Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 1,211 reviews, most reviewers were somewhat happy with their experience overall. Many customers find the platform easy to use for searching ancestors, building family trees, and accessing extensive records. People appreciate the available DNA resources and tools, which help them discover relatives and learn new facts about their family history, often describing the process as engaging and enlightening. However, some customers noted concerns regarding the accuracy of 'hints' and user-generated trees, finding them unreliable or based on guesswork. A few other people also felt that DNA results sometimes lacked detail or specific features like a chromosome browser. Additionally, some reviewers reported issues with automatic subscription renewals, unexpected charges, or difficulties contacting customer service for refunds.

Ancestry is easy to use

Ancestry is easy to use and has many copies of original records including parish records, rather than just transcriptions which can be inaccurate, making research much easier. You can also benefit from the research already done by others who have common ancestors with you.

I thought that ancestry was a good…

I thought that ancestry was a good platform for DNA and tracing your ancestors. But now they want more money to let you look at which parent you inherited your DNA from. So I don’t think they deserve anymore than 2 stars I’m very disappointed.

Hi there, Graham. Hello. We hear your disappointment, and we completely understand why moving advanced features like parental DNA breakdowns behind a membership fee feels frustrating.

We want to reassure you that your core DNA results—including your full ethnicity breakdown, communities, and complete DNA matches list—are free to access. Subscription tiers help support ongoing research and advanced technology like SideView™, but your feedback on pricing and feature access is valuable, and we appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us

DNA matching

I’ve solved the mystery of my paternal grandfather’s identity, with the invaluable help of Ancestry’s dna database. I still have mysteries further back to solve. It would help enormously if I could upload my “DECEASED” mother’s dna results, to confidently determine which dna matches are maternal and which are paternal. Thank you Ancestry you’ve helped a great deal but you could no more.

Hi there, James. Thank you for sharing your success story—discovering a grandfather's identity is a huge milestone! While raw DNA uploads from other companies aren't accepted on Ancestry, you can view shared matches if your mother tested directly with us by having her account share manager access with you. Our SideView™ tool also helps sort your matches into maternal and paternal sides automatically. Here's to uncovering the rest of your family story!

I started my Ancestry journey with a…

I started my Ancestry journey with a goal of finding where my Great Great Grandparents were laid to rest. After completing my search I found that I became more interested in my family history, ancestors on both sides of the family, and this led to me wanting to have my dns analysis done.
The whole process, from using the Ancestry site to get information, to having the dna test done, was interesting, enlightening and simple to do. Ancestry were very helpful and supportive throughout, and knowing that this company do their best to guide you through everything, means that I can enjoy the process even more.
I am so pleased that I joined the site, and am learning new facts about my ancestors every day!

Ancestry provides an easy site to create your family tree.

Ancestry provides an easy site to search for ancestors and create family trees. There are great sources available, an efficient search engine and helpful hints all of which have made the ease of putting my tree together a great pastime. In addition, DNA resources have added to the enjoyment. Contact with other researchers has been helpful and polite. The colour scheme used also makes it easy on the eyes too. Been a member for several years now. Highly recommend!
