Peru - June 2024

My husband and I have had several trips with Yvette over the last few years which have all been amazing.

The trip to Peru certainly did not disappoint. The itinerary was diverse from the amazing Machu Picchu to being in a canoe in the Amazon looking for wildlife to exploring the city of Lima. The attention to detail of the itinerary and the organisation was second to none.

The trip itself was also very much a rollercoaster in respect of sickness in the group which included a hospital visit and calling for Doctors several times. However, as always with any of Yvette's trips, you felt completely confident and assured that, no matter what, you would be taken care of.

We have a trip booked for next year with Yvette and will continually work through the list of amazing adventures she offers.

Wonderful time in Peru and lovely catching up with previous holiday buddies as well as making some new friends!

Blown away by Peru

Blown away by Peru
Peru is not an easy country to visit, as there are early mornings and extended journeys, but the effort is repaid in full. Our tour was admirably led by Yvette, the director of Experium, who kept us going while some were struggling with illness. A combination of digestive problems and altitude sickness made it difficult for some to fully participate, but we kept going.
The tour was designed to show off the best of the country and we certainly saw that. Photos of Macchu Pichu do not do the site justice.
The group contained a mixture of first-timers and returnees to Experium and the spirit of companionship grew during the tour.
Looking forward to my next adventure.

Peru June 2024

Peru June 2024
My husband and I have just returned from our first ever escorted trip and our first with Experium Travel
We are globetrotters who holiday frequently and decided on this trip following a recommendation from a friend and the fact that the Director of the Company Yvette escorts the tours herself
Peru was an amazing Country and we have come back with some wonderful imprints of the locations in our hearts especially Machu Picchu
Some pointers to bear in mind for future travellers – most people on the trip were solo travellers who have travelled before with this Company - which was not a problem for us but may be something to consider for couples going forward
The hotels met our expectations for this trip and with the exception of a couple were as advertised – mid range

The days were quite taxing – too many early starts with not much respite in between – would have been better to perhaps stagger the days if possible as we did see a number of people struggling with this including ourselves
Also the majority of travellers on this trip became ill – many with stomach upsets and we were told by the Director Yvette under no circumstances should we take Imodium however when doctors were called they prescribed exactly this type of medication – having researched the Country following our trip it appears that this is a common issue in Peru – The Director Yvette did however do a good job in ensuring swift medical treatment for those in need
The Guides that were appointed for this trip were a mixed bunch – some were excellent and some were not – in particular the Guide for Machu Picchu was terrible – one of the guests was verbally abused and pushed at the top of Machu Picchu at a photo point – we informed the guide who did nothing so my husband had to intervene as this could have been escalated and become dangerous!
Also the guide extended the route by an extra 40 minutes on his own remit which caused me particular mobility problems and ruined the end of the day which was a real shame
Tips for tour guides and drivers were not included in the trip costs which we were aware of – we totally understand that tipping is optional and clearly for a good service one would tip gladly however Yvette the Director really laboured the point after every day regarding ‘thanking by showing our appreciation’ and we were made to feel pressured to tip to the point at one of the days she actually stood there and watched who tipped and who didn’t which was in our opinion not right – if its that important to Experium Travel they should include tipping in their costs
Finally we did notice at times that some group members were spoken to in a rather condescending dismissive manner which we found rather embarrassing and unprofessional

Overall these comments are meant to be constructive and we met some great people who we will for sure keep in touch with

Thank you for your frank and honest review.
As you clearly state for 2024 gratuities for drivers and guides have not been included but going forward from 2025 onwards ALL gratuities will be included sms hopefully this will remove any awkwardness. I can only apologise if I made you feel awkward in any way.

To explain about Machu Picchu
Re Machu Picchu guide - unfortunately MP now has a lot of restrictions - one of which is that each group can only be a max of 10 people in each group.
As we were a group of 16 (+me) - we had to split in to two groups. Never ideal but there was no choice,
Both groups’ did in fact do the same route (no 2) but one of the groups did a short cut with special permission. This was requested as several jn the group were seriously struggling.
Obviously, I wasn’t with your group so I can’t really comment on what exactly happened nor on the guide’s response. However, I can only add that he did follow the correct route and under the current guidelines set out by MP - guides are not allowed to deviate from the selected route.
The itinerary - was set out in the same format as 2 yrs previously - when people had not suffered so much with the altitude and various stomach upsets and other ailments - but I take on board your comments and perhaps a ‘slightly’ more leisurely approach will be taken on future trips.

