I’m updating my review: The company has refunded me most of my money. They were quick to contact me after I posted this. I am now somewhat satisfied with my experience.

I still think their Customer Service is flawed (likely due to the size of the Organization) and that their auto billing situation is severe (meaning it is a subscription model - it’s varsity subscriptions, not Varsity Tutors).

And in a family emergency their tutors are not trained to remind customers to turn off their subscription. In my mind A Tutor is somebody who looks out for you and catches your blind spots. I think this is where the original confusion lies for me: Something about a Tutor being a humanizing force to take care of a student rather than a name employed by a subscription model, which if you fail to properly set up, will charge you regardless of a family emergency

It should be clear that Varsity Tutors is varsity subscriptions and the tutors they hire are regular people who come from a wide range of backgrounds.

People who sign up should be aware of this distinction and then they may have a wonderful time once the clarity of the model is understood! It is likely lots of people have positive experiences who properly understand the model.

As a publicly traded company, their systems are possibly designed for corporate gain, as allowable by law.

The company is a scam in that they are in it for the money and procedures, not the human customer experience. I was on auto bill when I had a medical emergency hit my family. The autobill went on for 4 months until I caught it, focused on my family of origin. I had one session at that point and paid 375 a month for 4 months. Upon notifying them, their compassion was non existent and they insisted on their policies. They refused to refund me for missed months and their staff had no recourse nor care for the situation. As for the one session, the tutor was making it up mostly, had a dog and child in the background, and was not professional.

I am writing this to warn others about the predatory subscription practices at Varsity Tutors. While they are quick to sign you up, they make it intentionally difficult to leave. There is no way to cancel your subscription online; you are forced to call a customer care line where representatives are try retention tactics to keep you paying.

In my experience, I was kept on hold for over 30 minutes just to speak to someone. Furthermore, I was given explicit assurances by representatives that I would receive a callback before my renewal date to discuss my options—that call never came.

Beyond the billing headaches, the platform relies heavily on AI features that I found to be completely useless. You are much better off finding a direct-hire tutor or utilizing the wealth of free, high-quality coaching available on YouTube.

Got everything as promised. Discontinuing is a cumbersome process is only knock.

DO NOT RECOMMEND!! Please save your money! I signed up to help with one of my college standardized test. I got match with my tutor very quick but was not a good “match” at all. Every time we meet I just answered questions on my own and sometimes I would ask questions and my tutor would not respond (honestly sounded like she was driving or doing her dishes). We would just go over all of my answers at the very end which was such a waste of time because we never had enough time for her to explain or to work though the questions I was struggling on. I had three hours left whenever I was trying to get a new tutor but was not match for a long time so I decided to cancel and try to get a partial refund with the hours I didn’t use because it is an expensive program and I am unfortunately a broke college student. I was able to cancel my membership, but within seven minutes they declined my refund with no explanation. I am still trying to get a refund and currently very upset with the service that I got with Varsity Tutors.

Big shout out to Varsity Tutors and Gabriel who was absolutely amazing. I needed help in Foundations of Math, and Gabriel came to the rescue. He was extremely knowledgeable and patient with me. I ended up with an A in the class! He’s an asset to the company. Thank you Gabriel.

In my opinion, my experience with Varsity Tutors felt like a scam.

Based on my personal experience, I do not recommend Varsity Tutors.

I continued to be charged monthly even after I believed my service had been stopped. During one tutoring session, my tutor's internet connection was interrupted, so the lesson could not continue. Even though the problem was on the tutor's side, I was still charged for the session.

Trying to resolve these billing issues was extremely frustrating. I was not satisfied with the customer support I received, and my concerns were not handled fairly.

If you have given them your credit card information, I recommend checking your credit card or bank statements regularly to make sure all charges are accurate.

Based on my experience, I would never use Varsity Tutors again.

Matched with an exceptional physics tutor for AP exam prep. The interactive online whiteboard feature makes working through complex practice problems seamless. Score improved dramatically after eight sessions.

We absolutely love, varsity tutor and we love our tutor Mr. Aaron he is amazing. He works so well with my son and keeps him engaged. I will say it is not cheap. It is a high car payment every month, but it is very worth it.

My session was delayed by 30 minutes. The timing was off, which made it hard to fit into my day.

Terrible. I wanted to know some more information about the program (because it was not listed on the website) and after I filled out their form, they started calling continuously. I ended up finding a better tutor before I could get back to them and assume they would wait for me to set up a call, like any normal company. Nope. They called continuously till I had to block them. I picked up on of their calls and said "not interested stop calling" and I continued to receive calls. 0/10 terrible costumer service DO NOT RECCOMEND. They are just trying to call so they can push people for their money rather than put their rates and information on their website.

The varsity tutors phone representatives continue to be very helpful and I truly appreciate their assistance. However, it has been an ongoing struggle finding and keeping good tutors. Fortunately, after a year a frequent turnaround, my son has 1 tutor who remains consistent and another tutor who is approaching that status. Also, the program being uses by varsity tutors deleted tutors from my account that their representatives invested time into helping me schedule and reschedule which is unfortunate.

Requested a tutor. Never got one. They didnt refund my money despite them saying it was their fault. Never using this service again.

The tutor was excellent. However, since he wasn’t local, and the class was an honors physics course without a text book, he did not have access to the specific class materials.

Although we finally landed on a tutor that worked well with our middle schoolers, the first tutor was clearly experiencing dementia. While we felt for his situation, I do not know how he passed any of their hiring processes. He told my daughter the same 3 stories at least 5 times in each of the 2 sessions with her. Second, the tutor who started strong started canceling last minute with us in 6/8 sessions, and we had no time in our schedules to make up missed sessions before our billing cycle was up. We would call, customer service would claim they were crediting us for the next cycle, said they would not appear until the next cycle started, but then they would not show. Then they had a lot of glitches after redesining their website including no way to get to the help center (it would tell you to log in even though you were and then would tell you it was the wrong username and password). Then, even though we spoke 3 times over the phone discussing issues and letting them know we were not i terested in "make up" sessions over the summer when my kids had no school w9rk for which they would need assistance, they kept insisting on that instead of a refund for all the sessions missed because of last minute cancelations. On top of it, I discussed a pause over the summer with two different representatives hoping for a 60 day pause but they said they could only allow 30, which I accepted, but then I was still charged for the month. I asked for a refund which they then declined. Great concept, some tutors are great but inconsistent and customer service is terrible.

Anthony is an outstanding AP World History Tutor! He explained difficult concepts in a way that was easy to understand, kept every session engaging, and help build confidence. Our daughter grades increased tremendously after spending 2 months with Anthony tutoring. Highly recommend Anthony to any students struggling in AP World.

This is the absolute worst company I have ever done business with. You should not ever request a tutor from this company. They are entirely unprofessional and do not listen. I had a long conversation with a rep in my state detailing what I wanted. She said yes. The tutor then proceeded to cancel and reschedule all sessions for the times I said my daughter was unavailable. Dozens of texts. They got me a new tutor who then didn’t start in the day I asked. The night before her session, she cancelled. At 8:45 pm—texting and emailing. This is after five more conversations with four different HQ people. I am currently waiting for a “review” to get a full refund. This is a trash company, run horribly and unprofessionally. They should be shut down. I’m in the process of documenting every single thing that occurred, what was said, and what was promised and the “CEO” bro will be hearing from me.
