Fast, easy, and much cheaper

This process was fast, easy, and of course much cheaper than dealer or local locksmith. I watched the video and it was a piece of cake, exactly as described. I will be back if I ever need other keys and certainly will recommend to anyone that needs it.

Horror show

Horror show, I was due a refund for security deposit, programmer (did not work), FOB and tax. First only refunded security deposit. Let rep know the amount that was due, then she refunded for programmer. Then let her know I returned FOB. Then I got a third refund. It's a really sketchy situation when a merchant keeps the tax. So I let her know she forgot the tax. Never experienced anything like it. After all this time and effort I still do not have a working FOB.

Hello John,

We’re very sorry to hear about your frustrating experience, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

After reviewing how your refunds were processed, we acknowledge there was confusion in issuing the full refund all at once. That’s on us, and we understand how this could have caused frustration and concern. We should have handled it more clearly and efficiently.

To clarify, we did issue a full refund for the rental fee—even though the programmer successfully programmed the transponder key—which suggests the issue may have been with the remote fobs, not the programmer. Additionally, we refunded the full amount of taxes, even though only part of the order was returned. Our goal was to make things right, even beyond policy, and we’re sorry this wasn’t more clearly communicated.

We’re a small, family-owned business that genuinely strives to do honest work and support our customers. Your feedback helps us improve how we handle refund cases and better communicate our actions moving forward. If you still need assistance, we’d be happy to help however we can.

Frustrating and Disappointing

Was pretty disappointed with this experience. Found my key and was immediately prompted to also purchase the photo key cutting. Ok. Fine, still cheaper than the dealership. Then came the follow up emails. They needed more info, ok, but seems like that should have been part of the original purchase process. Then I was informed that I would need to spend another $40 because they could not get the key from their supplier but could get an OEM reburbished key. That was frustrating… but after a couple more emails they decided they could use the money from the additional photo key service that apparently didn’t need to purchase, there was a $10 price difference that would need to be refunded to me, but they didn’t start processing that refund. Weird that they didn’t bring this up sooner. They said they would ship it out soon. Followed up after a few days when I didn’t get any shipping info. Got an email that said they placed the order for the refurbished one but didn’t have a delivery date (that info would have been nice without my prompting), then later that day got another email saying they couldn’t get it and I would need to pay another $100 to get a new OEM key. At this point I gave up and asked for a refund. Only reason I’m giving them 2 instead of 1 stars is they at least responded quickly to my emails and processed the refund without hassle. There were a lot of opportunities for them to step up and be proactive or to make things right by eating the cost to get me my key, but they chose not to. I have another vehicle that I need a key for that I would have used them for if this one went well, but needless to say I’ll be looking elsewhere for both now. Was a frustrating and disappointing experience.

Hello Tori,

We're truly sorry to hear about your frustrating and disappointing experience. We appreciate you taking the time to share these details — it gives us a clear picture of where we fell short and how we can do better.

We acknowledge that the process should have been much smoother. The need for additional information after purchase and the lack of clear communication about the key variations and sourcing delays certainly created confusion and inconvenience. You're absolutely right that we should have been more proactive in setting expectations and providing timely updates without the need for follow-up on your end.

We also recognize that the shifting costs and unclear status updates added to the frustration. While our team did their best to explore all sourcing options and provide a cost-effective alternative, we understand that this should not have come at the expense of your time and confidence in our service.

Thank you for acknowledging the quick refund process. We’re reviewing this internally to improve how we handle special key sourcing and post-order communications. Your feedback will help us better serve future customers.

We’re very sorry again for the inconvenience caused, and we appreciate the opportunity to improve from this experience.

Great support.

I contacted your support for a mistake I made, and you helped me correct it. It doesn't get any better than that.

We gave Tom's a try...

We made an excellent choice using Tom's. They cut and shipped to the house in less than a week. I watched the utube video and glanced at the instructions. 10 minutes later,I had a flawless second key. The grand total less than $150.The dealer quoted $200 for the key and cut,$145 for the programing. I have the programmer for future keys if needed. The dealership's charge is without warrant. Tom's was simple easy and inexpensive. Very happy with the entire transaction.

Fast and easy key program

After contacting a dealer and an independent lock smith to program a key for my Subaru I came across Tom’s Key Company and it was a 1/3 of the cost. I received a blazer cut key that I download a couple of pictures of and a new fob with a program dongle. It was quick and very easy to program to my car. Will be a return g customer if I ever need a new fob.

I purchased a key fob for my 2016…

Update. I finally got the correct FOB and the programming was easy - Just as advertised. I also was able to speak with Customer Support who asked the magic question which was the FCC Fob code on the back of the original Toyota FOB. From there it was smooth sailing.

I also bought a generic programmable Fob for my 2011 Lincoln as the original had quit working. That one programs without the rental programming tool from Tom’s.

So they did eventually come through for me. If they just improve the in person phone customer support life will be a lot easier for customers of advanced age like me. My original post said avoid Tom’s Keys like the plague. I’ve softened that based on follow on customer help. When I got the right FOB it was very quick and easy

—————————-
Original Post
I purchased a key fob for my 2016 Toyota Highlander. This experience has been one of the most frustrating of my life.

I filled out the information about the make/model of the car. I sent them the VIN and received a package with a new FOB , a programming tool and an android phone with an app to do the programming.

I watched the video - several times and tried repeatedly to to the programming - no luck.

I began emailing Tom’s keys for help. They responded by referring it to someone in support. Still no luck. Turns out they needed an FCC ID from my working FOB which revealed I had ordered the wrong FOB. It was 3 button and I needed a 4 button. So I had to wait for another FOB.

Again several times I begged for someone to call me. No dice. Everything is email. Fill out the request…wait for a response… But never will these people actually speak with you.

So today is it. This has been going on for weeks. I don’t know if my experience is representative of their Customer Service or not but it has been absolutely horrible. My advice is avoid Tom’s Keys like the Plague.

At this point I just want clear instructions on sending this stuff back. Unless Tom figures out how to use a phone i don’t want to waste another minute on his product.

Hello Dennis,

We're very sorry to hear about your frustrating experience, and we appreciate you sharing this detailed feedback.

After reviewing the order and support history, we understand the confusion and delay stemmed from a mismatch in key compatibility, which wasn’t fully identified until the FCC ID was provided. We acknowledge that this should have been clarified earlier in the process and regret the inconvenience this caused.

Our customer service representative has since reached out by phone and helped arrange a replacement OEM remote for your Toyota Highlander. We’re currently awaiting confirmation once you've received and tested the new key.

Regarding your feedback on communication, we recognize that email-only support can be frustrating in complex cases like this. While our process is designed to keep detailed records and ensure accuracy, we understand a phone conversation can often make things much clearer. We’re actively working to improve the availability of live support options, including call-back services, to better assist customers moving forward.

Thank you again for your patience, and we’ll continue to monitor this case closely until a resolution is fully reached.

A Great deal!

Had some confusion with the app. But figured it out. Nice to program a key in a matter of minutes and,at least half the price of a dealership.

Simple instructions, anyone can do this!

Programmed a new fob for a 2014 Sienna in less than 10 minutes with no problems. The instructions were clear and simple. Anyone can do this if they take their time.

When I had an issue getting my return shipping label, customer support responded to me same-day and fixed it.
