Another day i den gamle by.
Yesterday evening, myself and my family from Randers
(Including my Daughter who travelled from Copenhagen) attended a special event at den gamle by in Aarhus.
After previously visiting on many occasions, we were all looking forward to the magical Chritmas event in anticipation.
To start off with, the queing system to get in, worked very well. Once 18.00 came around we were literally inside within 10 minutes.
Now comes the negative...
I must say, that after all our previous experiences, the "Jul i Den gamle by" certainly did NOT live up to our expectations. Apart from a nearly undecorated Christmas tree, and buying Glogg & Æbleskiver, there was literally NOTHING , that gave us the Christmassy"Hygge" - NOTHING.
On previous visits, there were many houses including their residents, an authenticly dressed lady, explaining how to "juleklip" or telling stories about Christmas gone by. No athenticity whatsoever.
Disappointingly, over half the houses were closed, especially many that my wife was looking forward to seeing.
To be honest, their programme for the evening was extremely weak indeed, and none of us were left with the Excitement of Christmas as it used to be.
Maybe a few people singing Christmas carols, some Christmas music here and there, or some small Children or "nisse" running around. Not for me to decide, IT WAS JUST VERY DISAPPOINTING.
This experience that affected us all has tarnished our love for Den Gamle By, and left us feeling cheated.
I'm sure that other visitors felt the same as us, as there just wasn't any atmosphere, that made the evening feel special.
Den gamle by - must do better.

Thank you for your evaluation of Den Gamle Bys Aftenjul. I´ll reply here as well as to your mail.
I am sorry that the event left you disappointed.
I am sure that it is correct that some others were also disappointed, but based on comments to the staff present and reviews on Google, I will state that a lot of our visitors also had a very good – some even said extraordinary – experience.
I don’t quite understand that you did not meet people dressed in period costume, because there were a lot – although, as it must be, ‘hidden’ around in the dark streets. Most of the museum’s Christmas decorated period rooms were open to visitors. That counts for all the Christmas decorated historical shops as well. And we had added some extra features such as a guided tour in the dark by the ‘night watchman’, and an immersive and poetic storytelling about the candle light combined with the story of the gnomes. And for the first time this year you could visit the jazz pub Bent J.
However, I must conclude that our information about what we offered was not good enough. I hope you will give it another try, if we repeat this kind of event another time.
