Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 330 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people were dissatisfied with the pricing, frequently encountering hidden fees, unexpected charges, and aggressive upselling for insurance or upgrades, often doubling the initial rental cost. Customers also reported issues with the service, including unhelpful and rude staff, problems with payment methods, and cars that were dirty, poorly maintained, or not as promised. Reviewers also experienced difficulties with the product itself, such as receiving downgraded vehicles or cars with existing damage for which they were later charged. Some people were also dissatisfied with the staff, noting their unprofessional behavior and lack of communication, particularly when dealing with post-rental issues or disputes over charges.

I wouldn’t personally recommend Wheego…

I wouldn’t personally recommend Wheego Car Hire in Malaga based on my experience. While the car itself was basically okay and did the job for the week, the overall service left a lot to be desired.

The main issue was being excessively charged for what can only be described as a tiny, barely noticeable dent. This was especially frustrating because the car already had numerous larger dents, scuffs, and general damage when we picked it up. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a clear or reliable way to prove that this specific mark was already there, which put us in a difficult position when returning the vehicle.

On top of that, the communication was poor. The instructions for pickup and collection provided via email were unclear and, in some cases, inaccurate, which made the whole process more stressful than it needed to be.

Overall, while the car itself was acceptable, the lack of transparency, poor communication, and unfair charging practices mean I wouldn’t use this company again.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. We hired a car for one week in Liverpool airport through a third party company who have disbanded them. Upon return, an employee from Wheego went round the car on his own, (we know in future to inspect the car as well) and there was a scratch on the drivers side door, looked very fresh but we could not prove that we did not do this. So we accepted the scratch.we were then told that we would receive a price for the scratch to be fixed the following week. They want £1600 from us/insurance.After many phone calls to Wheego and being fobbed off every time we haven’t got any where. They make up the prices £150 to collect the car, £150 to deliver the car back, £1200 for the scratch and rest is VAT. This company is a joke and I hope people read these reviews and put this company out of business

Bait and switch, shady pressure, high deposit

Bait and switch. Avoid.
1. Booked through billigermietwagen app, showed up to a double check-in process where the agent had me redo all forms and document photos via QR while doing the exact same thing himself.
2. Then a drawn-out deposit and insurance spiel that felt deliberately designed to confuse and pressure (eg quoted 3600 eur in case of 4 tiny stone chips).
The agent actually asked me to cancel my app booking on the spot — mid-check-in — because “his customers do that.” The booking had 24hr phone cancellation terms…and no, shady!
3. Worst part: the car was downgraded without any notice. Just given a license plate on the collection slip - no make/model. At the collection garage, the attendant couldn’t hand over a better car because they were overbooked in their own system. The downgrade car was smaller than required, underpowered, very basic spec with no navigation, and the tire roar was constant. The handover protocol missed existing damage so watch out - it’s a big deal given the threats above!
4. I left my number for a supervisor — no call back. A digital assistant asked for feedback after the rental, promised an email. Nothing came.
5. Filed a complaint through Billiger. Wheego and Rentalcars take resolution: a €7 refund for a car downgrade. Laughable.
6. 900eur deposit is both much higher than the mainstream competitors and is refunded much later than the others do.

Avoid Wheego Málaga Airport

Avoid Wheego Málaga Airport – forced insurance and misleading practices

I booked a car with Wheego at Málaga Airport for 23–26 April 2026 with a confirmed price of €38.76. When I arrived, the desk agent refused to accept my credit card, claiming it was invalid because it only showed my initials and surname. This is not a standard requirement, and I have used the same card with many other international car hire companies without any issue.

I was then told that the only way to proceed with the rental was to buy Wheego’s own insurance, even though I already have an annual excess insurance policy with Evergreen. I was effectively forced into purchasing insurance I did not need or want, or I would not be given the car.

As a result, I was charged €143.75, which is €104.99 more than my booking voucher. My contract number was 25‑AGP‑4736.

After researching other reviews, this appears to be a common pattern at Wheego Málaga:

Refusing valid credit cards

Pressuring customers into unnecessary insurance

Charging far more than the confirmed booking price

This experience felt dishonest and manipulative. I would not use Wheego again and would advise others to be extremely cautious.

No service because we arrived after the proposed arrival time to collect the car. We were told if we paid an extra €49 the shuttle could collect us from the meeting point to then go to the office to collect the car. Dreadful, scammy behaviour.

Finally delisted!

I have some good news: this terrible, fraudulent business has now (at last) been de-listed by booking com (which also owns the Rental cars online booking site) due to the overwhelming negative reviews about their business practices. Let’s hope this is the final nail in the coffin of a company whose business model entirely depends on hitting their customers with additional charges while running a fleet of old and damaged cars. DO NOT GO NEAR WHEEGO - they WILL deduct money from your credit card for a spurious reason and then not respond.

Worst rental company ever

It’s such a bad company please stay away from them book with another company and save money.
They don’t have the type of car you asked after they send you away with a Skoda with a low oil level. After I asked them how to fix it they told me to go buy oil keep the receipt and they will pay me back. Now I’m 6 months and 15 emails further and they didn’t pay me or even answer my emails anymore.

