No Reservations

It was Valentine's Day and every restaurant in Manchester City Centre appeared to be packed to the gills. At every one we tried we found ourselves being asked if we'd booked. Well no, we hadn't. Sorry, no service. We were just deliberating a return to the excellent Koreana (and the possibility that there might not be a table for us there) when we came across Cafe Istanbul.

Our hearts sank when we overheard the manager tell a couple that they might have to wait for an hour. I could sit and sip wine for half an hour but I'd rather not wait longer than that.

"Just ask the manager, Angel," said a friendly waitress.

We did; the manager consulted her book and found a free table for us straight away. At once our spirits were restored. We had the meze to start, followed by the mixed chargrill washed down with a bottle of rich, fruity Chilean red.

Starter: The filo-wrapped feta was suitably crispy and melted in my mouth. The Halloumi was crisp and not too chewy. The hummous and taramasalata were in sufficient quantity for the bread provided and the other little dishes were lovely.

Main: The meat platter was varied and delicious; too much for me in the end, I had to ask for a doggy bag. There was no way I was leaving that delicious stuff there. The meat itself was grilled to thrill, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Just how I like it. Our waitress kept restocking the small pot of sauce when I'd used it up, bless her. This was served with a plate each of fresh steamed veg and fluffy steamed rice that my husband waxed lyrical about. Personally, I'm all about the meat but yes, the rice was nice, and the food was elegantly served.

I'd review the dessert if we'd had it but alas I was too full to even contemplate it. I've been telling our friends about this place and look forward to bringing them there.
