Excellent TESOL Certification Experience

I had a great experience completing my TESOL certification with Global English. The course was well-structured, clear, and very practical, with useful materials that I can immediately apply in real teaching contexts. Everything was easy to follow, and the support provided throughout the course was professional and efficient. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a solid and reliable TESOL certification.

Disappointing Phonetics Course

2 stars

Although I now know more than nothing about phonetics, I have no confidence in being able to use the ‘Introduction to Teaching English Phonetics’ course in real life. But I got a great discount.

My biggest issue with this course, and others, is the consistent almost complete lack of any practice questions and exercises. The only chance to ‘practise’ is usually only with the exam questions – obviously meaning no chance to try things out before being marked. This means that although I mostly got good marks in the exam questions, that I have no confidence in having understood the content well or being able to use anything when teaching. It could be much improved by having current exam questions used as exercises and adding exam questions to encourage real understanding. But apparently I’m in a minority of needing to practise!

Another huge problem is that inexplicably there is no index, as with other courses, so that finding anything months or years after completing a course is often laboriously frustrating.

I am confused by conflicting information, because although my tutor repeatedly told me to never use phonetic symbols with students, the phonetics exam lesson plan sample includes using symbols with students!

I found some course information extremely frustratingly confusing, especially as the lists of words re minimal pairs with unvoiced/fortis and voiced/lenis lists in module 2 did not underline the letter/s that related to the phonetic symbols. For example, I thought that the symbols relating letters in cloths/clothes related to the ‘s’ sound, but I found out later that it was meant to be the ‘th’ sound! That problem should have been avoided with adequate information, as there were no videos to listen to these sounds. Either underlining relevant letters and/or listening to the sounds would have completely avoided such unnecessary confusion. This sort of problem led to a huge waste of time as I kept struggling to understand the information.

The above issue re a complete lack of underlining relevant letters and providing essential listening videos continued with module 3 re symbols and vowels, plus another query. Here is a question I asked my tutor:

“In module 3 there are 13 examples of vowels in the 2 lists, not 12 as it says in ‘PH module 3: 04/20’ and the interactive phonetic IPA chart only also has 12. So why does the course have 13 examples in its lists, and if one is extra, which one is it?” My tutor said that this question had been an issue when writing the course – but presumably unresolved!

The above issues that I had with unclear/conflicting information in the course material was compounded by what turned out to be technical issues with my computer viewing the phonetics symbols for exam questions – BUT even though this was apparently a known problem, I could not see any information anywhere to bother informing students that there might be such technological problems. I had huge problems with some exam questions because it turned out, after hours of fruitless labour and then asking my tutor, that my computer was not viewing the phonemic script correctly. So I hope that the course providers might bother to inform future students of this possible technological problem to save others wasting hours of extreme frustration. I thought that I was the problem, yet again, because I did not understand the phonetics symbols, but I was NOT the problem – but the way my computer showed the symbols on my screen was!

I also usually find too many typos, although I’ve given up on providing feedback to office staff as I don’t recall them responding.

I usually only pay for a course if there is a discount, so I get my money’s worth, however frustrating courses can be at times. But some courses, especially the Spotlight ones, have been (very) helpful. It’s just a pity that this phonetics course feels so disappointing overall. It seems like I’m the only student to have struggled so much (as my tutor told me when I asked for help) but maybe other students have all had more experience than me, even though it is meant to be an ‘introduction’ to phonetics. It has certainly made me feel rather stupid because I’ve struggled so much.

Ironically and sadly, completing this phonetics course has decreased my confidence in my ability to study and teach. Thankfully my students respond positively to my lessons and we have a good rapport, or, based on this course, I would feel all too inclined to just give up!

Reply from Global English TESOL/TEFL

Thank you for taking the time to leave such detailed feedback. We’re genuinely sorry that this course did not meet your expectations, and we appreciate the opportunity to clarify several important points for prospective students reading this review.

First, it’s important to be clear about the purpose and level of this course. The 30-Hour Introduction to Teaching English Phonetics is a specialist professional development course, designed for teachers who already hold a foundational TESOL/TEFL qualification and who wish to extend their knowledge into phonetics and pronunciation pedagogy. It is not intended as a first-step or general training course, nor as a substitute for a full TESOL qualification. This is stated clearly on the course page, including a full module breakdown and content index, which directly addresses the claim that no index exists.

Secondly, phonetics is a technical and theory-driven discipline by nature. While applied examples and assessments are included, this course deliberately focuses on understanding phonemic systems, articulation, and transcription rather than repetitive classroom drills. The assessments are designed to test conceptual understanding — which is standard practice in specialist phonetics training. Students seeking a highly practice-led, classroom-simulation approach are usually better suited to our general TESOL or pronunciation-focused methodology courses rather than a phonetics module.

Regarding phonemic symbols in the classroom: there is no contradiction in the guidance provided. As discussed in the course, phonemic symbols should not be overused with learners, but they can be introduced selectively and appropriately, depending on learner level, context, and teaching aims. This is a widely accepted position in English language teaching and is reflected in the sample lesson plan you reference.

On the technical point raised: phonemic fonts and IPA rendering can vary by device, browser, and operating system. While this is not something we can fully control across all user setups, tutor support is available — and in this case, the issue was identified and resolved once raised. We will, however, review how this information can be communicated more clearly going forward.

Finally, we’re genuinely sorry to hear that this experience affected your confidence. That is never our intention. However, it’s also important to say — respectfully — that this course may not have been the right fit for your current background and learning needs, which you yourself acknowledge when noting that other specialist and Spotlight courses were very helpful. Many learners successfully complete this phonetics course when taken at the appropriate stage in their professional development.

We strongly encourage future students to carefully review the course description, module content, and prerequisites before enrolling, and to contact our team if unsure which course best suits their experience level. We are always happy to guide learners toward the most appropriate option.

We wish you every success in your teaching career and appreciate your honest feedback.

A Refreshing and Rewarding Experience with Global English TESOL

As someone with over two decades of teaching experience and a Master’s degree in Education, I enrolled in the Global English TESOL course not because I was new to the field, but because I wanted to refresh and deepen my knowledge. I can truly say it exceeded my expectations.

The content was clear, engaging, and full of practical insights that I was able to integrate directly into my university-level teaching in Japan. I found myself learning something new in every module—whether related to methodology, assessment, or inclusive education. I particularly appreciated how up-to-date and relevant the course materials were, especially in light of current global shifts in education.

What made the biggest difference for me, though, was the outstanding support I received throughout. The tutors and staff are genuinely excellent—knowledgeable, responsive, and encouraging at every step. Their feedback was thoughtful and personal, making the entire experience not only educational but also empowering.

Even though I already hold advanced qualifications, receiving the highest-level TESOL certificate from Global English has been a meaningful achievement. It re-energized my professional outlook and has opened up new opportunities for international collaboration.

I strongly recommend Global English to anyone—whether you're starting out, returning to teaching, or simply looking to grow. This program offers real value, practical tools, and a wonderful community of support. I'm truly grateful for the experience.

Global and Transgenerational!

In my autumn years, I sought a meaningful and fulfilling career change, and Global English proved to be an ideal fit. Their 120-hour TESOL program was exactly what I needed - user-friendly, beautifully structured, concise and packed with valuable information - preparing me for both online and classroom teaching.
Each page introduced new facets of teaching, guiding me into the world of education with minimal hiccups. My tutor, Kerry, was amazing - insightful, patient and always available, which made a huge difference to this baby boomer!
And don't think that this program is just for seniors; my son completed the exact same program and thought it was absolutely brilliant. Go for it!
