Could it be that you used a different company perhaps? There are a few out there with similar names to ours.

Harassment
The Tax Refund company, not only ripping people off, they have added harassment to their list of services.
They do not respond to requests to remove people from their database and desist from emailing despite being told several times.

Again, our sincere apologies for the mix up.
We take matters like this very seriously, so identified where the error occurred and how you ended up getting a further email (after asking for your details to be me removed) when you contacted us to let us know that it had happened.
Thankfully, you letting us know has not only lead to us correcting the issue for you personally, but has also helped us identify a rare loophole in one of our processes. To put things into perspective, we have helped literally thousands of clients over the past 30 years and we have not had this particular set of circumstances occur before now.
Regardless of it not having caused us an issue previously (otherwise we would have addressed it already) it has allowed us to close the loophole and remove the potential for the same thing to happen for other clients in the future.

Thanks for getting in touch, sorry to hear that you thought the process was a waste of time.
As you know, we offer a no-win-no-fee service which does exactly what it says on the tin - if you're not due a refund then we don't get paid for the professional review of your tax circumstances.
This means that clients are guaranteed that we will work hard to ensure that we re-claim every penny that they're are owed by HMRC as well as ensuring that their tax codes get corrected moving forward. So, not only do they get any overpaid tax refunded, but will also pay less tax in future.
Part of our fee structure includes a minimum fee of just £35 + VAT (again, only due where we obtain a refund for the client) which is what has happened in your situation.
When a client applies for our service, we review their circumstances and although we have a good idea of what they may be due, we can never be 100% certain until HMRC have fully dealt with any claim that we have submitted. However, all clients receive the same professional review and service regardless. Where a refund is above £100 we simply take a percentage, but where a refund is under £100, we charge our minimum fee (as above).
Were you to employ an accountant with the same level of expertise that we offer, it would cost between £125 - £250 per hour, which would be payable whether a refund was due or not.
So, although we appreciate it's not the result you may have been hoping for (as it wasn't for us either) a one off fee of £35 + VAT for the service you have received and for the ongoing tax savings you will now be making is actually excellent value...and hopefully not a waste of time.

Love this free, easy service.
Love that this is a free service. It’s easy to submit the necessary information, and super handy that it’s all online. The to-do list is great, along with the to-do list reminders. I also like that they’ll message well you after they’ve checked your tax code, to ask if you’d like them to repeat the check. Especially useful around the times when HMRC send out new tax code notices.

Hi Martin, well I suppose that depends on a combination of a few things -
1 - Your definition of "a few".
We try to keep our application process simple and straightforward, using as few questions as possible. Essentially we look at the information that HMRC require and try to turn that into the simplest, fewest and most straightforward set of questions we can, to make it easy for our clients to complete the application process.
If you look at most of the reviews on this site, they generally reflect that.
2 - How complicated your individual circumstances are.
An example of this might be if you have had multiple jobs within the 4 year period that we will review for you, or perhaps you potentially qualify for a number of different areas where you could be over-paying tax. In those instances, there would be more questions to answer, but as above - we make them as easy to answer as possible.
The added bonus in circumstances like that is that those types of clients are usually entitled to a larger refund, so it's definitely worth working through them to find out.
3 - Whether you've ever tried dealing with HMRC directly yourself.
Those that try, and then come to us instead, appreciate that we really are only asking a few questions.
