Greenback Taxes for Expats is The Way to Go

Greenback Taxes has a team of highly experienced CPAs who work with American expats and non-us citizens who owe U.S. taxes. It's important to have accountants who understand tax preparation for the unique needs of an expat, and I'm always happy to recommend a good company when I find one.

Lack of urgency, unclear guidance, and issues requiring escalation

I worked with Greenback on my 2025 US and DC tax filings, which involved a substantial and complex cross-border transaction. While the return may ultimately be technically correct, the process raised serious concerns about communication, judgment, and overall ownership.

Despite the size of the tax liability, I was advised that filing by April 15 was not necessary, without a clear explanation of the risks or potential penalties. This was particularly concerning given that tax is still due by April 15 regardless of the filing extension. As a result, I am now facing interest and penalties that could likely have been mitigated with more proactive handling.

I was also urged to make an extension payment of approximately $140,000 based on an initial draft. However, this estimate was provided before my full cost basis and capital improvement data had been incorporated into the calculation. I requested a detailed breakdown of the estimate (including gain, depreciation recapture, and tax rates), but this was not provided at the time. The estimate was later revised to approximately $112,000. A discrepancy of this magnitude should have been clearly explained before recommending that a client move significant funds.

In addition, I identified a material issue in the draft return related to the treatment of foreign taxes on a large capital gain. The return initially did not appear to properly reflect the foreign tax credit, creating a risk of double taxation. I had to request a senior-level review to have this addressed, rather than this being caught as part of the normal preparation process.

There were also other oversights, including the handling of the DC filing requirement, which added further uncertainty.

Throughout the process, I repeatedly requested timely action and clarity on next steps. Despite this, key steps were delayed until the final day, resulting in a compressed filing process and unnecessary stress.

There were also inconsistencies in the filing instructions provided. For example, I was instructed to sign a page of the DC return that does not actually contain a signature block.

Overall, my experience highlighted issues with communication, transparency, quality control, and ownership of the process. These are critical in complex, high-value tax matters and, in this case, required significant follow-up and intervention on my part.

My 5 year experience with Greenback Expat Tax Services

I have been using Greenback for my US foreign taxpayer obligations for five years. They have consistently made the ominous activity of completing US tax reporting requirements as easy and less burdensome on me as possible. Everyone has unique or complex issues and they handle them quickly and efficiently without throwing any additional burden back onto me. The entire process involves completing a simple questionnaire, sending a copy of your final foreign tax return (with brief translations where needed), supporting documents like 1099’s and W2’s and that’s all. Then in a week or so your done, electronically sign your return and they do the filing and keep you informed of the process. That’s it, simple and fast with no frustration or anxiety.

Greenback really is worth it

Greenback really is worth it! I've been working with the same accountant for the past five years. She's responsive and efficient. She's attentive to detail and really keeps up with changes in the tax code -- it's so complicated and it changes all the time. She gives me peace of mind -- I'm so grateful for the service they provide!

Ms Sudhakar is meticulous

Ms Sudhakar is organized and meticulous. In addition to the usual accountant-side tasks, she kept me focused on completing my share of the work without being overly pushy when following up. Most importantly, she addressed my confusions and uncertainties both clearly and succinctly.

I could not ask for a better experience with an online-only business relationship.

The Agent was reasonably responsive

The Agent was reasonably responsive, although I wish the Agent would confirm receipt of my messages a bit more promptly. I also felt an unnecessary pressure with upselling (need for completing additional Schedules); especially so since I am a finance professional. Knowledge of the Indian landscape such as familiarity with the Indian Tax Return and matters like flexi deposits was lacking. Overall, satisfied with the service level.

Excellent service

Rakhy was excellent. We had an initial consultation before I moved from the U.S., and I was pleased she was available to do my return for me. She answered my questions and was careful throughout. Some responses could take time, but I was working with her at a busy time in March and April. The price was fair, too.

Decline in customer service from accountants and zero accountability or care factor

I have been using Greenback for years. However, I have noticed that their customer service and quality has recently declined significantly. They do not answer general questions about your taxes without first charging a consultation fee. They also made a pretty large error on a return from a few years ago and are refusing to acknowledge or provide any advice after I received a bill from the IRS. AVOID.

Update: I am still very disappointed that after over a decade of using Greenback and the SAME accountant for that whole time, he still did not respond to my repeated attempts to contact him regarding an IRS notice about an error from a past return. Only after I posted my review and their customer service team got involved 3 weeks later did he bother responding, and then only had a cursory glance over my case. While he said I had not provided the information in the IRS notice, I had to look back in the archives of their site to see that I had indeed supplied the referenced Form 1099 which was confusing how a discrepancy would occur. I ended up finding the error in which one of the forms I had submitted was from the wrong year. I would expect that using a personalised tax service like Greenback would come with some extra scrutiny and pick up on an error like this. After a few accusatory and curt emails and with zero explanation of how anything would work and with only 5 days until the deadline to respond, he said for an additional $565 dollars they could amend the form "and generally speaking, doing so will resolve the issue with the IRS in a timely manner." When I asked if this would also help with the penalty and interest, I got nothing.
Customer service did get involved and said they would escalate my questions about a reduced fee "as a gesture of good faith" but at that point the deadline was too close to wait any longer. With no indication that the $565 would get me any reduced penalties or interest from the IRS, I just paid it all and resolved it directly with the IRS.
I won't name the accountant specifically, but if that is the care factor that they put in to anything more complicated than a basic return, you might as well use TurboTax.