Imodium - I am not a medical practitioner and don’t profess to be - I simply recommend that people don’t revert too quickly to Imodium as most doctors don’t recommend this. In fact, to my knowledge, when doctors were called they weren’t prescribing Imodium, Most of the time, they have injections to help them with altitude sickness together with oxygen - medication to settle their stomachs and / or antibiotics.
This was certainly a trip for medical call outs as you say - with various ailments - and not all at once!

Solo travellers - indeed - as a solo friendly company we encourage solo travellers with low or no single supplements and as you say, we also have quite a number of couples travelling as well. I like to think that all are welcome.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review and I welcome all feedback,

Colours of Peru 2024

I have just returned from a fabulous holiday to Peru. The sights and scenery were stunning, from seeing condors to the islands of Lake Titicaca, from Cusco to the wonderful Sacred Valley and of course Macchu Picchu and the Amazon rainforest. Yvette is a wonderful tour manager, putting together a holiday with so much variety and giving us an insight into local lifestyles and customs. She always provides excellent local guides and having already been on 6 holidays with Yvette, and 2 more booked, I cannot recommend Experium highly enough.

Due to the bad experience during Peru…

Due to the bad experience during Peru and Namibia Tours, I have cancelled the upcoming tours for Jordan and Morocco. Mainly due to the incidents that occurred during Peru. Yvette the Tour Guide does not keep a boundary between professionalism and personal life. She constantly talks down about most of her clients who are repeating ones. During the tour Yvette created a divide in the group between Robin (one of her old friends) and the rest of the group by talking low of her and creating a bad image for her within the group.
If people want to do their own thing during the evenings then they made to feely guilty for not attending and it becomes a common joke within the group, it feels like being at a school playground rather than on holiday
Yvette (Tour Guide) also made degoratory comments about local villagers in Peru, one being 'Beggars cannot be Choosers' during the picnic day that we had, which I felt was not acceptable and she was looking down at the locals.
Yvette was also rude to other tourists during the boat ride on Amazon, she was only requested to put on her life jacket but she went off on one. Only creating a bad image for herself.
Yvette is generally rude to her clients, there was an incident at Amazon were she lashed out at me in front of everyone when we were at Amazon. Even though she apologised later on, it was not acceptable behaviour, as I have paid for a service and expect answers and not to be spoken to rudely.
Yvette demands alot from the locals guides especially when we were at the amazon she requested to leave before the other members of the group arrived (who were not part of our group, but they had paid to be on the same tour with us. She should have requested a private tour for our group if she wanted special treatment instead off lashing out at the guide who was right in what he was saying, that he had to wait for the others to arrive before he could leave,
We were also not given a choice to what activities we wanted to do at the Amazon and Yvette decided to pick according to what she liked.
She made executive decisions switching the iterniary around without informing other members of the group, due to this I had to miss out on one of the activities, which I was looking forward to, as she changed the plans without informing me.
There was also an incident at Machu Pichu when Robin (another member of the group) was pushed by another Tourist and nothing was done by the guide, which I felt was not on and putting our lives at risk as it was not managed properly.
I felt most of the guides at Peru were not up to it and did not do a great job as she always boast about having the best guides.
I was not too impressed by Namibia either as 80% (6 hours ) of the time was spent on the coach travelling between lodges and only one full day of gaming. She should have been more clear about the % that is spent on the road, if I had known I would not have come.
There are other people that have been unhappy in how she speaks to them but they never voiced their concerns.
I also felt that she talked people out from doing activities just because she did not want to do it. Especially with the Night Walk a few people wanted to do this but she was being really negative about it. In Namibia a lady wanted to climb the Dunes to which Yvette was orginally going to accompany her but changed her mind last minute.
She also put me off from doing the aircraft in Namibia saying I was not guaranteed a window seat, which is not the case after asking around, so I missed out on the experince
Yvette made fun of me and another tourist in Namibia when we were encountered with a snake due to our phobia of snakes we were quite traumatized with the incident and she repeatingly mentioned it again in Peru and the Amazon amongst other members making a joke out of it. Only those that have phobia of snakes will understand. I found it really childish.
Overall I have found Yvette extremly rude and have cancelled the future tours with her

