady at the desk was friendly. However, we paid for extras - 2nd driver, taking to Spain and the full cover to give us no excess. This payment was not taken at the time of hire or on return but was deducted from the deposit after return of the car. Therefore it was not apparent until I got the final invoice that they had chosen to use dynamic conversion to charge the extras, thus costing me more. They at no stage said dynamic conversion would be used or gave me the option to choose this - I always choose to pay in local currency as it is cheaper. By just deducting it from the deposit rather than processing it as a separate payment, they deliberately hide that they are using dynamic conversion, because if they processed it at the desk the card machine would give you the option to choose. Customer service claim that we signed for this. It was the usual shove a sheet of paper at you with the instruction where to sign. This was also done with the people in front of me in the queue, and no mention made to them either of dynamic conversion. Very dishonest practice on their part which must make them a lot of money from customers.
Awful Company
Hired a car from Lille Gare on 15 May and returned it on 18th. Took HD video of the car as insurance against and claim for damage, and got additional charge for bogus damage a light scratch to the leading edge of the door. My video is detailed enough to show this is not present. This is a SCAM. I'll be fighting this claim every way possible. Avoid this company
Extremly bad company
Extremly bad company. Do not rent cars from Hertz. Our car broke down after an hour and we have not been able to get anything back from our rent. We even had to pay our own bus tickets back to the airport while also paying full rent for a broken car....
They don't reply to our emails or phone calls.
We arrived at the airport of Lyon
We arrived at the airport of Lyon, on a rainy Saturday afternoon. We vere going to Val Thorens, in the mountains, because of this, we had checked with HERTZ International, that the car, we had offered, was equipped with winter tires. We had ordered a Volvo XC60.
Arriving at HERTZ rental office in Lyon, they informed us that the, Volvo didn’t have winter tires. Now a very abusive behaviour started. And the bill was up to 1200 euros more, beside the 500 euro we had paid, to have a car with winter tires, the car was a Ford Focus. Parked next to the Volvo. It ended after 40 minutes of diskussion with no signatur no car threat. The person was assumingly very bad in English. We signed under protest to get away and reach our hotel in the evening.. We negotiated a partial refund from HERTZ Uk.
We will never hire a car with HERTZ again
Hertz’ deceiving practices
When I arrived at the Hertz’ agency near Lyon to pick up a Peugeot 2008 I had reserved through Travelocity, an employee named xxxx said, “we don’t have Peugeots but I can offer you alternatives.” Taking me to the lot, she showed me a hybrid Lynk & Co car adding “it’ll cost you 25 euros per day plus tax.” Because I had rented that same car make and model from Sixt car rental the previous year and liked it, I said OK. Back in the office, she went through an unusual process: holding a small screen in her hand, she asked that I accept or reject - with my fingertip - collision coverage etc. I refused all but the “upgrade” after she explained it just meant a car different than the one I had reserved. To be sure, I asked she confirm that the rental price would be the same ($1,089.79) she replied, “yes but in euros, it comes to 750 euros plus 319.68 euros of tax.” She then asked for my credit card and put it through a card reader she held in her hands. Although the universal procedure is to place the credit card reader on the counter where the customer can see all charges before inserting his/her card, I had no reason to question her honesty. She then printed three documents including her phone number, instructions to access road assistance, and a receipt, all of which I placed in the car’s glove compartment and drove off to my destination an hour and a half way.
Twenty two days later I couldn’t open the car. I called xxxx (33-04-51 08 70 91) to inform her. She suggested I contact Hertz directly by email. When Hertz called back a couple of days later, the rep told me to call Road Assistance but I was able to convince her that it was Hertz’ responsibility to retrieve its unusable car parked on my front yard. Several days later a hitch trailer came to pickup the car (I took a picture of car loaded on the trailer). A few days later I received the Hertz bill that included previously undisclosed information and false data.
1) Undisclosed information: the bill listed 942.67 euros rental cost plus 750.00 euros for the "upgrade". Had xxxx disclosed to me that the upgrade would add 750.00 euros to the total rental cost or had she placed the card reader where I could see those charges, I certainly would not have rented that car.
2) False data: The Hertz’ invoice indicated the car was “returned on 27/08/2024 at 12:30” instead 19/8/2024, the date when the car battery died and the car became unusable. In response to a subsequent email from Hertz “collection Team” I offered to pay 784.43 euros: That is 1,069.68 euros quoted to me by xxxx multiplied by 22 days of car use before the battery died, divided by 30.
Pay More, pay more
I paid for the Hertz car, and I paid an extra "full protection insurance for your car", and the Hertz desk told me if I wanted to pay even more additional insurance to avoid thousands if I had an accident. Then I was told to sign for previous damage before even seeing the car. The passive agressive personnel of big corporations is just dreadful! Avoid like the plague!