A little update on my case

A little update on my case: as a reminder because of long queues through immigration due to the new visa entry rules I arrived at the Wheego office in Hamburg airport 45 minutes after the time I booked the car. They told me I had to pay a €50 euro additional charge for late pick up. This is clearly rubbish as there is no harm done arriving a little late when the car was still there and the staff were all bored and playing on their phones. I complained to their customer service dept who eventually came back and told me that the real reason was because I had requested and been given an upgrade. I hadn’t and I wasn’t. I asked for proof of this upgrade request but now they will not respond to emails or calls and they have kept my money. Another common scam they use is to charge a huge fee if you use a debit card rather than a credit card. In addition they will insist on taking a large amount of money from your card as a deposit (€2,000) in my case. All other rental companies simply block the funds on the card and don’t actually debit it. These guys do and then take an age to repay you. They will also deduct a whole variety of additional hidden charges. Do not under any circumstance use this company. Use a reputable hire car company. These guys are going bust and when they do, they will go bust with your cash.

Careful from this rent a car in dusseldorf airport

Subject: Formal Complaint – Payment Taken, Service Denied (Wheego / Ryanair Booking)
I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding a car rental booking made through Ryanair with Wheego at Düsseldorf Airport.
The booking was paid in advance using my Visa debit card. However, upon arrival to pick up the vehicle, I was informed that I must pay an additional €34.50 per day for insurance because I did not use a credit card.
This requirement was not clearly communicated at the time of booking.
Since I refused the unexpected extra charge, the company denied me the vehicle, meaning I did not receive the service I had already paid for.
The staff member at the counter informed me that, due to Easter, I would receive a refund by Tuesday or Thursday. However, as of Friday, I was told that I would not be refunded.
This is unacceptable. I paid for a service that was never provided.
I am therefore requesting:
A full refund immediately
A written explanation of why I was denied the service
Clarification of why the refund promised by your staff was not honored
If this issue is not resolved promptly, I will proceed with:
A chargeback through my bank
A complaint to the European Consumer Centre
Public reviews and escalation on consumer protection platforms
I expect a resolution within 7 days

Stay Away from Wheego

Upon arrival at Warsaw Chopin Airport at Wheego (Renaissance Warsaw Airport Hotel), the problems started immediately. My liability insurance was dismissed as invalid without any clear justification, and my credit card was rejected simply because it displayed initials instead of full first names, something entirely standard in my country. I have traveled to over 60 countries and rented cars in many of them, and I have never encountered such an issue.
The service provided by Daniel W. was absolutely unacceptable: rude, unprofessional, and completely lacking basic respect, even towards an 80-year-old customer. He was unable to handle straightforward questions and made no effort whatsoever to assist. The only “solution” offered was to purchase additional insurance costing twice the price of the rental itself, which strongly suggests a profit-driven tactic rather than genuine customer service.
What makes this even more absurd is that my debit card (with the same initials and surname) was accepted for payment, but not for the deposit. This inconsistency makes no sense at all. On top of that, I was required to sign a contract on a tiny screen without being able to properly read it; the full document was only sent to me later by email. No explanation, no transparency, this is both unethical and potentially unlawful.
The car was handed over without any instructions or explanation. When we had questions about navigation and the radio, the employee had already disappeared. Another staff member tried to help but was unable to provide any useful assistance.
Avoid Wheego at all costs. This is, without question, the worst car rental experience I have ever had.

Terrible - refused to honour insurance

Terrible! I had booked a car with WheeGo at Tirana Airport, Albania through economycarrentals.com, with insurance and a 1300 EUR excess. But, when WheeGo were ready to give me the keys at the desk, they told me I was responsible for the full value of the car - he said 20,000 or 30,000 EUR. When I showed them the voucher showing the excess, they said they had never heard of this website and it was nothing to do with them. I persevered, and tried to contact economycarrentals by phone but there was no answer.

It was 11pm, so I had to then get a hotel at the airport and rent a car at short notice from Alamo.

Neither company has since accepted any responsibility - WheeGo said "the customer was confused by the terms and conditions" and economycarrentals that "it was all verbal so there is no proof".

So, a terrible experience of poor customer service - I'd steer well clear and find a more reliable company.

Predatory Billing and Systematic Harassment—Avoid at All Costs!

