Folger's Red Coffee Containers

This is not about Folger's coffee, but its packaging. I have severe arthritis in my hands and I appreciate the containers Folgers come in. The lids are easy for me to open and the container has a large place to grip it and large opening for easy access. It sure beats the old tin cans! So kudos to Folgers for something probably no one comments on.

Folgers Black Silk and Gourmet Supreme ground coffee

This is a review on two Folgers brand coffees, Black Silk and Gourmet Supreme. To be honest I really didn't want to waste space with two different reviews. I do not consider myself cheap I will call myself value conscious especially when it comes to coffee. I have found that there are many excellent coffees in the 35 to 50 cents per ounce. My personal preference is a single origin medium roast whole bean from any of the Latin American countries with Colombian or Guatemalan my favorites. There are also some light roast blends I have become fond of.
Early on in my coffee drinking career Folgers 100% Colombian was my go to supermarket coffee but something along the line went seriously wrong. I do not like acidity or bitterness, I now enjoy a full flavored brew...smooth roasted coffee flavor with a good mouth feel (not watery) and a good not bitter finish. So i thought I would give Folgers another try, and I did not once but twice. I purchased a 22.6 ounce container of Black Silk and Gourmet Supreme both for $9.96 each at Walmart. The Black Silk was just disgusting, both acidic and bitter with a burnt wood smell and taste. It only took one pot before discarding. Which brings me to the Gourmet Supreme. This "blend" is puzzling, it was low in acid but was bitter and had basically no coffee taste. It took several pots of adjusting the grounds to water ratio to finally come to the conclusion that there was no help for this product either. The more I adjusted the ground amount the more bitter it became and still never had any coffee flavor. It went in the trash also. Both coffees also had a strange chemical taste. I don't know where Folgers is sourcing their beans but it is obvious to this amateur that they are using bargain basement garbage. And for the price they are charging, you could be doing a lot better. For the same price (about 44cents/ounce) I am able to purchase a very good quality single origin 100% either Colombian or Guatemalan whole bean roasted medium that will give you everything you could ask for low acidity, not bitter, full bodied, smooth finish that would have an SCA cupping score in the mid 80's to the low 90's. I wanted to give Folgers another chance but this is why I stopped buying it in the first place. Following the SCA guidelines for quality and cupping I would give the Black Silk a score of 66 and the Gourmet Supreme a score of 69.75. These coffees are horrid and I can not recommend them to anyone
