Great progress from working together

FamilySearch has a shared Family Tree with over a billion people in it. Many of the reviews are from people expecting to have their own, private tree, and are annoyed when someone messes up their data. The shared tree's goal is to identify as many people as possible who have lived, and how they are related. On almost every other site, you spend most of your time either re-discovering what others have already found, or copying from their trees. This feels cleaner, because you have one, consistent view of your data (whether or not it is actually right). But if you look at all the conclusions in all the trees at other sites, there is at least as much total error, plus massive duplication.

For me, the great thing about FamilySearch is that I can "pick up where others left off," and I can get new work done "once and for all", so that everyone benefits from my work.

I do believe there is room for improvement on how easy it is to correct the mistakes of others. And there should be more guidance to prevent users from making mistakes in the tree in the first place. But I love that I don't have to start from scratch in this combined tree.

Awful site

Awful site, the search engine is useless, ask specific questions but give you everything except what you ask for. Waste of time

Please do NOT use this site

Please do NOT use this site. I went on here to search my grandmother who passed away in 2024 and they have my name misspelled, me listed as a man (I am a woman and have always been one by the way), and also have it listed that my husband is my grandmother's grandson. How in the world are people allowed to edit data about someone's family that isn't accurately verified? My advice, stay away from this site and try to find information from close family members who can set you on the right path.

Very poor idea

Very poor idea. the fact that you put your family tree on there, thinking it is YOUR OWN family tree,
then find out that anyone even remotely connected adds facts and people to it, with incorrect information quite often!
I got quite frustrated at having to alter facts and even delete wrongly-added people. having to check and re-check that no-one has tampered with my carefully researched tree.
I have stopped adding to it and have my own tree on the Reunion app. At least I know it's correct.

Hopeless mess of errors

I have researched my family tree carefully, using only information I could verify the source for. I joined familysearch just out of interest, and to see if I had missed any connections. I have found it to be riddled with errors and incorrect information added with no source. Children I know died in infancy have spouses, random children are added born to women in their late 50s, people are linked to 2 sets of parents... at least in my family line it is a hopeless mess.

FamilySearch Helped Me Find Ancestors

FamilySearch is free! It is very hard to find a quality service that you don't have to pay a lot of money for. I have been very pleased and impressed with the genealogical research tools that FamilySearch provides. I have been able to find deceased family members because of records. I've been able to add memories to my family members. I highly recommend using FamilySearch as a great tool to document your family history.

I downloaded this app to find out my DNA roots, as suggested in a video. After completing the registration and analysis process, the app asks me to pay to access the results. This is just a way to make money and does not provide anything free as promised. I definitely do not recommend it!

Lineage to Royalty, Adam & Eve and God ID: P3VG-GDH

Many lineage paths went to Royalty all over Europe and beyond. One path took me to Adam and Eve and God. Adam ben Elohim 4004BC-3074BC ID: KG97-59V , Eve bat Elohim 4004BC-3311BC ID: LR35-F8Z. Longevity runs in my family as Adam lived to 930 years old. Eve only made to 693. On this site, God is listed as Deceased, ID: P3VG-GDH. I arrived there from my name, but then the computer could not remember how I got there. Seems a family member also buried Jesus. Joseph of Arrimathea 0041BC-0045 ID: LVSL-8YF. omg?!

I have had an account with Family…

I have had an account with Family Search for over 15 years, through this time I have had to contact them to find out how to change what has been changed. Then go and re-enter all information. This time I decided to try to connect with the people who kept changing it. I was written up for it. I was trying to communicate! So in the email I got I asked them how to erase or delete my part of the tree. What happened? They were so good before all of this! All I want is my information off. We will see what happens. I would hate to get a lawyer involved. But who knows.

Awful Nonsenical Fantasies

Awful, I am a professional genealogist and have used FamilySearch as a side tool for around 7 years, It is a hotbed of fantasists and you will always be outnumbered by the ignorant, if you try and reach out and explain why any such person is incorrect you will be banned, presumedly because many of them are Mormons albeit clearly dumb and fantastical ones desperately trying to grasp at any hint of the old world.

