Good course some issues

This course fills a gap for me, in a time I can complete. I'm so glad for this option. The first unit with Justin was great, way he teaches and he answers emails really fast. Second unit with omar not so great. They have pulled the assignment briefs so now only get them on second lesson so less time to complete. Also omar missed first lesson and no reason why. Wont answer email to give tutor support. I need clarification on assignment brief and xant get it. Not ideal and did pay to be taught some not just self learn. I really hope things turn around because this is a great way to learn just need to change a few things.

Have another 6 units so will update as things progress.

Having emails answered quickly which is nice. Getting feedback which I need. I have 3 days left and my assignment is good just citations are wrong so omar has arranged a 1 on 1 session so I can finish and pass assignment. I feel that Im getting the help I need now and am happy with unit. Its good to see things improving so fast.

Update 20/2/23
Self teaching seems easier than the lessons. You get 3 lessons but not much information to help. They say marking in 30days but mine and others are pasted 30days no grade yet.

Update 9/6/23
Changing things and making it harder to learn. Normally have 2 weeks between lessons so we can study and ask questions. This unit it's 1 week so may miss stuff. Only get 3 lessons per unit any way. Unit takes 45 day so having alot after 3 lessons with no direction.

Customer service says no issue and should be fine. I ask maybe change times or get brief earlier but its no and they think no issue. It's a hard unit and this is messed up to give less help.

11/06/23
Omar got us to download revit and gave us a quick run through. This has made this unit a bit easier even tho the lesson timing sucks. Having a teacher with real world experience of designing helps.

A disappointing onboarding experience that went on…

A disappointing onboarding experience which should have been a warning, constant chasing and little updates.

Emails not replied to, rude individuals on the phone, the learner had no direction, no contact and the first group call the learner was invited to was with other learners at all different stages of their learning which isn't appropriate when you've just started your apprenticeship.

Besides the tutor being unprofessional and unapproachable during delivery, they confirmed marking is behind and not up to standard etc

CEO responded to email to say they would look in to complaint, weeks later, still no reply. Learner pulled from programme and moved on to a provider who wants to nurture and grow our future generation.

Disappointing for what should be a positive, learning experience.

Hi Urchy,

Thank you for leaving a review. We value all feedback we receive and use it to improve our service.

We’re sorry to hear that you feel that your experience with us was disappointing. We endeavour to ensure that the onboarding process runs smoothly and efficiently to make sure that learners can get onto the course swiftly and easily.

Unlike many educational institutions, Skills4Stem is not restricted to term-times so we are able to offer a flexible roll on, roll off pattern, which allows candidates to enrol on to one of our courses at any given time. However this does mean that in some cohorts there are candidates who are at different stages of their learning. Our sincerest apologies as this information may not have been clearly communicated.

Concerning assignments, Skills4Stem uses independent markers and we operate a time bound marking and feedback process. At peak times this may affect grading turnaround times but we monitor this on a weekly basis to ensure this is minimsed. The marking standard throughout the organisation is very high and this is standardised through a robust quality assurance process. However, if you still have your concerns relating to one or more of your assignments, we can send this across for a further review so please do let us know if this would be helpful.

Please do get in contact with our Client Services Team at customerservices@skils4stem.co.uk should you wish to discuss the issues you have raised in further detail and we will be very happy to assist you.

Once again, we would like to extend our apologies and hope that this does not deter you from taking a course with us again in the future.

Kind Regards,

Completely hopeless in every regard!

Scheduling has been all over the entire length of the course. Whoever does the timetables is apparently incapable of understanding the concept of bank holidays, or else they don't care. Our online lessons were on a monday and this meant we were constantly being put behind schedule (it took them over a year to issue a timetable that took into account bank holidays). This resulted in them issuing assignments before we'd received any lessons on the subject, making the subsequent lessons redundant because we'd already had to self teach the content to do the assignment. The timetables were also issued in a haphazard manner, sometimes as a table and sometimes as outlook calendar invites which caused a lot of confusion.

The lessons themselves were good initially (when delivered by Chris Mitchell). He always made them interesting setting individual and group tasks and avoided simply reading slides to us.

Chris then left (I can see why) and since then we have had 4 different tutors all of whom have been poor and often had no idea what they were supposed to be teaching when the lesson started. Since Chris left, most of the lessons have consisted of the tutor slowly reading slides to us (ofsted would have a field day).

Tutors also don't reply to emails for weeks and when they do it's rarely helpful. The current trend is to apologize for the delay, promise to send the requested info shortly, and then never send the follow up email.

Customer service are pointless too. Don't seem to ever achieve anything other than apologize.

