My first big trip abroad with Somos Travels to Peru turned out to be such a meaningful experience. Visiting Los Amigos, learning about their inspiring work, and having the opportunity to support their cause made it even more special. It was a wonderful chance to explore my grandmother's homeland while making a positive difference. We enjoyed breathtaking scenery, rich culture, tasty food, and giving back to the community, all while overcoming physical challenges. Though it was sometimes daunting to push my boundaries, Kyle’s encouragement really helped me keep going and discover what I was capable of. I returned home feeling stronger, more confident, and filled with excitement for my next adventure!

An Unforgettable Peruvian Adventure — Couldn't Recommend Somos More!

Five stars isn't enough for Somos Travel Company! From the moment our journey began to the very end, this trip was the ultimate mix of adventure, culture, hard work, and deep self-discovery.

Our tour guide, Kyle, did a fantastic job leading us. Whether we were navigating the logistics of reaching the Amazon, coordinating local details, or helping out when unexpected challenges popped up, Kyle was incredible—supportive, knowledgeable, and always there when we needed him.

The itinerary itself was a masterclass in varied experiences. We spent our first days deep in the Amazon Rainforest at the Los Amigos Biological Station, doing volunteer conservation work (yes, unrolling six-year-old tarp with venomous spiders involved!), going on intense night hikes, and visiting cutting-edge research labs. From there, we transitioned to the stunning high-altitude culture of Cusco—just in time to witness the magical Pachamama Raymi parade—explored the Sacred Valley, fed alpacas, visited ancient salt mines, and took the breathtaking train to Machu Picchu.

When my passport and wallet were stolen at Machu Picchu, it could have ruined the trip. But Edwin and Kyle stepped up immediately—helping me navigate language barriers, coordinating with police, and getting me to the consulate in Lima so I could safely get an emergency passport. What started as a scary hurdle turned into an empowering week of solo exploration in Lima, where I explored historical catacombs, wandered through Kennedy Park, and took a fantastic culinary walking tour through Barranco.

Peru has some of the best food on the planet (from fresh ceviche to anticucho and local fruit tastings), and every step of this journey felt meaningful. This trip forced me out of my comfort zone, taught me to let go of control, and gave me memories I’ll cherish forever.

From the beginning, Shad and Kyle understood what we were looking for without requiring us to provide every detail: a trip where our team could provide service to a nonprofit organization in a community that needed it while also supporting professional and personal growth for each traveler. It is important to our program that each trip pushes our people a little outside their comfort zone while leaving a positive impact on the community we are visiting. Shad and Kyle inherently understood this through Somos Impact Travel’s business mission, and our partnership became natural as we got to know each other.
Our trip to Peru was a first for both organizations. Kyle had been to Peru several times himself, so he was experienced in the country, but it was Somos Impact Travel’s first trip there as an organization, and it was our first as well.
We spent a few days in the Madre de Dios region at the Los Amigos Biological Station, providing unskilled labor to scientists researching the effects of mercury from gold mining on the environment. As a side note, the impact was far more extensive than they initially hypothesized. The accommodations, food, and off-time adventures built into the schedule were fantastic.
After that, we headed to Cusco. We spent time exploring the city and then went to Machu Picchu, where we took two trails. Most guides only provide one. Half of our group went on to summit Huayna Picchu, while the rest of us explored the area we were already in and learned more about the history. Somos was accommodating to varying fitness and skill levels.
While at Machu Picchu, one person in our group lost their passport. This was a stressful situation for everyone, but Kyle handled it with grace. We were able to get that traveler on a flight to Lima the next day for an emergency passport. We also had a traveler who needed medical assistance, which Kyle was able to coordinate.
After Cusco, we headed to a smaller village where we were able to provide more service to the town community center. We spent two days painting the building’s interior and exterior while working side by side with residents. We also visited natural hot springs and stayed at what might be considered a bed-and-breakfast in the United States, where we enjoyed home-cooked meals from the owner, who had once been a chef to the U.S. Embassy many years ago.
There is so much more I could write about the amazing experience our group had, but I do not think I have enough room. This was my company’s fourth international trip providing service to a community using different providers, and I can attest to Somos Impact Travel’s skill, flexibility, and knowledge as one of the absolute best. Kyle is the greatest guide. I honestly can’t say enough good things about Kyle. He was an incredible guide from start to finish during our trip through Peru. His Spanish is completely fluent, which made everything so much easier, especially when dealing with locals and navigating different areas.
Kyle has an amazing attitude and an upbeat personality that made every day more enjoyable. He was always professional, knowledgeable, patient, and willing to go the extra mile to make sure we had a great experience. You could tell he genuinely cared about us having a memorable trip and not just about doing his job.
He guided us through some absolutely incredible places, from the Amazon rainforest to the Andes Mountains, Machu Picchu, and Cuzco. Every place was an experience in itself, but having Kyle there made it even better. He knew the history, culture, and little details that you probably wouldn't get on your own.
What really stood out to me was how easy Kyle was to get along with. After spending so much time together, he felt less like a guide and more like a friend who happened to know Peru better than anyone.
If you're planning a trip to Peru, I highly recommend asking for Kyle and his company to take you. Whether you're heading into the Amazon rainforest, exploring the Andes, visiting Machu Picchu, or spending time in Cuzco, he will make the experience that much better. Absolutely one of the best guides I've ever had.

Kyle, Shad, and Colleen never fail to amaze as the most competent team for creating and executing a trip like this. This was their first time leading a trip to Peru and they were extremely well prepared and handled every unpredictable situation in stride and with experience. One of our travelers required medical assistance which was handled immediately and expertly. Another traveler lost a passport in machu pichu which could have been completely disastrous. Kyle worked tirelessly to get that person to the embassy to get an emergency passport. The effort and experience that comes with Somos Impact Travel is incomparable and absolutely worth every penny.
