Open food and horrible return policy

Ordered dry dog kibble that is not carried in their stores. It arrived quickly, but upon opening it, there was kibble in the box along with some sort of 'droppings'. My dog wasn't even interested in inspecting the box as he normally does. Found a hole in the bag under the upper corner flaps where one might lift it from. Tried to get a refund, but they make you jump through hoops to get it. First I could either pay $6 to ship it back or drop it off in the store. I chose to drop it off as it is easier. Problem is, they make you do everything to make your life more difficult. First, you have to wait a few days for them to get back to you. Now you have to take at least 10 different photos and send the pics to them, then wait again. If you take too long, they close the case and make you reopen it again, starting at the bottom of the pile. They don't feel like getting back to me on this issue, but I bet USAA will help me!

Hands down the worst...

The Riverdale Petco is hands down the worst Petco location I’ve ever dealt with. The Riverdale store seems completely dysfunctional. In the last 90 days alone they’ve gone through three managers, which should tell you everything you need to know about how that place is being run.

The current manager told me his name was Mark, and his response to a basic customer service issue was dismissive and unhelpful from the start. I pay a monthly fee for one of their rewards programs, yet this store repeatedly refuses to honor the benefits. Instead of resolving the issue, they argue with customers about their own program. It’s frustrating and frankly embarrassing for a national chain.

I attempted to escalate the situation and left a message for Dustin, the regional manager. Not surprisingly, he never bothered to return my call. That lack of accountability seems to trickle down through the entire store.

What’s even more telling is that the experience at the Harrisville location is the complete opposite. Their staff is polite, professional, and actually tries to help. The manager there clearly trusts their employees and empowers them to make decisions that improve the customer experience instead of hiding behind excuses.

If you’re considering the Riverdale store, save yourself the headache and drive to Harrisville instead. The difference in leadership, professionalism, and basic respect for customers is night and day.

: Dangerous Defective Outdoor Cat House, Overcharged, Injured Customer, Zero Accountability $180 scam

: Dangerous Defective Outdoor Cat House, Overcharged, Injured Customer, Zero Accountability $180 scam

I am writing this review to warn others about Petco.

I purchased an insulated outdoor cat house from Petco for an outdoor cat. Not only was I overcharged by $45, but the product I received was completely defective and unsafe. The house arrived with sharp, jagged metal or plastic edges, to the point that I severely injured my hands while handling it. This is not a minor defect, it is a serious safety hazard.

My cat will not go anywhere near this house. An animal instinctively avoids danger, and this product clearly signals danger. An outdoor insulated shelter is supposed to provide warmth and protection. Instead, this one poses a risk of injury to animals and humans alike.

I immediately contacted Petco and provided all requested documentation, including purchase date, delivery date, photographs, and proof of the defect. I contacted corporate three separate times. Each time I was told someone would call me back. No one ever did.

Even worse, Petco attempted to shift responsibility to the manufacturer, telling me to contact them directly. That is unacceptable. I did not purchase this item from the manufacturer. Petco sold it, Petco charged me, Petco delivered it, and Petco profited from it. Responsibility does not disappear when a product is defective and dangerous.

This experience demonstrates a complete disregard for animal safety and customer well-being. Selling a hazardous product intended for animals, overcharging the customer, injuring the customer, and then refusing to take responsibility is beyond unacceptable.

I am posting this publicly so other pet owners are warned. If you care about your animals and your own safety, do not purchase from Petco.

If you want a company that stands behind what they sell and actually cares about customers and animals, purchase from Chewy instead. Their customer service and accountability are incomparable.

Warning to Pet Owners: Avoid Edgewood Petco Grooming Salon

Since Renique’s departure, the quality of care at this location has plummeted. Renique, the former salon manager, ran the salon with professionalism, patience, and genuine care. Now, the atmosphere is chaotic and concerning.

My dog, Prince — an exclusive client of Renique for many years, calm and well-behaved — was labeled “overly sensitive,” denied grooming services, blacklisted, and blocked from booking online. This seems to be done out of spite, as Prince never had issues under Renique’s care.

