A safari trip one must do at some point…
A safari trip one must do at some point in life,
The planning
We were a group of 27 people ( 9 children) who booked a Safari trip to Tanzania. This trip has been planned for 1,5 years and Jakob did a great job to accommodate all of our wishes making it a tailor-made trip with unforgettable memories.
The journey
Our journey started with a flight to Arusha where we had our first pitstop to rest before starting our Safari trip the following day. We were greeted by 5 professional Safari drivers equipped with modern Landcruisers and lots of smiles.
The trip continued to the Tarangire park where we were able to see plenty of Elephants and Giraffes. The elephants got very close, one might think too close, but our Safari guides kept a cool head and knew how to behave to ensure we were safe and yet super close. The day ended at the Tarangire Lodge Safari, which has probably one of the most stunning landscape views we have ever seen. A view over a few hills, lots of trees and trespassing animal. One would think of being in a cinema watching discovery channel. Magical!
The tents were decent, and the food was good too, but it is the view that makes this place special. Beware at night, animals come close to the tents and leaving it at night is not recommended. Children must be watched at all times, but this should be common sense.
The trip then continued to the Serengeti, which in my opinion is where the real Safari started. Driving for hours and hours to get to the next camp literally in the middle of nowhere. Unlike my experience in South Africa, which seems a bit fake with those private game reserves, Tanzania is just another world. Yes, you need to be lucky to see them all but we were blessed this trip and we got to see them all! Leopards, Cheetahs, Lion (including cubs!), Giraffes…you name it.
The drivers were not only skilled drivers but also understood the animals very well. The Safari operators in the area also cooperate to help each other in spotting animals, a very nice touch. No use of GPS or any other helping devices, pure experience!
Our next camp was in the middle of nowhere, with at least 4 hours away from any civilization/city life. Only animals, real close. More authenticity is not possible. We expected the worst with the next tents, but we were blown away. Huge tents, clean and with normal toilets and showers. The food was great too and the staff was kind enough to make children friendly dishes too.
Since it has rained for weeks prior to our arrival, the grass was a bit high making it a little tricky to keep an eye for the animals nearby. Nevertheless, we did not expect so much luxury in the middle of nowhere and the animals we got to see here primarily cheetah’s, lions, giraffes and elephants. Since it was migration time, we even got to see wilder beast’s giving birth at several occasions, hunting Hyenas and thousands of Zebras surrounding us constantly. Our highlight was to see Lion cubs. There is no zoo or documentary ever going to bring this experience to your eyesight. Simply amazing to experience the animals this close.
Our last stop was the Ngorongoro crater. Great hotel with another stunning view over the crater. We were lucky to have blue sky the next morning because you will only then understand the magic about this place – the spectacular views!
During the safari inside the crater we were lucky to finally see a Rhino! With that, we have now seen all the animals one person has to see.
Our trip then ended near a Coffee Farm with a fantastic swimming pool and great food.
Zanzibar
The flight to Zanzibar was short. We stayed at Royal Zanzibar. This hotel has two very special benefits: Fantastic food and an amazing beach. Here you get the Bahamas feeling you are looking for. Turquoise water and white beach sand is the perfect reward after 8 days safari.
The verdict
Overall, this has been the most amazing family trip we have had, despite being 27 people! Well organized, thought through and execution at its best. A big thanks to Tanzania Tours for making this an unforgettable experience. We can only recommend it, also with kids.
A big thank you to our driver “Fadhsili”. He was not only very good at explaining the animals, he also did an effort to seek the perfect spot for me so I could get good photo spot. Getting close to the animals without spoiling the moment for us or the animal. A man that knows what he is doing. Thanks to him we had an exciting, safe and eventful trip.
