Mixed results.

Generally, the SpotOn GPS fence works well, but it's not consistent. Here's the problems I've had: Occasionally, the location data is off by 10, 20 or more feet. This morning, it was off by about 100 feet and showed my dog's location to be in the road in front of my house when she was clearly not close to the road. Even after I shut the collar down & rebooted it was showing her in the road. The battery life can barely get through the day now even though I bought an extended life battery. To be fair, it is 15 months old. The shock feature is much too powerful. When I first set it up I started at a low setting around 4. When that didn't work, I put it at just below 50%. Not long after I found two open wounds on her neck where the collar points burned her. I've put it back to 4. The good thing about the SpotOn system is that the fence boundaries are easy to set up. And it is an effective system to keep your dog on your property.

Hello Douglas,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for highlighting how easy SpotOn makes it to create custom fence boundaries. We're glad to hear the system has been effective at keeping your dog safely on your property, but we're sorry to hear you've experienced inconsistencies with GPS accuracy and battery performance.

While the location shown in the app can occasionally vary due to environmental conditions, the collar itself is continuously calculating its position to maintain containment. If you're seeing frequent or significant location discrepancies, we'd love the opportunity to review your collar's GPS logs to determine what may be contributing to that behavior.

We'd also be happy to evaluate your battery performance. Although battery capacity naturally decreases over time, a 15-month-old collar should still provide dependable runtime, and our team can help determine whether what you're experiencing is expected.

We also wanted to address the skin irritation you mentioned. The collar's contact points are incapable of generating enough heat to cause a burn. In situations like this, the cause is typically a pressure sore from prolonged contact or friction, or, in some cases, an allergic skin reaction. Rotating the collar position slightly each day, ensuring you can comfortably fit two fingers under the strap, and periodically removing the collar while your dog is resting can help prevent irritation.

We'd appreciate the opportunity to look into all of these concerns with you. Please reach out to us at Support@SpotOnFence.com 7 days a week or call 1-603-488-1504 M-F from 8 am to 5 pm ET and on Saturdays from 8 am to 12 pm ET so we can review your collar's logs and help ensure it's performing as intended.

Amazing Concept, But It Wasn’t Reliable for Our Rural Property

We really wanted the SpotOn Fence to be the solution for keeping our ACD safely on our property. When the collar was working, the training experience was actually very positive. Our dog learned the boundaries quickly, and we were excited because it seemed like it was going to work.

Unfortunately, the biggest issue was consistency. We live in a very rural, heavily wooded area with little to no cell service. We purchased the SpotOn based on reviews and videos claiming it performs well in dense tree cover and remote locations. That simply wasn’t our experience.

The collar’s satellite connection was unpredictable. The app would often indicate we had a good GPS connection, but the collar itself would randomly fail to activate or lose connection. There was no pattern or explanation for when it would work and when it wouldn’t. We worked with customer support, who were helpful, and even exchanged the collar for a second one, but we experienced the same issues with both.

I really wish this had worked for our family because the concept is fantastic, and when it functioned properly, it did exactly what we hoped. Unfortunately, it wasn’t reliable enough for us to trust with our dog’s safety, so we ultimately returned it.

At the end of the day, we’ll probably have to install a tie-out or cable run and significantly reduce the area our pup is able to explore. I genuinely hope SpotOn continues improving the technology, because for families in situations like ours, it has the potential to be an amazing product.

Thank you, Sandy, for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review. We're truly sorry SpotOn didn't provide the consistent experience you expected, especially after working with our support team and trying a replacement collar.

We'd like to clarify that SpotOn's containment system does not rely on cellular service. The collar uses GPS/GNSS satellites to create and enforce the fence, while cellular connectivity is only used for optional features like live tracking and notifications in the app. Many customers successfully use SpotOn in rural and wooded areas, although factors such as dense canopy, terrain, and the surrounding environment can sometimes affect GPS performance differently from one property to another.

