Back in October I pre-ordered a bottle…

Back in October I pre-ordered a bottle of Teeling whisky at Dublin airport as they offered a free gift, otherwise I would have bought a different brand. They were out of the free gift and I messaged Teeling (from their website) that day to explain the situation. There was no response. When we returned to Dublin, the same free gift was still on offer so I messaged Teeling again and still no response and not even any sort of acknowledgement. I would not recommend that one should not expect to receive the free gift that is offered as they will not have any in stock and their customer service is non existent!

Tour is a waste of money

Bottom line first, if you are expecting a good tour with the ability to sample and enjoy Teeling's whiskeys at the end, you are taking a real risk on this one. My experience is that it was a complete waste of my money. I would 100% not recommend this tour. Go see the Guinness Storehouse, go see the Jameson distillery - go visit any other brewer or distiller in Ireland before you visit this place. If you are excited about actually tasting Teeling's whiskeys, you probably want to reconsider and do something else with your time and money. Of every type of tasting event I have been to in my 53 years on this planet, this was, by far, was the worst experience.

Teeling has a tiered pricing level for the tour - 20 euros for two tastings, 30 euros for three tastings, and 35 euros for four tastings. Since I enjoy all types of whiskey/whisky, I went for the four tastings. Of the group of 20 people that were on my tour, I was one of four people who paid for the four tastings.

The tour part of the experience was decent. The young man leading the tour was nice, and did an OK enough job leading the tour. The tour is short and lasts about 30 minutes. It gives a broad overview of the history of Irish whiskey making in Dublin and Teeling's distilling process.

But you're not paying 35 euros for a 30 minute tour. The big part of the tour, the tasting, which our guide kept hyping time and again throughout, was absolute crap and not worth the price of admission.

Two of my four pours were barely, I mean BARELY, even a sip. I would estimate they were about a 1/4 ounce - a freaking tablespoon. I'm not exaggerating. The other 2 were maybe 1/2 ounce. Not a single pour of the four whiskeys I was given to taste even came close to enough to be able to appreciate any of the notes/flavors in the whiskey.

So, while the tour guide, who again continually hyped the tasting throughout our 30 minute tour, is getting excited talking about the whiskey being presented, I'm looking at my four glasses, wondering where the actual whiskey is...The pours I was given were so overtly bad that my wife, who was standing 15-20 feet away from the barrel where we were having our tasting, approached me and pointed out how small they were - and that I didn't get the same size pours as everyone else.

I will reiterate - and I am not exaggerating when I say two of my four tasting pours were maybe, MAYBE, 1/4 of an ounce. The other two were closer to 1/2 of an ounce. Complete garbage.

As a customer and a foreigner in a foreign land, I was in a really uncomfortable position. I couldn't be the American jerk and stop the guide's presentation and tasting by asking in front of everyone why my pours were so tiny. I should have never been put in that situation.

After the tasting, I approached our tour guide to relay my disappointment. I was very polite, not confrontational in the least, and simply said to him that I was disappointed that whoever was doing the pours didn't even make the slightest of efforts of make sure everyone got what they paid for, a nice pour to sample the whiskey. It really ruined the entire experience. Nice as he was, the response from my tour guide was crickets. He literally just looked at me like a deer in headlights and said nothing. So I walked off.

I live in a resort community where we interact with guests all the time and the fact that the tour guide didn't even know how to offer the simplest of apologies for my bad experience speaks volumes about this distillery.

The irony is that not a single other person from my tour group went to the gift shop and bought anything. I bought a 75 euro bottle of the cask strength Blackpitts. I'll enjoy it with my family and a friend or two when I get home, and I willl never buy another bottle of Teeling whiskey based upon this experience.

I would never recommend to anyone that they go on this tour. Go to the pub, drop 35 euros on four of Teeling's whiskeys and sample them for yourself. No 30 minute tour and underwhelming tasting needed.

Great tour and experience

Alexandra our tour guide was fantastic. She was very informative and passionate about the story and making of Teeling Whiskey and happy to answer any questions. The tasting was delicious especially the cocktail! Would definitely recommend if you’re interested in how it’s all made.
