Tailo is an AI-powered academic reading and research tool developed to support disabled and neurodivergent university students. Built for the way students really study, Tailo uses AI to break down complex academic texts, surface the key ideas, and turn dense papers into something you can genuinely engage with. Whether you're juggling a reading list that never seems to shrink, managing a learning difference, or just trying to keep up with a heavy workload, Tailo is designed to make academic life a little more manageable. Used by students across the world, Tailo works alongside the tools and resources you already use - including as DSA-funded assistive technology. We're a small team that genuinely cares about the students we build for. Every piece of feedback helps us make Tailo better, and we read every review.

Rated 2 out of 5 stars

Doesn't read the main body of the text out loud, only the AI summary.

I've been struggling with this app for a while now. It will only read the AI summary and (occasionally) the abstract of a text. It will not read out the rest of your peer-reviewed papers, which you need to write your academic paper. I have contacted the company, which informed me that they had "fixed" the problem and that the AI summary could now be read aloud (it had always been able to do so; therefore, no fix was actioned), but still provided no information about the app not reading the main text. I have emailed again, but did not get a response. Visually, it is user-friendly (hence the 2 stars) and there is a selection of voices, but the app isn't able to remember the voice settings, so you have to reset them every time you want to read a document. If it read the main body of the text, and didn't need to keep resetting the voice, I would 100% recommend this. Since it doesn't, I can't recommend it at all. Don't be duped by the DSA-approved. It probably just means it was the cheapest. As someone with dyslexia, I am so disappointed. I'm considering returning to clunky old Claroread.

Thank you for this - and we're sorry it took us so long to respond properly.

Your feedback was fair, and you were right. The issues you described were real, and our support at the time didn't give you the answers you needed. We're sorry about that.

We want you to know that since your review, we've rebuilt our Text-to-Speech system from the ground up. Full body text now reads aloud reliably, voice settings are saved between sessions so you're not resetting every time, and we've introduced higher quality voices alongside faster generation overall - the core things you flagged.

We know that doesn't undo a frustrating experience, especially as someone with dyslexia relying on this for your studies. But if you're open to giving Tailo another look, we'd genuinely love the chance to show you how much has changed. Reach out to us at hello@tailo.app and we'll make sure you're properly set up.

Thank you again for taking the time to write such honest feedback. It directly shaped what we built next.
