Disappointing Experience with Hidden Costs
I had high hopes when I ordered the Paperback Formatting service from The Urban Writers, but the experience turned out to be disappointing and frustrating.
After placing my order, I was informed that I would need to pay an additional $150 in "Out of Scope" (OOS) fees just to begin formatting — because my manuscript wasn’t already converted into eBook format. This was never mentioned during the ordering process, and I find it unacceptable that such a critical requirement was hidden behind vague definitions of scope.
To make matters worse, the assigned formatter was unresponsive for several days, and even the support team admitted that his messages hadn’t been delivered. While they were polite and tried to help, the solution remained the same: pay extra or don’t get the service.
If these formatting steps were essential, they should’ve been included in the base package or clearly stated upfront. Instead, I felt like I was being upsold just to access what I had already paid for.
I requested a refund and will be taking my business elsewhere.
If you value transparency and efficiency, I would not recommend this service.

Very low quality manuscript
The AI option to create the book is not cheap and of very low quality. It lacks depth, and the writer wasn't willing to make edits, as he pays per word generated. I could use 5k words of the 50k I paid for. It was a very bad output.

Collaborative lack
The inability to collaborate effectively in the editing process is a significant drawback. I can hire a line editor for the same price and can go back and forth with edits. This platform entirely restricts collaboration. I wouldn't recommend this product if someone were looking for line editing only.

5 star freelancers
I found the freelancers I used on urban writers five star. However with each stage being cut off was annoying as I think writers should be able to have a more flowing experience and there be no cut off until the author has published their book.

Apalling customer service and…
Apalling customer service and monitoring of contractors. Had to constantly chase completion of various stages. Admin team were next to useless, claiming emails were lost or filed with employees that had left the organisation. Their formatting contractors were picking up mistakes from writer and editor. Having to back track repeatedly to get errors fixed. Use internal company terms when communicating with customers and expect you to know what they are talking about. Beligerant and haughty editor and writer, that both did a very poor job, well the editor didn't actually do anything. Paid a premium for a very mediocre service and constantly having to send emails to ask admin to enforce deadlines and ask for fixes. Which were mostly ignored. Pages with non standard font and ruled lines were considered as pictures, and absurd amount of time spent to weed through being bombarded by contractors after posting a job. Many with zero experience in the subject of the book, but they just lie and pretend they do. The admin team do not vet or assist in ensuring writers are honest about their experience. Writers, editors, illustrators have complete control of the revies that are submitted for them. In other words, they only allow good reviews to be posted. No one on this platform has a bad review. Impossible. I left appropriate reviews for editor and writer. Neither was posted.

Correspondent with your team is great But for my first time and learning how the processes work wasn’t straightforward. I made mistakes not knowing who was responsible for what and when having to go back a step process costed me. What should have been 2000 NZD cost me 4000 NZD.