I am writing this to warn any potential customers about the administrative incompetence and predatory practices of Share-Tec GmbH (Wheego). Do not let their low prices fool you; the "after-service" is a nightmare.
The Facts (Contract #1002044277):
The Error: Wheego attempted to charge me a €39.00 fee for a traffic fine management. However, my signed contract (Section XII, item 4) explicitly states a fixed fee of €32.00.Ignored Proof: I contacted them multiple times via email to pay the correct €32.00 amount.
They ignored my emails for months and refused to correct their billing mistake.Debt Collection Harassment: Instead of fixing the bill, they escalated the case to ETI experts GmbH, threatening me with legal action and inflating the "debt" to €98.58.Aggressive Tactics: I received incessant letters at my home in Ireland, threatening judicial enforcement and false claims about reporting me to credit agencies (SCHUFA) to pressure me into paying an illegal amount. The Resolution:It took a formal intervention from the European Consumer Centre (ECC) Ireland and my own threat of legal action for harassment for them to finally admit—in writing—that my contract was correct and they had to cancel the collection file.
Verdict:They are incapable of following their own legal agreements and will pursue you for a year over a few euros they aren't even owed. The stress and harassment are not worth the rental. Save yourself the trouble and book with a reputable company instead

Corrupt Company - Take no notice of the Customer Service auto-response

Why is there no option for zero stars?
I left a review on 16th March stating how Wheego's Liverpool branch manager had ripped me off for £1495, I then received a message from their Customer Service Dept asking for more details and saying they'd review my case.... That's just LIES, I have sent details and 2 e-mails requesting updates - no response.
This Company is corrupt!

Firstly I wouldn’t even rate this…

Firstly I wouldn’t even rate this company as 1 star .
I hired a car through Carjet with Wheego , I needed a small run around whilst visiting the uk .
The morning I collected the vehicle I was told that I couldn’t use a Debit card to pay for the rental and when I explained I didn’t have a credit card in my name the gentleman became agitated and said he couldn’t let me leave without a car because he’d had all sorts of problems with other people. He said he could let me have the rental but I would need to pay a £720 deposit which would be returned. I told him I had my own insurance and offered to show him , he said he didn’t need to see it .
I was showed to the vehicle which had many scratches which I took pictures of while the man was still there, I asked for the paperwork and was told it’s ok you’ve taken pictures, so I left with nothing no agreement or previous information on damage. When I got into the car it was filthy .
I returned the vehicle 11 days later with no problems, nobody was there to check the car I was told he was stuck in traffic . When I asked about my deposit I was told it would be returned in two weeks , when it failed to reappear in my bank account I rang the Wheego customer services and was told it would be retuned in 30 days , when that came and went I rang the Receptionist in Manchester who told me I had a different bungle and had agreed to pay an extra £720 for paying with my debit card (which is allowed according to their T&C) when I explained that there was no way I would of agreed to pay £895 for a weeks car hire he then offered to give me 50% off my next rental with them .
I have since contracted his Manger Sam in Liverpool who said he was shocked at this and said he would look into this matter but he has also failed to do anything about this, after he contacting me via WhatsApp he has now deleted all our messages and blocked me .
Dreadful customer service .

I rented a car for 2 days in Malaga…

I rented a car for 2 days in Malaga Spain. It cost me about $130 euros. The front desk guy wanted to charge me $144 for full insurance. I said no. So he took a $900 euro deposit. This has never happened to me but ok. Then when i returned the car same guy pointed out the little dent in back inside the door which i didnt take video of (who takes a picture or video of inside the door) and also he pointed out a slight brush scratch in front of the car which could have have been puffed out easily , seriously. They turned the deposit i to down payment and will charge me for the damages and if any money is left they will return the rest.
They lie. I have not made that damage and i bet they charge customers for the same car and same damage. This company and their people are dishonest. Dont use them.
They ruined my vacation with their lies.

AVOID AVOID

AVOID! AVOID!
Unfortunately- i have nothing good to say about this experience !
To start from the beginning.. - On arriving to pick the car- the guy at the reception was not happy that we did not want to upgrade to their insurance! We have purchased Premium insurance via Ryan Air car hire! Probably not very profitable for them..
**Then- the €1000 deposit was charged as payment - instead of being “on Hold” as all other car hire companies do.. which occurs extra transaction fees and interest!
**The car that was given to us- the windscreen sprinkler was not working- it might seems a very small problem, but on a rainy, snowy day, when every truck passes by you, your windscreen got muddy , you need to clean it! We had to stop 7 times on the motorway, as it was getting muddy, we could not see, to pour water from the bottles we had for drinking - so we CAN see and drive.. this was extremely dangerous- the car was just NOT FIT TO DRIVE!!!
And on the top of all - they got the worst - or shall i say non existent customer care!
It took them 47 working days after returning the car.. to get our €1000 deposit back!
They come up with different excuses, 20 business days at first, then 10 extra business days to get a respond to our email enquiry - as no other option to communicate with them..? + another 17 working days - final proceeding stage of returning your deposit.. total 47 +
There is no phone number - where you can make a complain! Only Front of Office phone number - for new clients..
Once they got your money- they just dont care for you any more..
My advise would be if you have fallen in their trap- file a charge back with your credit card provider as soon as possible- for that- you need their text message or email confirmation that you have returned the car with no issues- which you have to insist to get at the time of returning your car!
We have hired from other Bulgarian car hire businesses before and after! Never seen such a bad business practice! Everybody else - returns your deposit at the second you return your car- and being checked! In case of any penalties or speeding tickets- thats why you leave your address there!
I am sorry, i wish there was something good i can say- unfortunately the whole experience was very stressful and negative for me..
and not just for me.. we were large group of friends- that hired few cars together.. we all got same bad experience.. - the rest of the reviews are coming soon..
