First‑year service significantly overcharged compared to Yamaha norms
I booked my Yamaha 90HP outboard (7 hours total run time, trailer‑stored) for its first‑year service. I was surprised to receive a $594 bill, including 3 hours of labour and a full water pump impeller replacement.
After checking Yamaha’s own service schedule and speaking with other Yamaha dealers, the first‑year service normally involves inspection, oil, and gear lube only, and typically costs $280–$480. Impeller replacement is not part of the first‑year service unless there is visible damage or a cooling issue.
My engine had no symptoms, and no damaged parts were shown to me. Labour was billed at 3 hours, which is well above Yamaha’s flat‑rate guidelines for this job.
I’m sharing this so other boat owners can make informed decisions and ask for clarity before work is carried out. I hope the dealership reviews their processes so future customers receive clearer communication and industry‑standard pricing.