These actions are alarming and unacceptable, raising serious questions about how animals are treated here. We are following Renique to her new workplace, no matter how far, because she treats pets with the respect, patience, and kindness they deserve. 🐾

Wonderful staff

I was at the Petco in Fort Myers Florida this afternoon and had the most wonderful sales person! Her name is Dea and she helped with my purchase and offered suggestions for the best color -and even helped me decide on an engraved name tag. I needed to purchase a collar for a stuffed animal "Capybara" I knitted for my granddaughter. Dea was so friendly, knowledgeable and helpful - made my experience a 5-star!!!

Petco Grooming Damaged my Dog

I have used Petco for grooming services for some time, but first time in this Chicago location. First for my Bedlington Terrier "Mr. Pibb", and now for a new Bedlington Terrier, "Ferris Bueller". Both have been trained as Service Dogs. They check my blood-sugar level by smell - I am diabetic.

Ferris was booked into this location at 613 W. Roosevelt Road, Chicago on July 9, 2025. There was some delay in staff arriving at this location at the booked time of 8:00am, but someone finally arrived and took my dog. He was returned to me at about 11:30am. He looked fine.

Subsequently, he has developed a large patch of black hair on what is a light gray to white dog. This was due to some kind of injury being done to him during the grooming session at your facility that damaged the hair in these locations. Perhaps a burn. The abrupt change in color is a known result of skin injury, often during grooming by a careless or inexperienced groomer. This is well-documented including by the AKC.

I've also attached a photo showing the injury area. I've owned a Bedlington Terrier for over 16 years and this is the first experience of groomer injury to my dogs.

I'm hopeful that there isn't any longterm damage to Ferris Bueller from this grooming. The worst part? Reports directly to Petco are ignored by management.

HORRIBLE Customer Service

If I could give them negative five stars, I would — and I’d throw in a sad trombone sound for good measure.

I just spent 20 minutes on the phone (including being put on hold three times — a personal best!) with someone who sounded like they were calling me from the middle of a very busy chicken coop. Between the background chaos and the thick accent, I caught about every third word — and I’m pretty sure one of them was “sorry,” but who knows?

All I wanted was to reset my password. Simple, right? I gave them the exact email address they use to send me my monthly statements (you know, proof I exist), plus the account number from that very statement — which, by the way, arrived today. Their response? “We can’t find an account with that email.”

So after 20 minutes of elevator music, confusion, and me slowly aging, their big solution? “Just open a new account!” Oh sure — and maybe I’ll adopt a new pet while I’m at it just to make the experience complete.

When I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was told, “No supervisors are available.” Naturally. Probably off somewhere avoiding calls like mine. And there was no post-call survey either, which is hilarious because you know they’d rather wrestle a raccoon than let people rate this circus.

To whoever’s in charge of Customer Service — I hope you’re at least pretending to care, because from the outside, it sure looks like no one does.

But hey, the good news? There are plenty of other places to buy pet food. Ones where I don’t have to solve a riddle, wait on hold, and question my life choices just to reset a password.

Nasty stuff, filthy store

The store is filthy, the inventory is limited and the staff and management are nasty. You’ll see a new person there every other week.

They sell diseased fish. You can just look at the aquariums and see why.

I highly suggest Benson’s or Petco in Pittsfield

It didn't have a good experience…

It didn't have a good experience purchasing at Petco. Available employee were too busy doing nothing instead help me and my daughter with her questions and whatever it was necessary for the pet. It was her birthday, I though at least some employee would be helpful to assist us during the purchase. Decided to not purchase anything there at the time - and never. The experience was not good, decided to make my purchase some elsewhere.

Solid Store

I've been a long time customer at Petco, Their staff is a bit undertrained in my opinion, please research what your pets needs before buying them at Petco, but they are incredibly friendly and do try their best. The dog toys are averagely durable, unlike some online alternatives, the vet spots are good to.