Rented a car through Easyjet with Hertz. In France Lyon airport. The process was not easy, as we bought insurance online as we booked the car, and Hertz could not see this in the booking, so they tried to sell us one more!
And there was no possibility to choose vinter tires og snow chains in the booking, so I had to contact Easy jet afterwards, to make sure we could have those with the car. When we arrived late in the evening, we got a car without vinter tires, and the only car we could get with, had a cost double the price we already paid.
So be prepared for ekstra cost with Hertz/Easyjet!!!!
Worst ever car rental company
Worst ever car rental company. Avoid !
Hidden charges.
They will even send a collection agency against you !!
My advice, take your business elsewhere ...
Thieves
Thieves. They didn’t return our security deposit, which was around 600 euros. We tried everything to get it back, but they refused.
Edit: So many people have the same problem in Montenegro, Podgorica Airport. I think Hertz in Podgorica just scam people, it's shocking that company like Hertz allow them to continue to do it. Unbelievable
Inexcusable Service and Customer Care
I booked a car with Hertz for 5:30 PM and even called the day before to confirm everything was in order. Despite this, I arrived at Geneva Airport at 6:10 PM to find their French-side office closed.
No one informed me of their 6 PM closing time during my call, nor did they ask for my flight number to anticipate potential delays. This is basic professionalism that was completely lacking.
To make matters worse, customer service showed no interest in addressing the issue or compensating for the inconvenience. Left stranded, I had to rent a car from another company at a much higher price.
Absolutely unacceptable service and lack of accountability.

Be Cautious When Renting from This Company
Be very careful when renting a car from this company. Their vehicles often have scratches from previous users, and if possible, they will try to charge you for repairs. Always take videos, pictures, and report even the smallest scratches, including those on the inside edge of doors, as they will hold you accountable for them.
I was charged €211.63 for a tiny scratch—barely a millimeter—on the edge of a door. The scratch was not visible when the door was closed, yet the inspector opened that specific door and claimed the damage was my fault. What’s suspicious is that only this door was inspected in such detail.
This isn’t about the money; it’s about being unfairly accused and the way I was treated. Make sure to document everything thoroughly to protect yourself.
AVOID HERTZ BORDEAUX GARE
AVOID HERTZ BORDEAUX GARE - FRANCE!!!!!!
I received an email regarding the special cleaning the car was needed.
When I got the car it was NOT cleaned and it also had a very strange odor. I should have let them know but we were already late.
I asked them to check on their records if this is true or not. I am also quite sure I didn’t make any damage to the car. As you haven’t cleaned the car before delivering to me the same should have happened with damage check.
This was sent on 26 October. I got a response that "Votre numéro de référence est le 24222484" and that I would get a response within 10 days.
10 weeks later I still wait for them to respond despite following up.
AVOID HERTZ FRANCE!!!!!!
Take a lot of pictures
Take a lot of pictures, they will charge you what they can even something difficult to see. In my case an impact on the windshield (honestly something ridiculous and already there). 83€ because of course they need to block the car for 1 day to repair it (yes of course). There is no shame there.

Next time I rent I will read the reviews. They rented me a car needed for the Alps with no winter tires. Research, Research, Research. Customer service in Europe does not exist. Rude and ignorant is their way of saying they hate their job and country.
Follow Up to Nov 28 Review - They relented after much work on my part.
I posted a review on November 28. After that review, Hertz continued to insist that I had put the wrong fuel in the car, which I had not. I wrote multiple emails about this and they changed their tune. They said instead that the car that I returned had traces of "ADBlue" in it. ADBlue is apparently a supplement put into diesel cars. The car I rented was not a diesel car. I did not know what ADBlue was prior to this allegation being made. I then demanded the service and inspection records, as well as the rental records for the vehicle. Initially, Hertz did not comply with my requests. However, I continued to press them and ultimately they withdrew their demand and "apologized for the inconvenience". Beware of this company and its fraudulent behavior.

I have no luck here trying to get money back for a scratch they lied about, this is fraud and they need to be held accountable for is there an ombudsman for these kind of fraudsters.dont use dollar thrifty or hertz they will only rob you
