There were times when i had uploaded an…
There were times when i had uploaded an excel spreadsheet to work on and saved it several times, but it never saved to the desktop folder and had to recreate the work. This happened on multiple occassions. But overall, the filing system is still very good.
Also, when giving rights to clients, once i have indicated the sub folders should be accessible by client, the system did not allow access to sub or sub-sub folders and i had to go in to the furtherest sub folder and provide access to client.
My firm is very happy with SmartVault.

Time to Receive Tech Support
In my experience, The time to speak with a technician when a technical issue occurs with SmartVault could be improved. Generally, it takes several hours for tech support to return email. Usually, when the call or email is sent I am off to the next project and phone or email tag further complicates the problem..
If a tech support could address my issue at the time of request, it would be extremely helpful.

Overall I love SmartVault
Overall I love SmartVault, but my scanner won't save directly to it (probably scanner issue) and I can't (easily) make changes to names of folders that I want to add/alter. (operator error?). I have found that recent updates have been GREAT! and the more experience I get the better the software becomes. Love the "print" feature from Pro-Series tax software direct to SmartVault, so easy. I do find that my clients with little computer experience have difficulty accessing the software, others no issues at all.

Attended a couple of recent online trainings, too fast (presenter barely took a breath), too high level, zero questions at the end, those were disappointing, but I do know that I can follow up with representative when I get time.
I find that some of the functionality…
I find that some of the functionality that should be easy to implement is just not there. For example, I want a dump of upload data for the time frame I indicate. I don't want all activity and I don't want it in an email. Also, clients should be able to get the emails we want them to receive. For example, when they upload documents they should receive an email confirmin.
Secure and Reliable platform, has room for continued improvement
I've used SmartVault for about 8 years now. I rely on it's security and simplicity for clients to upload sensitive information, and as a long term storage facility for all of my tax and financial planning work. As a result, I have a mobile office setup with no filing cabinets of client documents.
SV has made many upgrades to their interface and functionality in the last couple of years. Their implementation isn't always perfectly smooth - I've had some issues with certain features. Their people are mostly very helpful and prompt, but not always. Lastly, the mobile app is very useful, but again could be a little more user friendly. These are the reasons for 4 rather than 5 stars.

Smart but glitchy and problematic
The concept is a great one - cloud storage that can be accessed anywhere by both employees and clients alike that seamlessly integrates with Lacerte and other accounting software. Unfortunately, there are so many headaches that are impossible to ignore.
- The myriad of features are extremely complex to implement properly. If you have a medium sized firm, a lot of the widgets that seem nifty require a ridiculous amount of man-hours to implement, not to mention keep updated.
- Within the first year of using their product they cancelled our "tier" of service, bumped us up one which increased our price by over 40%. The added features were not worth it.
- We ran into a problem accessing a client's file. After contacting tech support many many many times, their solution was to empty the clients data completely. Everything we had for that client was erased, including efile forms. All lost. To be fair, it technically worked, in the same way that burning down your house would technically clean your room.
- I've seen serious issues with excel compatibility. Several complex schedules ended up getting corrupted and I can't pinpoint why. I no longer trust SV with this, so I keep local copies of all these files - which kind of defeats the purpose.
- The front end for clients has been met with mixed reviews - tech savvy clients obviously tend to do better, but even they find the layout confusing. We do have a handful of clients with multiple entities that love it since all their data is kept under one login.
These are just examples, but there are more. In the end, I'd say the program is 10 years away from truly being viable. I regret purchasing it.
