My longstanding Barclaycard Avios account was abruptly restricted and I was initially told it had been closed, despite having no missed payments.
I have since been told by Barclaycard’s fraud team that the reason was simply “changed lending criteria,” rather than fraud or misconduct. That generic explanation does not address why a correctly maintained £1,500 facility suddenly became unacceptable after several years.
The handling has been extremely frustrating. I had already completed £8,356 of a £20,000 annual Avios spending target, with around ten months remaining, and had collected more than 92,000 Avios through longstanding use. I also had over 3,000 Avios pending. I have been left seeking answers about the closure notice, reward progress, pending Avios, refunds and credit reporting.
My account-specific agreement distinguishes between restricting further lending and closing the agreement, and normally provides for two months’ written notice. I am still waiting for clear written confirmation of what action was taken, its effective date and the contractual basis.
I have raised a formal complaint and requested a genuine manual review. I hope Barclaycard will provide a clear, evidence-based response rather than another generic explanation.
Update – 18 August 2026: Thank you for responding, Tom. I followed the link provided, but it appears to be Barclaycard’s general contact page rather than a specific route to your team. I have already submitted a detailed formal complaint with supporting evidence through Barclaycard’s official channels and am awaiting a substantive response. If there is a specific secure route through which your team can assist or escalate the existing complaint, please provide it.

I've had a platinum Barclaycard card for years now and never miss not one payment. But in may I was hospitalized for almost 2 weeks because I suffered severe heart failure and I couldn't get to the bank to transfer funds over to pay my bills. When I got out I paid what was owed including the late payment fee and got my account up to date. Now they have lowered my credit limit amount and sending me emails now saying that I'm close to my credit limit and also when I log it's saying I need to make a payment because I may go over my limit. Barclaycard please read this. If you didn't lower my credit amount available to me I wouldn't be close to my credit limit. I am paying off a balance transfer I have with you and I'm not using my card so there's no chance of going over my limit. As I said I've never missed a payment and always paid on time over the last few years since I've been with you. I think it's disgusting the way you've treated me a long time serving honest customer. I informed barclaycard that I heart heart failure and I was in hospital for a time and the customer services was friendly and said sorry to hear what it happened to me. I told them that was going to pay and get my account up to date which I did and they said ok no further action would be taken and not once did anyone mention about about lowering my credit limit. Very disappointed and once my balance transfer has been paid in full and cleared I'll be closing my account.

After being a customer for 20 + years I’ve been treated disgusting. Been told an absolute load of rubbish about my cards , which are now paid off and accounts closed. Would never use them again , always trusted Barclays , but not anymore ever .

Had a letter from debt collectors today. On the letter they put that owe just over 1.300. So I called the debt collectors that I never had a Barclay card and never used one. So they asked the postcode of my property, and apparently it was second of point of contact. The primary contact was totally different and nothing to do with the property I live in and me.So the debt collectors deleted it off there system. So it show how secure barclaycard is.
Had an issue with an online scam and luckily i'd used my barclaycard. They have dealt with it swiftly and efficiently

It’s so automated, with the Bnak not being prepared to understand its customers

So here we are after approval which was quick, the verification was abysmal. Tried over 10 times rang customer service 5 times after being advised to do various things. Visited my local as advised by customer service and they couldnt can docs. Had to go to my nearest branch and they couldnt scan all my docs fir verification of I come, also had the sane error. Now im stuck with a useless credit limit of £200. They just don't want to lend to a pensioner, who iebs their house outright, has quite a good amount of savings, visas. I only wanted a limit of 2k I order to take on holiday and eventually to be my main credit card. My current one has 8k. How on earth are youngsters suppose yo get one. It's ridiculous. Awful service. Never been treated like it

THEY ARE FORCING EVERYBODY TO USE THE APP AND CLOSING DOWN THE BARCLAYCARD WEBSITE. THIS APP IS ABSOLUTE RUBBISH. IT IS MISSING LOTS OF BASIC FEATURES. FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU MAKE MORE THAN ONE PAYMENT OR HAVE ANY STORE REFUNDS DURING A CYCLE THAT GO TOWARDS CLEARING YOUR MONTHLY BALANCE, THAT BALANCE DOES NOT REDUCE LIKE IT DID ON THE WEBSITE. ON THE APP, IT ONLY EVER SHOWS YOU THE WHOLE BALANCE SO YOU HAVE GOT TO GO THROUGH ANY CREDIT TRANSACTIONS DURING THE CYCLE AND SUBTRACT THEM FROM THE TOTAL DUE THAT MONTH. IN THIS DAY AND AGE HOW ON EARTH CAN A BANK OPERATE LIKE THAT. THE REDUCING BALANCE FEATURE ON THE WEBSITE WORKED PERFECTLY.
FURTHER, I CANNOT SEE ANYWHERE WHERE IT TELLS YOU WHEN YOUR NEXT STATEMENT IS DUE.
I HAVE ALSO HAD A LOOK AT BARCLAYS ONLINE WHERE YOU CAN SEE YOUR B/CARD ACCOUNT NOW AND THAT IS THE SAME - ABSOLUTE RUBBISH.
NOTHING IS TRANSPARENT ANYMORE.
WHY ON EARTH THEY HAVE GOT RID OF WHAT WAS A VERY GOOD WEBSITE AND HANDED THEIR CUSTOMERS A RUBBISH APP AND A HALF BAKED WEBSITE WITHIN BARCLAYS ONLINE SYSTEM DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE AT ALL.
I HAVE TRIED TO EXPLAIN TO SOMEBODY THERE WHAT I MEAN AND IT WAS LIKE TALKING TO A BRICK WALL.
THEY HAVEN’T IMPROVED THE SYSTEM AT ALL BY CLOSING THE DEDICATED BARCLAYCARD WEBSITE, THEY HAVE GONE BACKWARDS BIG TIME.