While we're glad to hear your dog learned the boundaries quickly and that our support team was helpful, we're disappointed we weren't able to resolve the issue on your property. Feedback like yours is incredibly valuable as we continue refining both our hardware and software to improve performance in challenging environments.

We sincerely appreciate that you gave SpotOn a fair opportunity, and we wish you and your dog all the best. Thank you again for sharing your experience and your thoughtful feedback.

Good and not good

I think customer service with this company is exceptional, and I appreciated that. Our problem was that our satellite signal was not good enough due to an overstory of big trees on our property, so the warnings, etc, did not work for our dog on our place. Out in the open, it might be good. The company promptly refunded when I returned it.

This is a great product with a super support team! It was super easy to set up in our wooded 6 acre lot. We tried less expensive brands with no success as we could never get consistent service due to our extremely wooded lot! Any time we have had minor issues or questions with this system, their support team is extremely proactive and consistently responds right away to ANY questions. Our dog has responded well to having this collar and stays within her boundary without enabling tracking. We love this product!

Hands down the greatest purchase for my dogs I’ve ever made in 30 years of owning dogs. The ease of setting up and using the collar combined with how effective the collars are is unbelievable. My only regret is not buying it 10 years ago!!!!

Costumer service was good

Costumer service was good. I had 2 issues and both were addressed. My first collar had a battery stop working and I got a new collar during the 60 day warranty a week later. My second collar, the charger overheated while plugged in but not charging. They offered to replace. I opted to return it and do something else. The first issue may have been partially caused by my dog as there was a slight mark on the collar but did not break the casing. Hopefully if the omni collar has a production issue they fix it. Maybe I just had bad luck. I certainly wish the company the best!

Customer service is great

Customer service is great.
Things I do not like
-GPS tracking and other features that require GPS do not consistently work. Not, sure if it is my location or product.
- Dog play together and turn off each others collars
- The durability, collars do not stand up to my dog’s playing with each other.
- Size, wish they were smaller
- Price, very expensive product and subscription.

Thank you for the review and feedback to clarify, GPS is used to contain the dog and issue corrections, and cellular is used to track and receive notifications. Cellular has no effect on containment. If you are having issues with tracking or if the collars are repeatedly turning off on their own, please reach out to us. We would love to investigate this further with you.

We purchased 2 of the spot on fence for…

We purchased 2 of the spot on fence for our two dogs. The one dog does great. She is an adult dog that was a rescue and she has shepherd hound in her and she would wander off our rural property when on the hunt for squirrels. The spot on reminds her when she hears the beeping to stay back and she respects it. The other dog we have is a border collie/ blue healer mix. He was trained the same as the other dog but, it scares him. He refused to go outside with the collar because she would go up to the boundary and he'd hear the warning and it scared him to death. He started becoming scared of anything that went beep - car seatbelt alerts, trucks backing up in the distance, the smoke alarm when the power would flicker, microwave etc. He refused to go outside with the collar on. He would growl at us when we'd try and put him outside with the spot on collar. He started to pee and poo in the house. We are not using the collar now because he is so afraid, he stays away from the boundary so in that regard it worked (for now). For this dog it was a waste of a lot of money because we can not put it on him although now, for the time being he will not test the boundary. For the other dog, it was a blessing.

I have owned and used a spot on fence…

I have owned and used a spot on fence for over 2 years.
I loved it for the first 8 months. I recommended it to all my friends and anyone that asked me about it. Then the collar became unreliable and didn't contain the dog and would track him maybe 75%of the time. Customer service was very nice to deal with even replaced the collar, but it still didn't work all the time. I live on the side of a river in a wide-open space with very few trees. If the collar can't be trusted, it's pretty useless. I keep my subscription because when he gets out, I may get lucky and be able to track him. They blame cellular service and not their collar even though the collar and my phone have at least 3 out of 4 power bars. I am putting up a board fence now. I think they came up with the name spot on because it is defiantly spotty at best

Thank you for sharing your experience. We're very sorry to hear that your confidence in SpotOn changed over time, especially after having such a positive experience during your first several months of use.