The trouble is that I added my family back to the 11th century, 7 years of research, and they have locked and are now baptising my family back to the Domesday Book. There are nonsense branches made by delusional Americans that never existed but they still baptise them, non existent people.

This is not a place for anybody investigating the truth, if you enjoy copying and pasting off Geni or WikiTree 10 hours a day this is the perfect place, make yourself at home. If LDS is your cult I would find another, they baptise anybody even people that never existed.

In 20 years when P David Gardner and Kirk Goddard Larsson are gone it may be a better place, but until people like this are gone this place will always be a mess, both almost certainly LDS people.

They copy and paste errors for several hours a day without any independent research, they literally just spend hours a day copying and pasting the errors of others. It is impossible to work here in such circumstances. They probably sleep well at night thinking they have done the world a favour but everyday they make it more of a mess for any layman looking to find their true heritage. There is no beating ignorance, insanity will come long before any success.

Terrible platform

Not user friendly, contains false information they refuse to fix, harasses you if you don't subscribe to their beliefs, and deletes true information if it's not what they want there. Total scam probably just so they can try to get your family into their cult.

Targeted for being a PAGAN/WICCAN

Targeted for being a PAGAN/WICCAN
Family Search allowed a user to deliberately sabotage and target my family tree and delete images and documents and harass my emails after asking them to stop they continued to deliberately target my family. I spent 15 years gathering information and contributed a lot of files to family search along with Scotlands people over the years to give people the information they needed. This is a spiritual attack from a christian stalker who thinks it’s acceptable to do as they please and ruin entries on family search by keep deleting files and the truth. This doesn’t just effect me this effects thousands of others who are linked. Shame on you familysearch for allowing these attacks on your site to continue.

I have worked in FS for 5 years and…

I have worked in FS for 5 years and LOVED it- Now that they have combined all data from everyone's trees, my work is absolutely worthless- This has been HEARTBREAKING. I read somewhere that "everyone makes mistakes , and to "politely explain to the other person their error." this would be nice if it was a single new mistake.. But now I have 20 other people's info, full of errors- some have posted names of LIVING persons... attached totally incorrect sources with comparing dates, geography etc, It is NOT one person- It is 10s of people being sloppy in their work.. and I am not, have not been a perfectionist BECAUSE it was MY tree and I can continue to add sources when I find them, and fix my own mistake.. Once again, I am HEARTBROKEN

Great service.

You'll get a great service for free.
Of course there can be mistakes because everyone can contribute information, but you have to be thorough in your genealogy research. It is a great advantage that it is free. That way you are assured that you can always access your own information.

Used to LOVE this site

Used to LOVE this site. A lot of great info. Somehow, all of my ancestors are being corrupted. "This person was merged." Go to the merge page. NO INFO!!! No parents, no spouse, no children, no records - THE PAGE IS BLANK!!!!! More and more of my ancestors, ones I have verifiable records for, some of those records I got on FamilySearch, now all being DELETED from the site.

One man got unlinked from his father. Records linking his father were erased. Father still on the site, but all records pertaining to his son have been deleted. Multiple records from ancestry.com show his parents match, all of the siblings match, their records show he was sibling, town matches... SAME PEOPLE, but for some reason Familysearch deleted that relationship and ALL records showing it.

Ancestry cites records. wikitree cites records, FamilySearch did as well but they deleted them all. (I am talking specifically about the people whose records were deleted on FamilySearch)

I have that relationship, including DOCUMENTATION, in my family tree, but others looking for his ancestors will be denied that information because FamilySearch deleted it.

So much for a collaborative effort. Only takes ONE person a few minutes to DESTROY what others have been working on for YEARS.

Awful

Awful. Basically a scam so they can baptize your deceased relatives by proxy irregardless of whether they were even Christian. If you add anything they won’t let you delete. Deplorable, unethical and frankly unchristian behavior. Beware.