Additionally assignments are consistently late back. I don't think there's been an assignment where one of the people in my group hasn't had their assignment handed back after the 30 day period they're supposed to return them in.

Assignments are also poorly written with briefs that don't meet the success criteria and success criteria with requirements that just aren't correct english.

In summary I would strongly recommend you find a different provider.

Great Tutor, Great CEO

I have been studying with Skills4Stem via an Apprenticeship, doing the level 4 and level 5 NVQ Diplomas in Construction Management.

I have at times struggled with the assignments and fallen behind, I have to praise my tutor Patrick Edwards who persisted and challenged me, ensuring I passed my assignments, I have definitely evolve as a person during my time studying here.

Would also like to thank Sarah Davis, Who also didn't give up on me, given me help when needed. The Pandemic was a difficult time for different companies for staff, pressure, deadlines etc. but can say I felt Skills4Stem always gave me 200% when needed.

I would recommend them, it's a good course to study remotely while working, you have quite a bit of time per assignment too.

Poor tuition and service

Poor tuition, terribly written assignment briefs, inconsistent service.

I and my cohort have had a number of issues with this course. It was ok last year when we had Chris Mitchell as a tutor but the new tutors aren't very good at all. They have given confused and jumbled up instruction making completing assignments very hard to do. The assignments themselves are hard to decipher with disjointed briefs that don't match with the grading criteria and when you couple this with the tutors not responding to emails it makes achieving even a pass grade difficult to do! Furthermore assignments are not marked within the agreed timeframe. I submitted one in October of last year and I'm still waiting despite chasing for months and being promised it today on the 11th of March. Customer service seems to depend on who you get and the rules for things such as extensions seem to have changed suddenly.

Had I been within my 14 day cooling off period when the first shambolic Unit 1 webinar had been held I would have demanded a refund and found a different provider. I will be asking for a partial refund as the service has not met my expectations for the cost!

Hello Patrick, thank you for leaving a review. Any sort of feedback is appreciated to help us identify our strengths and things we can improve on. Skills4Stem pride ourself on delivering learning experiences that help transform adult education, so we are disheartened to hear that we did not meet your expectations.

Firstly, we would like to apologise for the poor communication you received during your course. Skills4Stem has adopted different teaching styles, such as self learning, to enable candidates to have ownership of their own learning. However, we understand that some may be unfamiliar with this concept and struggle. This is something we will take onboard.

In regard to your assignment, we would like to apologise again for the delay. The effects of the ongoing pandemic have resulted in high levels of backlog. As we use independent markers, this may very well have affected the grading turnaround time. However we can assure you that your assignment was graded on the 15th March 2022.

Please do not hesitate to get into contact with us if you have any further problems.

A bit of a shambles really

As an employer with an apprentice using Skills4Stem my experience of them is very poor. Classes that tutors don't turn up to, classes that tutors turn up to but the students haven't been told about, it's all an absolute shambles. I spent nearly half a day on the phone to them trying to check that an email from someone saying they were Skills4stem asking for my bank details was legitimate. I wouldn't use them again.

I am currently doing Level 4 Building service course. After several cancellations of start dates and the re scheduling of the course schedule, the course has finally began. There are no pre-planned lessons from the tutor and seem to be winging it once on the webinar. The communication from there customer service is between little and none. I could go on for pages on how badly run this company is. Pick another company.

Dear Liam,
Following a quarterly quality review, your specific comment was brought to my attention. Firstly, may I unreservedly apologise for the experience you mention in your comment, and secondly, may I thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Receiving feedback, both positive and negative is the lifeblood of any organisation that is seeking to continuously improve so comments like yours are invaluable.

Turning to your specifics in your comments, you will appreciate that like many organisations we have been dealing with the effects of the pandemic with staff absenteeism. Whilst this is a reason, not an excuse, we have tried to maintain the momentum in all our courses as tutor resources have changed. Clearly, our desire to use only the best in the industry has, in your case, adversely affected continuity during the course.

This also came at a time when we had used the downtime resulting from the pandemic to revisit our systems and processes to underpin the rapid growth we continue to experience. The result was a lag in communication, tutors were perhaps not sufficiently up to speed, and a change in customer service which did not yield the outcomes we had hoped for. As Founder and CEO, I take full responsibility for that and as such have made it my personal priority as we go into 2022.

Once again, thank you for your comments and if you wish to discuss this further please do call and speak to me direct: Sarah Davis FCIOB MIoD, Founder, and CEO.

Excellent course provider. Currently studying a HNC in construction management and have found Skills4stem an excellent provider. Poor communication and an excessive wait for unit marks.