Responses to the comment below:
Can you explain what you mean by ‘Islamic Slant’, which I find very offensive. After your behaviour during Peru I decided to cancel Jordon and Morrocco.
Do realise you are defaming my character by stating I have fabricated lies. Certainly, was not misinterpreted you clearly used the phrase ‘Beggars cannot be Choosers’ in relation to the local villagers in Peru. Sally and Mags were present at the time.
Amazon activities, your response backs my point, you decided to pick what was appropriate and we had no choice. We paid £1000 for the 2 days, would you not think it was appropriate to ask what we wanted to do instead of just giving us 2 options from the several. You need to work on your attitude and treat your clients with respect as we have paid for a service, we are not on a school trip. I have spent thousands,do you really think I am bothered about a couple of hundreds deposit, shame on you

Dear Shareen. Thank you for your feedback from the recent tour to Peru. Whilst I always welcome feedback from my clients I do feel that your comments need explaining.
Firstly, you cancelled the Jordan tour because you have made other arrangements for a "private tour with friends" as you want a more Islamic slant on the tour. This you already told me when you were in Namibia.
Again, the Morocco tour, was a tour you had said you would probably cancel whilst we were in Namibia due to work commitments.
Yesterday evening, You asked for your deposits to be refunded and after I explained that deposits were non refundable - you have chosen instead to leave this negative review which I believe contains untrue and unfair comments.
To take your various comments one by one - the comment that you allege I made making derogatory comments about locals - is completely fabricated by yourself. I have never insulted local people and never would. In fact, I support many locals and local communities where I take groups. I think you misheard or misinterpreted something I said.
On tour - People are free to eat in any restaurant of their choice and I make a point of explaining this. I simply offer people a chance to eat together if they wish BUT there is never any 'pressure' to join the group if people want to go off and do other things. I simply suggest a time to meet for people if they wish to go out together. After all, I have many solo travellers who travel with me.

Namibia - yes the journeys are long and this is explained in full detail when I send out the details of the tour. If you had concerns about the length of the bus journey, you simply had to ask. I have been very honest with all of the information I give.

Your comments regarding Robin - I don't quite know where you get this from - but as you say - Robin is one of my oldest friends who was on this trip and in no way did I create a divide between Robin and the rest of the group. Robin chose to dine in other restaurants as the restaurants are one of the ways she enjoys to travel. This is something that she had in common with one of the other travellers who she had met on a previous tour of mine in Japan.

The Amazon activities - were chosen for the group and were selected to give the very best experience for the group. Due to heavy rain on the morning of the boat lake tour, departing at 6 am - you chose not to partake in the tour. There is no pressure to join in any activity. The lodge, who organise the activities, switched the tour to the canopy tour at 6am due to heavy rain. I did not wake you up to do the tour as you had expressed no interest in a tour that morning. The rooms did not have telephones and there was no wifi at the lodge at all making it more difficult to contact the group. That afternoon, we switched the tour to the lake - again - organised by the lodge - not Experium Travel - and when you said you had wanted to do the canopy walk - I offered you that as an alternative to the boat tour which you had not wanted to do.
You then decided you wanted to do the boat and not the canopy tour - but I clearly gave you the choice.

The Night walk - again organised by the lodge - and not Experium Travel - was not on offer that day - but this was because the guide could not do the night walk as we got back so late after the lake tour. The Night Walk - he said was done on the way back from the lake as it was already dark - but as I knew two people specifically wanted to do the night walk - again I offered them the alternative. To go with the guide. They said they didn't want to after all.
I could go on ... but rest assured I always put the clients interest above my own. I am not infallable. Sometimes I get it wrong.

