The Photographers Gallery – Workshop of Framing and Composition – Isabelle Young – November 2024

I feel defrauded. I have taken many photography course in-person and online, and this is the worst ever. The content is all but Framing and Composition. The presentation only went through a series of photographs described as exceptional, but without explaining what makes them exceptional, and without providing any clue on composition rules. There were only two fleeting slides covering the rule-of-thirds (really?) and the Fibonacci spiral/Golden Ration (really?). Primary school stuff. Still, even those basic rules were not elaborated, discussed, analysed, etc. And there is so much more that could have been presented and discussed.
The morning section was advertised as 10:30am until 1:30pm, but it finished abruptly at 12:15pm, and we were forcibly asked to leave the room, to reconvene at 2:30pm at the British Museum.
The afternoon assignment was about photographing the British Museum, performing several tasks. What an inappropriate choice of location! The British Museum on a Saturday afternoon? Really? Are you sure that the crowd will facilitate photography? Are you sure that security guards will not have a say? I have had terrible experiences with security guards in other renowned places, despite pre-clearance with the venues, I found myself shouted up from security and prevented from taking pictures. Why not choose a less controversial place? Street (Soho is just around the corner), a square, a historical building… they choose instead the worst place ever for a Saturday afternoon photoshoot.
Finally, I was not impressed by the tuition, Isabelle might have a Master from a prestigious College, but tuition was rather plain and just illustrative, no insight on what really works in framing and composition.
If at all possible, I will seek a refund and never again take a course with The Photographers Gallery, which has, otherwise, exceptional exhibitions.

Buy here *only* if you can wait a decade

Buy from here only if you don't mind waiting a decade.

Ordered photographic film 1 week ago. Despite the promise in the confirmation email, 5 days later I had received no confirmation of dispatch. I followed up to no response and one week later they confirmed it was finally dispatched. Far too late for the project I had planned and no apology.

No communication and no film one week later...

The Photographers' Gallery is superb !

The Photographers' Gallery is in a very convenient location in central London - on a small street just off Oxford Street close to Oxford Circus tube station. The gallery has a programme of very interesting photography exhibitions and an excellent shop that sells books, cards, films and some cameras. There is also a print sales gallery where you can buy original prints. On the ground floor there is a small cafe selling hot and cold drinks and food. The gallery also organises a very interesting programme of talks, events and courses. Ordinary membership is relatively cheap. I have been a member since the 1980s and think that the Photographers' Gallery only gets better and better. It's absolutely superb.
