Great experience adopting a very sweet kitten at the Blue Cross

The process was fast, simple and easy, but still highly professional. It was clear that everyone there really cared for the animals and wanted to make sure that they were going to good homes. The cat that I adopted was clearly well looked after when I first met her and and the staff wanted to make sure that she would continue to be well looked after being re-homed with me. Upon contacting them to inform them how my little cat was doing they were all very happy to hear that she'd settled in well and was quite contented. Overall, I'm very happy with the service they provided during the pet adoption process.

A dog with rotten teeth and denied any help

We brought our wonderful little George (the miniature poodle who is 9 in November) home 3 months ago from Southampton. He was advertised as a loving family dog who had been well kept and well trained. According to Blue Cross, he was being rehomed due to a family breakdown, after asking, not much more information was given, we respected this as life happens. We made it extremely clear to Blue Cross what we was looking for and needed from a dog. We expected some anxiety due to the situation.

When we met him, he seemed shy but happy. We spent some time alone with him which went well. We fell in love with him straight away. He clearly took a liking to us he was just a little anxious to what was going on.

A week after meeting George, we brought him home. He warmed so well to us and his new home. He had two new beds, a full toy box and a selection of healthy treats. As time went on, we noticed George not eating as often and struggling to eat his dental sticks, he also appeared to have quite smelly breath. We thought maybe this is just due to his older age. George also had severe reactivity to other dogs on walks and reactivity to the door bell/the door being knocked, pulled on the lead and cannot be left in another room without crying. We have had to start his training from scratch to which his dog reactivity is getting better, however, it’s a long journey.

After he became more comfortable, I was able to start his dental routine, this is when I noticed his awful back teeth. I examined these for some time at home and felt he needed veterinary help. His vet was lovely and George allowed her to have a good look. She confirmed that there is puss, a definite rotten tooth along with 3 potential others. He has severe build up of tar tar and is now booked in for a scale and polish as well as tooth removal.

We reached out to Southampton to talk about this as his vet notes from themselves claim he was in a good healthy “tip top’ condition. They denied any behavioral issues and that he had no dental issues when he was in their care. The severity of George’s teeth would have taken years to have gotten to the state they are in. We have been back and forth since August 26th and have been dismissed and ignored when chasing my emails. This was passed on to the Head of Rehoming and Fostering who also dismissed us and closed the case. I will be continuing to fight this for George as the care he has received during his time with them and after has been rather disgusting for a charity who claim to help and support animals.

Referring to their terms and policies, all dogs are “examined by a veterinary surgeon or veterinary nurse” and the documents we have signed are agreeing that George “is in good health and free from any illness, injury” other than disclosed, which his teeth were not. They also state that “the dog has been subject to a behavior assessment, and to the best of their knowledge is free from any aggressive tendencies, other than disclosed”, George has severe reactivity and to an outsider that doesn’t know him, this comes across as aggressive.

We have been quoted £800 minimum for his procedure, this includes two teeth, there are a potential of two other teeth so of course this price will go up. We hope that George is okay besides this, but will be informed of anything they find in the day.

George had clearly not been checked well and has been rehomed in an awful condition. George also shows signs of possibly being hit in his past. He will not go near either me or my partner when we have big sticks in our hand and cowers always. He is very flinchy and when he had ann anccident in the house, he hid in the corner and was physically scared. After our own research, he was previously a stud dog which we were not informed of. From our idea, he was used for breeding, neutered and rehomed as he no longer served a purpose. We have thoroughly explained our situation to which Blue Cross have said that this is on us and that it is a problem that lies with us, completely going against their terms of a charity. We have also been told many time that “if George is not a good fit for you, we can take him back” rather than supper and help him in his new loving home. Rehoming him again (which is not happening) would not help him but add to his anxiety. I would never rehome a dog again without doing many personal checks. We trusted them as a charity. This is mine and my partners first dog and we have had nothing but issues with George. We love him and feel so sorry for him, he must be in quite some pain.

They are much more of a in out business than a caring charity. I felt a review was appropriate as we have had ZERO help from the charity he came from. If we still get ignored and dismissed, we will be taking this to a small claims court.

The best place to get a hamster from

I had a really positive experience adopting a hamster from Blue Cross Devon. I was impressed by how much time and care the centre staff took in ensuring I had the right knowledge and setup to give her a great forever home.

I also appreciated insight into the individual personalities of each available hamster before I reserved one. The experience was of course vastly superior to buying from a pet shop, and I will always use Blue Cross for adding furry friends in my family from now on.

