We were given a car that had damage on…
We were given a car that had damage on it and were given no option but to take that vehicle or have no rental car. We were not assured at that time that we wouldn't be charged for that damage, so we documented the damage for future use, if needed. It was definitely a very uncomfortable situation at the time due to a bit of a language barrier, and the fact that we had to walk down a sidestreet to get our car and then were just told 'here is your car', even though it didn't feel very official or that we were driving away in a legitimate vehicle, especially since it had existing damage. I took the insurance with rental company and have the backing of AMEX and our personal insurance, but it is always a bit unnerving to drive in a foreign country, and this type of situation did not leave us feeling very confident that we were dealing with a reputable company.

When they were most desperately needed, they exercised their power and abandoned you.
We rented a car in Catania (Sicily) for 7 days to tour the island. During our trip, a state of emergency was declared due to Mount Etna erupting, which forced the Catania airport to close for over 7 days. Consequently, our flight was rerouted to Palermo.We contacted Automania to request dropping off the car in Palermo instead of Catania given the crisis. The representative who answered the phone was incredibly rude and ended up shouting at me in Spanish: 'Madam, I already told you that if you leave the car in Palermo, it will cost you €1,500 for just a few hours.'They clearly prioritized exploiting desperate new customers—who were paying €700 to €800 for a mere 4-hour rental—over us, who had already been renting from them for a week. They told me to look for another company because they already had over 200 people waiting for my car. We had paid a substantial amount of money for that initial week, including full comprehensive insurance with zero excess.When they were needed most, they abused their power and left us stranded. They chose to price-gouge during a natural disaster just to maximize their profits. Absolute scammers. I would never, under any circumstances, recommend this company.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We are sincerely sorry that the situation that occurred during your trip caused you frustration and inconvenience. The eruption of Mount Etna and the resulting closure of Catania Airport created an exceptional and challenging situation for everyone, both customers and operators.
However, we would like to clarify some important aspects of the situation.
Once a rental contract has started, its terms or return location cannot be changed independently. Any modification to the contract, especially a return at a different city or airport, must first be reviewed and approved by our Administration Office. Therefore, a request to return the vehicle in Palermo cannot simply be authorized over the phone by the staff member handling the call.
We would also like to clarify that the cost of a one-way return is never decided or communicated independently by the staff answering the phone. The request must first be submitted to and approved by our Administration Office. Only after the Administration Office has approved the one-way return can the applicable cost be calculated, and it is the Administration Office that determines the cost based on the operational and logistical requirements of the specific case.
During those days, we were also dealing with a genuine operational emergency. Due to the closure of Catania Airport, numerous customers were reaching Sicily through other airports and traveling to Catania specifically to collect the vehicles they had booked. Consequently, vehicles that were originally scheduled to be returned to Catania were needed for customers who had already made long journeys from other airports and had existing reservations.
A vehicle being returned in Palermo instead of Catania would have generated substantial operational costs, including the recovery and transfer of the vehicle back to Catania. In addition, the vehicle was required immediately after the end of the rental for another customer. These are the reasons why a one-way return requires prior administrative approval and a specific calculation of the associated costs.
We nevertheless understand your frustration and are sorry that the communication you received by telephone was perceived as rude or unhelpful. It is never our intention to make a customer feel abandoned during an emergency, and we apologize if the way the situation was handled gave you that impression.
At the same time, we would like to clarify that we never intended to take advantage of the emergency or to leave our customers stranded. We were also dealing with an exceptional number of requests, cancellations, changes and unforeseen logistical challenges, while doing our best to continue providing service to as many customers as possible.
We respect your opinion and take your feedback seriously. Providing an exceptional experience is very important to us. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you again soon.

Great Experience - new car and smooth process
We rented a car from Automania in Naples for our Italy road trip, and the entire experience was seamless. Opting for full insurance turned out to be a lifesaver on the narrow Amalfi Coast roads. We had a tiny, barely visible scratch on the right wing mirror, but the return process was completely hassle-free with no questions asked. On top of that, the staff were incredibly helpful and even booked a taxi to the airport for our flight back to London. Highly recommended!

Sicily Vacation 2026
I highly recommend this car rental agency. I was looking for a good car with working air conditioning, full insurance, and a low deposit, and I got a white Opel Frontera (with 4,400 km on the clock) that still had that new-car smell, complete with an extended insurance package and a €100 deposit. The reservation, pickup, and drop-off processes were quick and efficient. The staff were professional and helpful. The office and parking lot are located right next to Catania Airport. I am very satisfied with the services provided by this rental company.