These seem to be your views and not those shared by other members of the Peru trip.
It seems that you are perhaps looking for another type of tour and when your deposit was not forthcoming you chose to write this review which is a pity.

I have just returned Peru and the Amazon.I am not sure I have the words to explain what a fabulous time we have had.
I went with Experium Travel led by Yvette the owner of Experium.
Yvette is amazing,no detail too small to be left out,she plans everything, guides, hotels ,buses trains planes restaurants ,the best time to visit. Organisation at its best.
This was the seventh time I have travelled with Yvette, she looks out for everyone. A true expert in her field. I have more trips to do with Yvette which I look forward too very much.
Not always the same people but usually someone you recognise from previous trips.

Amazing trip to Namibia

I first met Yvette in 2016 when she was the tour manager on a single trip to Antarctica and I was very impressed by her attitude and organisational skills.
When I found out that she set up her own tour company, I was very eager to go onto one of her trips but they sell out almost as soon as they are announced.
We were lucky enough to get a cancellation to a recent trip to Namibia, and what a trip it was!
Thanks to Yvette and local guide Gerson we saw far more of the country than some of our friends who travelled with other companies.
And we very much hope to travel with Experium Travel in the future.

A chance encounter with Yvette Barnett…

A chance encounter with Yvette Barnett in April 2019 has led to some fabulous adventures. Apart from some travels with family and friends, most of my holidays since 2008 had, until 2019, been as a solo traveller in Europe.
When we met, after a long career working all over the world for other travel companies, Yvette had recently set up Experium Travel, determined to provide the very best experiences for her own clients. I asked her to send me details of a holiday in Nepal that she had arranged for November 2019. That was my first Experium holiday, the first of five with two more booked. My Experium holidays have been to Nepal, Canada (Hudson Bay, polar bears and beluga whales), Morocco, Costa Rica, India (Delhi, tiger reserves and Agra) from which I have recently returned, with trips to Jordan and Sri Lanka to come.
I declared the Nepal trip the best holiday I had had – and I have travelled fairly extensively, both as a family when my children were small and then as a couple. However, on my return from each Experium holiday, my immediate reaction has been the same – the best holiday. They have all been wonderful, but in very different ways.
I am not sure if Yvette would claim to have a winning formula, but true of all my Experium holidays are the following: meticulous planning with attention to detail; small groups so that every client knows they are valued and supported; an extensive network of seemingly the very best agents in the countries visited so that if emergency help is needed (very rare) it can be provided speedily. Then come the more interesting, client facing parts: the best destinations at the best times of year for those countries; wonderful hotels, lodges etc., some of them 5 star quality, others more simple but equally wonderful and staffed by the friendliest, most helpful staff; out of the ordinary itineraries arranged as a result of Yvette’s extensive knowledge and that of her loyal, local agents who have known her for years.
Finally, it’s also the people who join Experium holidays who add so much to the overall experience. Yvette’s ‘formula’ appeals to a wide range of clients from many different backgrounds, and the fellow travellers, particularly when one is a solo traveller like me, add enormously to the fun. You can opt out and sit alone, dine alone, etc. if you want to, but people don’t because we all have so much excitement to share, either at breakfast in anticipation of the day ahead, or at dinner at the end of a great day.
Are there any downsides? No, I don’t believe so, unless you think that the popularity of these holidays is a disadvantage! You have to make decisions very speedily because Experium holidays sell out very quickly.
And finally, I very rarely write reviews, which isn’t entirely fair because I read reviews and I am sometimes influenced by what I read. Experium Travel deserves more than 5 stars, but that is the maximum I can give, so the least I can do is to write a review to add to the many endorsements already given to Experium.

5 star experience with excellent value for money

I cannot recommend this company enough for people wanting to visit parts of the world which are tricky to navigate!! Especially those wishing for a truly wonderful wildlife or cultural experience that is too remote for the majority of us to achieve on our own. Yvette runs the most wonderful trips and it is entirely organised to minimise stress and maximise the enjoyment of the traveller on every level. Perfect level of luxury combined with the most memorable of life experiences. We travelled as mother and daughter to India to see the bengal tigers (in particular) and I would not hesitate to recommend this trip to everyone!

