Avoid Countrywide – A Costly and Frustrating Experience
Sharing this in good faith so others can avoid wasting their time, money, and potentially risking their property deal.
Unfortunately, I can't give less than one star. In one sentence: STAY AWAY FROM COUNTRYWIDE.
We had a surveyor, C. Randall, sent out by Countrywide, and the experience was unprofessional from the very beginning. Despite being told we'd receive a call 90 mins prior with an estimated arrival time, no such call came—he simply turned up unannounced, without formal ID. Once inside, he quickly glanced at a few rooms (not even all of them) and completed the entire survey in under five (5) minutes. There was no meaningful engagement or effort to understand the significant renovation work that had been done on the property.
The final valuation for our three-bedroom property came back £30,000 below expectations—shockingly, even lower than what the property was originally purchased for six years ago. It was almost laughable. Since then, we've had two independent valuations carried out, both in line with the original asking price and £30,000–£35,000 higher than what Countrywide reported.
When I tried to raise a formal complaint, I was told the valuation could not be appealed—the surveyor's decision was final, with no regard for the glaring discrepancy. This forced us to find a new lender, pay for another valuation, and caused delays and unnecessary stress for everyone involved. The deal nearly collapsed because of this unjustified undervaluation.
I would not recommend Countrywide to anyone. The entire process felt rushed, dismissive, and unprofessional. It’s clear some of their surveyors do not listen to, or even acknowledge, the homeowners—let alone respect the work that’s gone into the property.
If you have any say in which surveyor or company to use, do not choose Countrywide. The experience was nothing short of a joke.
