Like me you've probably watched Sonny's lifts on Instagram with awe but hesitant to click the link offering the opportunity to work with him. I clicked and didn't expect to be on a 1-1 call with him the next week.
I didn't know what to expect from an online coach, let alone one as infamous as Sonny. He is a natural coach. He knows when to support and when to dish out the tough love. His coaching cues hit home every time. My technique has been transformed and my numbers have made huge jumps. Most +10kg across the year and I wasn't new to lifting. I had just plateaued with previous coaches and programming. Sonny's feedback just clicked and unlocked a new level.
You gotta just trust Sonny's programming. Sometimes I look at the programmed weight towards the tail end of a block and think "was he high writing these percentages ?!" but HE KNOWS.
I don't work in fitness. I am a high school teacher who trains 2 hours 3 times a week for enjoyment and personal progress. Sonny is fully invested in everyone's goals regardless of how small you might think they are. He is genuinely invested in and celebrates everyone's wins.
Amazing first 12 week block
I just finished my first 12 week block with 1 on 1 coaching with Sonny. It was nothing short of amazing. I am a 42 year old masters athlete that had to take some time away after starting weightlifting due to injuries.
After this initial 12 week block, I am very close to being back to the strongest I’ve ever been, but now I’m completely healthy and more mobile than ever. Furthermore, my technique is night and day from when I started just 3 months ago - I have some chronic bad habits I learned unfortunately at the start of my weightlifting career about 4 years ago.
His programming is spot on, and he makes adjustments on the fly if you need him to. I truly feel I will never look for another program ever again!!!

For me the essential part is Technique, if you don't have a great technique most likely you will get hurt and or it will take longer to go up in weight and here is where this program really helps ! Hands down the best one to one coaching I’ve ever experienced! Sonny makes sure he personalises your program so it’s catered to ‘You’ and then gives up his time to give you all the feedback you need to ensure you are correcting the things that need to be corrected but also focuses a lot on the positives and what you’re actually doing well. Plus all my numbers have increased in every lift which is proof what he does works!

Fell in Love!
I did Sonny’s 1:1 so I could become a better coach by being learner. What I didn’t expect was to fall in love with a new sport because of a coach who is incredibly insightful, encouraging and fun. The variety in Sonny’s programming has kept me engaged and making gains all the time. It has not only made me a better lifter but also a better coach. My experience with Sonny and the team at The Lifting Zone has been awesome! I have been a competitive CrossFitter for a few years now and felt that I needed some additional weightlifting coaching so I reached out to The Lifting Zone for some help. I was hoping to see some improvement in my weightlifting after my 12 week program but saw dramatic improvements not only in my lifting but also my mobility within the first 3 weeks! The daily feedback and weekly zoom calls have kept me in check as to the specifics I need to be focusing on. And even though we have a huge time difference my questions were always answered in a timely manner. Not one negative thing to say. Huge thank you to the whole team. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
No experience to 60kg snatch.
Completed a 16-week training block with Sonny, having no experience in Olympic weightlifting. Started off not being able to squat lower then parallel with the ground, neither could I snatch or C&J. With Sonny coaching me, reviewing my form and technique daily we were able to work on my form. We’d also have a once weekly team Zoom meeting with Sonny and his other clients which as a group. We’d all review our weeks workouts and discuss as a group how we can improve for the following week. Which was also a good opportunity to meet other like minded individuals. Working on my mobility daily using his mobility manual, applied with his incredible programming, enabled me to sit nice and low in my 125Kg squat, 100Kg front squat, 60Kg snatch and 90Kg C&J. Which where all PR’s for me at the end of my 16-week block.
Great program
Really loved the program, and the workouts in the truecoach app, helped me improve all my weights, technique and mobility, and sonny is a great coach!
I had never Olympic lifted before…
I had never Olympic lifted before signing up. Under Sonny’s coaching I learned how to safely perform Snatch and Clean & Jerk. His instructions were so clear it felt very easy to trust and follow his plan, and he was on hand pretty much 24/7 for any questions. He would also adapt the plan on request around your schedule which was amazing. Weekly calls with others also made you feel part of a community and allowed you to learn from others. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in Olympic lifting .
Massive Gains in lifting and knowledge
As a beginner I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to weightlifting. I really enjoyed the programming - never got boring or stale - and the quick feedback on my lifts meant I could implement changes immediately. Sonny is super approachable and friendly but had no issues telling me where I needed to improve, down to the littlest detail.
I would highly recommend this for anyone who wants to take their lifting to the next level.