I have recently returned after a fabulous guided tour of Japan. Tour manager could not have been better organised and helpful to all of our group. Tour guides also excellent. The tour began in Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Hiroshima and finally to Osaka. Cherry blossom stunning the further south we went.
My highlight was Hakone stay in fabulous hotel on banks of Lake, where I experienced an open air spa Japanese style. Trip to see Mt.Fuji , cable car and boat trip . Well worth the effort getting there. Bullet trains included. Would I do it again. Yes.

Chile March 2024

Having recently lost my long time partner I wanted to take the trip to Chile that we had always planned to take together. I was recommended to Experium and Yvette. I have to say that I had the most wonderful time and the renewed confidence this solo experience has given me, and the friends that I’ve met, has made me look forward with enthusiasm to the new experiences I have in front of me.

Another wonderful holiday thanks to Experium Travel. The Wilderness Hotel in Inari was a magical destination, a true winter wonderland. As always Yvette ensured our every need was catered for, with clear guidance provided for all our activities. Great fun on the snowmobiles, lots of laughs as we relived our dog sledding experiences and the delights of our visit to the reindeer farm. A very friendly group of travelling companions added to the pleasure of this wonderful experience. Holidaying with Experium Travel always sees me heading home with magical memories.

Experiences of Oman

My husband & I have just returned from a fabulous holiday in Oman! It was our 8th holiday with EXPERIUM, again organised & lead by the excellent Yvette Barnett! We visited the mountains, desert & coast of Oman. The trip was extremely varied & really explored all aspects of the country. The local guides were very well informed, very approachable & very interesting. We sailed on a dhow, absorbed ourselves in the culture of the country, swam in sinkholes & natural spring water pools, visited a turtle reserve, rode in 4WDs over orange coloured sand dunes, saw sunsets & sunrises & visited souks, to name but a few!! We met old friends & made new ones!
We now look forward to next 3 trips we have booked with EXPERIUM travel!

Oman 2024 From my initial enquiry to our farewell…

From my initial enquiry to our farewell at the airport, Yvette (founder of Experium Travel and a one-woman wonder), was on hand, with her warm personality and vast travel experience, to create the kind of holiday one never forgets. She truly is Experium Travel, managing everything personally, from enquiries through to leading every holiday herself. Coast, mountains, desert, dhows and dolphins, camels and quad bikes, mosques and more fine food than we could eat, this was a true insight into Islamic culture. My first holiday with Experium but certainly not my last. Yvette offers such a wide variety of destinations throughout the year that there is bound to be something unmissable on the agenda. But don’t hesitate! A measure of Experium’s excellence is that places sell out fast!

Egypt highlights with experts in every aspect

We have just returned from 9 days in Egypt with Yvette Barnett, Director of Experium Travel. This was one of those ‘Once in a Lifetime’ trips which was only made possible due to Yvette’s ability to plan, organise and deliver the most wonderful set of experiences. From pre-holiday communications, smooth travel arrangements, wonderful hotels, cultural highlights visited with the expert and experienced local guide who was with us for the whole trip, nothing was left to chance. A small group of only 10 meant we all became friends and no one was ever left out. The highlight for me personally was the 4 nights on the dahabeya sailing south on the Nile from Luxor to Aswan. After a memorable swim in the Nile, Yvette even managed to conjure up a birthday party for me complete with bbq ashore and a birthday cake drummed in by the best crew ever. I can wholeheartedly recommend anyone travelling with Experium Travel. No matter what happens during a trip Yvette will find a solution to any issue and do so effectively and quickly. Thank you Yvette.

A holiday of a lifetime

A holiday of a lifetime and an experience that will always stay with me.
We were immersed in cultural experiences and visited visual jewels. From UNESCO sites- the worlds biggest Hindu and Buddhist temples, to 1969 VW open top jeeps driven through rice paddies in the jungle, to a village experience of planting rice and cooking local food.
In two weeks in Indonesia, it felt like two months worth of experiences.
We visited 6 islands with a local guide at each place. This gave us real insight into everything we did and saw.
Experium really delivered in terms of experiencing a place. I’ll never forget this trip.
