Offensively overpriced mediocrity

Visited the Borough restaurant with a friend for a catch up whilst in London on business. The decor is nice, however the tables are a little to close together, which can make it quite noisy and difficult to hear the other side of your own conversation. The food was ok, nothing particularly special, however my steak was quite seriously undercooked, as you can see from the image. I asked for medium rare and it was very clearly in the rare camp on arrival. Luckily I can eat a steak undercooked (just not overcooked) but for the price that did not meet my expectations, however looking at other reviews this seems to be a common occurrence.

Talking about the price they charge, there is no other way to describe it than offensively overpriced for mediocre food. My friend and I had a medium ribeye each (not Kobe or Wagyu or anything like that), a portion of chips each, one other standard side (again not lobster or monkfish or anything extravagant), 3 glasses of mid range wine and a dessert each, no starters. Imagine our surprise when the bill for this two course midweek meal arrives and we are requested to pay £239.06!!

Interestingly, my husband, who was jealous that I was going out for a steak dinner, decided to visit our local Miller and Carter with his friend on the same evening and had almost exactly the same meal we had. The quality of ingredients was just as good (although the cooking of the steak was more accurate) and they had the same number of similar drinks and courses and their bill came to around £100, nearly 2.5 times less than what Hawksmoor have the cheek to charge.

Just to be clear, the food, service, ambience is NOT worth anywhere near the uplift they expect you to pay for the same food that you can get elsewhere for a fraction of the price. Save your money to enjoy yourself rather than lining the unscrupulous owners and shareholders of Hawksmoor.

Below Average

Ate at Hawksmoor, Manchester for the first time today. We were a party of four. The problems: All four steaks were undercooked. Some aged appearance, yellowed and spotted leaves in the watercress salad. We had asked for a quick service to enable two of us to get back to work on time. Service was slow. Had to repeat the request twice. When the food did arrive, the two who had to return to work had to eat quickly and leave while the other two were still eating. It broke up our group. Things I liked: The chips were excellent. Overall: A steakhouse that fell short, "Below Average".

Hawksmoor at Borough...Very Mixed Feelings

Hawksmoor at Borough – Sunday Roast on August 25th

My partner and I recently chose Hawksmoor at Borough to celebrate our anniversary with their renowned Sunday Roast on August 25th. While the afternoon started on a positive note, the overall experience left us with mixed feelings.

Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted, and the staff made a lovely gesture by congratulating us on our anniversary, which certainly made the occasion feel special. We were swiftly shown to our table in a very busy and noisy, restaurant. The ambiance was energetic, but the noise levels made it difficult to have a comfortable conversation.

Our server, who was pleasant and polite, promptly handed us the menu and drinks list. However, within just two minutes, she returned to take our order. We barely had time to settle into our surroundings, let alone thoughtfully peruse the menu. The rushed pace made us feel somewhat uncomfortable, as though we were under pressure to decide quickly rather than savour the experience.

Despite this, our drinks and water were delivered promptly. About 15 minutes later, our highly anticipated roast beef arrived. The beef itself was perfectly cooked, but the portion size was disappointing. It became apparent, upon glancing at the plates of nearby diners, that we had been served significantly smaller portions—approximately half the thickness of others' cuts. This disparity in portion size was frustrating, especially considering the quality of the roast beef was overshadowed by the oversized Yorkshire pudding and the accompanying seasonal vegetables.

The hispi cabbage was undercooked and lacked flavour, while the braised carrots were well-prepared. Unfortunately, the roast potatoes fell short—they weren't crispy on the outside or light and fluffy on the inside, as one would expect from a traditional Sunday roast. The marrow gravy, while flavourful, was lukewarm, but the surprise addition of the roasted half head of garlic added a welcome depth of flavour. The additional side of cauliflower gratin was a highlight; it was well-cooked and, along with the garlic, helped elevate the dish.

After finishing our meal, the table was quickly cleared, and the dessert menu was provided. We decided not to order dessert and instead asked for the bill. It was then that a complimentary dessert was presented to us, with "Happy Anniversary" elegantly written in milk chocolate around the plate's edge. While this was a nice touch, it felt somewhat like an afterthought, given that it was only presented after we had requested the bill.

As we shared the dessert, something quite surprising and unpleasant happened. A server, cleaning the adjacent table (barely 45 cm from where I was seated), began spraying a detergent. To my astonishment, I felt the spray hit my left elbow. Thankfully, my partner and I had finished eating by then, but the experience left us speechless and put a damper on what should have been a memorable occasion.

In summary, while there were moments of enjoyment during our meal, the overall experience was underwhelming, particularly considering Hawksmoor's reputation. The rushed service, uneven portion sizes, and the final unfortunate incident left us with a less-than-ideal impression of what should have been a special anniversary celebration.

Best avoided

Normally, a reliable brand but the last couple of times we have purchased Hawksmoor steaks from Ocado they have been extremely disappointing. Too much gristle and too little taste. Not acceptable at this price point. I would give them a wide berth until they sort their supply chains out.

Petrol brush cutter worked only 15 minutes

Petrol brush cutter was a huge disappointment. It never worked properly and when I sent it back for repair/replacement and they had no clue whatsoever of what was wrong and refused to do anything about it. It was sent back to me broken. I'll never purchase anything from them again.

Guaranteed good steak

Phenomenal steak.
I am normally not into chain restaurants so was put off going to here for so long and what a regret. Good quality cuts of meat and such a varied selection.
We went here for a birthday and they brought out a special dessert. They went above and beyond helping us celebrate, we will definitely be coming back.
The venue is gorgeous alone just for cocktails.
