INFO FOR THOSE WISHING TO GET CAR PARTS RE-CHROMED.
For those who have a hobby or are in biz, restoring classic cars and many are these days especially with covid keeping men indoors, you may need to have metal parts rechromed. I've been involved in this biz for 60 years and nowadays it is getting hard to find an honest and competent company doing this. My recent experience will show you what I mean.
My local companies have either disappeared or don't want to do car parts anymore, and as I saw a this company featured on the TV show 'The Bike Show' I thought they must be good, so gave them the front and rear bumpers of a Daimler V8 MK 2, I am restoring. Big Bumpers and heavy with 4 over-riders too. They took 3 months (Covid excuse) and after refitting, it took only a few rain showers, a number of small rust spots started showing in the same places there had been original rust on the back bumper and on the over-riders. I must point out that that original rust was only light as the car had been garaged all its 55 years of age.
I know from experience that if the plater does not linnish away all the rust areas down to clean metal, this will happen. Now as the cost had been £1250 I complained. The front bumper which had litle original rust and at the time didn't appear to be rusting again, so I let that go. The owner was quite grumpy in all my dealings with him and took a month to re-chrome it. Guess what? Again after only a few showers on it, it is again showing specs of new rust and the front bumper has now also developed many rust spots.
It is obvious that this company has no idea how to prepare car items prior to plating and or isn't plating to high standards as I can see many pinholes within the layers of plating. So Beware of this company.