We're glad our support team had the opportunity to work with you and replace your collar, but we're disappointed to hear you're still experiencing issues. We understand how important it is to trust your dog's containment system.

We did want to clarify one point that may help others reading your review. SpotOn's optional cellular subscription is used only for features within the Tracking tab, such as your dog's live location, escape notifications, and other tracking-related updates. Both your phone and collar need a strong cellular connection to receive notifications or enable tracking. Cellular connectivity has no impact on the collar's ability to contain your dog. As long as the collar has a reliable GPS connection and an active fence loaded, it will consistently provide the warning tone, vibration (if enabled), and correction every time your dog crosses the fence boundary—even if a weak cellular connection prevents tracking updates or notifications from reaching your phone.

We'd like the opportunity to take another look at your specific setup and determine why your experience hasn't matched the performance we expect. There may be environmental or hardware factors that warrant a closer review, and we'd be happy to work through them with you. Please reach out at your earliest convenience.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your honest feedback. We hope you'll give us another opportunity to help restore your confidence in SpotOn.

SpotOn has worked perfectly for our two dogs!
We live in a mountainous, wooded area, and I was concerned about signal stability. It took about two weeks to get the fence set just the way we wanted it, the dogs used to it, and ourselves in a good routine charging the collars every night, and during that time one of our dogs escaped once. We were able to call her back through the app, and haven't had an escape since!

Prior to Spot on, I trained my Golden Retriever puppy with a training collar and he learned to respect a tone. With Spot On, I walked him around the perimeter once and that was all he needed. Now he roams three acres and I don't worry about him and our busy highway.

Beware, Your Pet is in Danger

What didn't go wrong. On hold forever trying to get thru to customer service to help with vague instructions to install was just the start.
Eventually this thing fried our dog in our living room. Was horrible.
Claims that we should have made the house a safe zone from the company, and it was our fault were a sham. Buried in the vague instruction were a "recommendation" that the house be put in a safe zone, with no reason why. We reasoned it was already part of the safe zone. They also admitted that this could happen again for all kind of reasons, trees, a thin roof, bouncing signals. etc. Not the easy and safe alternative to an electric fence that advertise. Beware, the sight of our dog laterally screaming while being shocked as we ere trying to get the collar off is still in my brain. The collar as hot to the touch once off for 10 minutes.

We're very sorry to hear about your experience and understand how upsetting this must have been for you and your family. The safety and well-being of dogs is our highest priority, and we never want any customer to have an experience like the one you've described.

SpotOn collars are designed to deliver brief, controlled static corrections only when the collar determines a dog has crossed a virtual fence boundary. Because SpotOn relies on GPS technology, satellite reception can occasionally be affected by environmental factors such as overhead cover, dense tree canopy, or certain building materials. For this reason, we recommend creating a Home Zone around your house, which disables corrections while your dog is in or around the home and helps reduce the risk of unintended corrections.

A Home Zone can be created by editing your fence in the SpotOn app, selecting Zones, then Home Zone, and following the in-app prompts to draw the area around your home. Home Zones work best when they are at least 30 feet from the fence boundary. Significant tree coverage or structures with metal or particularly thin roofs can still impact GPS performance, which is why these recommendations are included during setup.

We understand your frustration and appreciate your feedback that this guidance could have been clearer. Feedback like yours helps us continue improving our setup instructions and customer education.

We're also sorry to hear about your difficulty reaching our support team. If you're willing, we'd appreciate the opportunity to review your experience further and discuss your concerns directly. Please reach out to our technical customer support team at Support@SpotOnFence.com so we can learn more and continue improving both our product and the experience we provide to our customers.

Thank you for your review of the SpotOn collar. GPS Drift is a natural occurrence, and we observe 3-9 feet of drift.