Fantastic service, animals really looked after and perfect rehoming experience.

Fantastic service, animals really looked after and perfect rehoming experience.

We were looking to re-home kittens and had been planning and looking for some time. The right time came for us and we then found a litter of kittens at Hertfordshire Blue Cross. We originally wanted 2 kittens but a the litter was a set of 3 we decided to take all of them so that they would not be separated. We filled in the online adoption form, and within 24 hours, we had a phone call to see if we were a good match for the kittens. Everything was very professional, and you could tell that the centre really cared about the animals. We were successful, and we soon set up the day to meet the kittens and hopefully take them home.
Communication and information were brilliant. We rehomed the kittens yesterday. The kittens are all in very good health, very happy and have clearly been very well looked after. They are well socialised and litter trained, and this is a sign of the care they had at Blue Cross. The actual rehoming process was seamless. The staff were excellent, friendly and professional. We give them 100% and we could not be happier. We now have 3 kittens, which, within 24 hours of being home, are settled, happy and just loving exploring our house. They have also very quickly got used to our dog, and she has now accepted them as part of our family. Thank you, Blue Cross, and the staff at the Hertfordshire branch.

Rehoming our dog

We have had so much support and information when rehoming our dog Atlas. Phone calls, emails, information packs, they really want you to succeed and care so deeply for the animals. Becca Tyrer has been wonderful as were all the team on adoption day! And the care has continued since we brought him home.

The Bromsgrove team are incredible

The Bromsgrove team are absolutely faultless. My partner and I have accessed their services on two occasions now for very different reasons, and they have been phenomenal both times. They are kind, patient, understanding, flexible, non-judgemental and truly have the animal's best interests at the very heart of what they do. But despite being so busy taking care of these wonderful animals, they still find room to also really genuinely care about owners.

We adopted our rescue from them a few months ago now and we had taken a lot of time to really try and find the right dog for us. We had a lot of limitations and the team took the time to understand our situation and our history, and matched us with a dog they felt was the right fit for us and one attempt was all it took: they found us the most perfect girl we could have possibly imagined. Caz in particular was fostering our girl at the time and she was absolutely amazing every step of the way. She not only gave our girl the best space to recover from a traumatic start, but helped grow her into a dog who has gone from strength to strength since and we couldn't be more grateful to her and the whole team.

If we are ever in a position to adopt another rescue we will only use Blue Cross. They are trustworthy, loving and truly amazing people

I was looking for a companion pony for my horse having lost my 34yo Welsh pony.
As of last week I have 2 ponies that are fitting in well.
The Blue Cross, Burford were excellent to deal with and made the process easy and 2 weeks after my visit(over 100 miles from my home!) the boys were delivered. Very pleased.

I’m deeply disappointed by how some…

I’m deeply disappointed by how some so-called animal welfare organisations operate. A visibly injured stray cat with pus coming from its face couldn’t get help — not because of lack of resources, but because it’s “summer holiday season.”

If you can’t help vulnerable animals during emergencies, then what is the point of your charity status?

This is not animal rescue — it’s a disgrace. Please reconsider your priorities. Animals don’t suffer on a schedule

Blue Cross Catshill are brilliant

Blue Cross Catshill are brilliant! We expressed interest in a 15 year old beautiful cat named Mistie as we felt due to her age she would be overlooked for adoption. The team provided full history and medical information and had quite clearly taken great care of Mistie during her time with them. They do an amazing job, and in the hour that I was there they received a cat and 3 dogs into their care! We are incredibly grateful for Mistie, she has made our house a home again

My experience was with Blue Cross Bromsgrove. The staff there are brilliant. My whole experience from enquiring about a cat through to the adopting process and after care was a thorough, informative and helpful process. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, especially Caroline. My new cat is the best and is happy and settled in her forever home.

Blue Cross rehoming centre is brilliant !! We were so impressed with all the staff, they were all so knowledgeable and helpful. We were matched to Benji, a black Patterdale - a cheeky little chap full of energy. We have had a Patterdale in the past and understand them. We went to the centre in Bromsgrove and the rehoming process was thorough and we felt reassured. Benji is now at home with us and has settled in very well - thank you Blue Cross xx

Educational visit

As part of our Science Week, we invited Varenya into our school to talk to us about dog safety in an assembly, and then to run 3 workshops on how to look after pets. She was absolutely brilliant! She delivered the information knowledgably and confidently, and tailored it well to different ages. The children were so full of questions afterwards, and the sessions have definitely prompted lots more thinking. Thank you for educating and inspiring our amazing children, Varenya!
