An Engaging and Insightful Introduction to European Art History have greatly enjoyed the course so…

I have greatly enjoyed the course so far and found it both intellectually stimulating and very well structured. The modules provide an excellent balance between historical context, artistic analysis, and wider cultural interpretation, making complex developments in art history accessible without oversimplifying them.

One of the strongest aspects of the course is the way it links artworks to broader social, political, and philosophical ideas. For example, the discussions around the Counter-Reformation, academic theory, Rococo culture, and Neoclassicism have helped demonstrate that art history is not simply about style, but about changing ideas, institutions, and values.

The written materials are detailed and academically rigorous, yet still engaging to read. I particularly appreciate the inclusion of close visual analysis alongside discussion of theory and historical context. The use of specific artworks to illustrate larger themes has been especially helpful in developing essay-writing skills.

The course also does an excellent job of introducing debate and complexity rather than presenting art history as a fixed narrative. Discussions of issues such as the hierarchy of genres, the role of the art market, and the challenges faced by women artists have added important critical perspectives.

Overall, the course has significantly deepened my understanding and appreciation of European art history and has encouraged more confident analytical thinking about artworks and their contexts.

Great course with a wide range of fascinating artists to learn about...

I enjoy the wide range of subject content. I am learning even more about all of the famous artists from throughout the ages as well as discovering unknown artists who are just as fascinating.
When I get the opportunity to visit exhibitions I feel as if I can do more than just simply look at a piece of artwork, I see much more now...

A brilliant course. Covers not just art but covers a lot of social history. The course materials are high quality, well written and easy to follow. It's a challenging course, in a good way. I highly recommend this course

I had always wanted to broaden and deepen my knowledge of art history. After extensive research, I chose this course based on its content description, length, and flexibility. I also appreciated that, to progress, assignments had to be completed.
As I worked through the course, I became increasingly convinced that I had made the right choice. There were some very good modules and some excellent ones, but overall, the structure was perfect for me, exactly as I had hoped.

What surprised me was how much it would stimulate my interest in art. I now visit museums and exhibitions with a completely new perspective and renewed enthusiasm.
I also had a very positive experience with my tutor, Libby. I particularly appreciated having the same tutor throughout the course. She provided insightful, constructive, and highly relevant feedback.

Excellent Course

I have enjoyed the academic rigor of the course and the coursework. The readings are interesting in their own right, and the assignments give depth and understanding to the concepts and eras being discussed. The feedback from my tutor has been invaluable, pushing me further and helping me understand the topic. I appreciate all the additional resources that are listed in each module.

What would have made this better would have been videos or links to videos to support the material being studied.

Happy to be back after a long absence

After a hiatus of about 9 years due to a change in circumstances (we relocated to the UK!), I decided to resume my studies.
I've just submitted my 5th assignment.
I contacted the South African branch, who arranged an extension for me.
In the years after I abandoned my studies the course was redesigned, with an advanced module added to my original course.
I am really glad I resumed my studies. The content is interesting, compelling and enriching. What I am learning is helping me get more out of visits to galleries and art museums. I'm so fortunate that there are plenty within easy reach of my home in the London commuter belt.
Though the material is good, I'm using additional resources to supplement it. I find the assignments challenging (in a good way) and enjoy applying my mind to the task of compressing a lot of information into an accurate 250-word response.
I'm delighted with how quickly my tutor marks my assignments and provides valuable feedback. I can easily reach him via the message function and get prompt responses.

Hi Cecilia,

Welcome back – and wow, after nine years! That’s such a brilliant achievement. Relocating to the UK and then picking your studies back up again takes real determination, so we’re genuinely impressed.

We’re so pleased our team could help arrange your extension and make the transition back into the course smooth for you. It’s also lovely to hear that you’re enjoying the updated modules and finding the content enriching. There’s something really special about studying art while having incredible galleries and museums right on your doorstep in the London commuter belt – it must make everything feel even more alive and relevant.

We love that you’re challenging yourself with the 250-word assignments and digging into additional resources. That kind of engagement is exactly what helps the learning stick and deepen.

And of course, we’re thrilled to hear your tutor’s feedback has been prompt and valuable. That ongoing dialogue and support can make all the difference.

Thank you for sharing your journey with us – we’re so glad you’re back and thriving!
