A Tourist's Nightmare of Hidden Fees
My experience with StadtRAD Hamburg (Deutsche Bahn Connect GmbH) has been incredibly frustrating. As a tourist who used their bike service for a single, one-off ride, I was shocked to receive an invoice for an annual fee a year later without advance notice to cancel or opt-out. It became clear they had enrolled me in an automatic subscription without my informed consent.
What followed was a protracted and unhelpful customer service ordeal. Despite my repeated explanations that I was a tourist and never intended to sign up for an annual service, StadtRAD Hamburg consistently hid behind their terms and conditions, refusing to cancel the charge. Their responses were cold and dismissive, prioritizing strict adherence to their small print over common sense or customer fairness.
The process of resolving this minor €5 charge was unnecessarily difficult. They couldn't even collect the payment from my updated card on file, forcing me to make an annoying direct bank transfer. It took multiple emails and persistent follow-ups on my part just to get them to confirm the payment was received and that my "contract" would finally be terminated.
This entire situation felt like a deceptive practice aimed at trapping unsuspecting tourists into recurring fees. There was a complete lack of empathy or willingness to find a reasonable solution. I ultimately paid the disputed amount under protest just to put an end to days of persistent and unjustified harassment.
I strongly advise anyone visiting Hamburg to avoid StadtRAD Hamburg. Their practices are deceptive, and their customer service is combative. You'll likely save yourself a lot of headaches by choosing a different bike rental service.