Communication from skills 4 stem is poor. Units take a month or more to mark (almost two months waiting for my most recent unit with no explanation). No reply from tutors when asking for assistance, and when I asked why I was told they were not allowed to help on an individual basis. Webinars are very uninformative and I often left those feeling more confused. Many questions unanswerable and when questioning this was told I had to make an answer fit. Poor training for the money you pay.

Dear Jolene,
Following our recent quarterly quality review, your comments regarding our communication were brought to my attention.
I’d firstly like to thank you for bringing these to our attention. We rely on feedback both positive and negative so we continue on our journey of providing the best apprenticeship courses in the industry.
I thought it worth providing you with some background information. On the issue of marking, it is worth noting that this is done independently to maintain quality across all our modules. Sadly as a result of the pandemic, independent markers have reduced in number and have a high level of the backlog which they are doing their best to get through. I appreciate this may not have been personally communicated to you and for that, I apologise however I can also reassure you that it in no way affects progression through the course.

Your comment on our webinar is of concern to me as, unlike other institutions, we only use industry experts for our course. I have personally made it my job to review these going forward to ensure that the quality on which we have built our reputation has at least been maintained as we navigate the changes forced upon us by the pandemic.

Should we find any drop in our high-quality expectations then this will be adjusted accordingly going forward. As the business Founder, I take your comments seriously, and again thank you for bringing them to my attention. Should you wish to discuss these further, please do not hesitate to contact me direct: Sarah Davis FCIOB MIoD, Founder, and CEO

Good course, good tutors, high staff turnover

Overall the course was very good. The tutors were well informed and helpful, especially towards the end. The only issue I had was that I seemed to have a new Tutor every week up until the end, for the last few months I had Pat who was very good and he was very helpful in getting me over the line to complete everything. Was just hard at the beginning to change tutors almost every session with no explanation because each tutor had different methods of teaching and we had to explain what stage we were at over and over again, would have been nice to get an email saying that a tutor has left the company rather than logging in to find a new tutor each week. I would also email my tutor for support on the assignments to get no response and then find out a week later that he has left the company making it hard to meet deadlines. I also had the same issue with the office staff at skills4stem leaving the company. during my 1 year on the course I would say I had at least 3 office staff and 7 tutors leave without an email to say they had left and a new point of contact given. Some of these issues can be put down to Covid-19 which is understandable but I wouldn't have minded the abnormally high staff turnover if I received an email saying they were leaving and who to contact instead. I was disappointed that site visits were not taking place due to covid and I feel like that added to my work load through the NVQ. The NVQ question packs themselves are ridiculous. The question are repeated and worded very badly, some of them are 12 questions in 1 sentence. I feel like if I don't get a distinction on my HNC I was slightly robbed of this because of time constraints being put on me that were out of my control as tutors were leaving and office staff not getting back to me. I don't want this rating to be a reflection on Pat or any of the other tutors. Just feel this could have been avoided if it was managed better and communication between skills4stem and the students is improved.

Dear DJH,
Your comment was highlighted in our recent quarterly quality review and as Founder and CEO, I wanted to respond personally to some very fair observations.

Firstly congratulations on completing everything for your course. This is very much a testament to your determination given your description of events and although the accreditation is awarded entirely independently, I do hope your work gets the recognition it deserves.

As a specific response, you’ll appreciate that like many organisations we have worked hard to compensate for the effects of the pandemic. However, I need to admit to the fact that I chose the resulting downtime to reset the organisation for the next phase of growth based on confidence derived from the excellent results we have been achieving. It is fair to say that on reflection, we took on too much in one go and this led to a breakdown in our hitherto exceptional communication with learners such as yourself at a time when we were having to dynamically manage the day-to-day challenges of tutor resources. This coincided with us adopting a strategy where we only put the best tutor into different modules on which they were best qualified to benefit you as a learner.
I can see how this might have felt from your point of view, especially if not communicated to you correctly and I can only personally apologise for this. We do have evidence that better learning outcomes result from this approach of putting the best tutors in place rather than just relying on one tutor to cover everything equally well. The challenge comes when one becomes unavailable and this can then have a detrimental effect. I am personally conducting a rank and file analysis of the best way to go forward and ensuring this is then communicated more effectively in the future.

If in the meantime, you wish to speak with me directly: Sarah Davis FCIOB MIoD, Founder and COE then please do make contact.

I wish you a fulfilling career in STEM in the meantime.

Dissatisfied

Having enrolled apprentices on their Smart Home course we found their communication poor. Although they were informed by the HMRC of a funding deadline for applications for employer funding it was never passed on to us. This meant that we failed to acquire our funding, although Skills4stem were on our case to complete sections that related to their funding. We must accept some responsibility of course but at the same time an email out to companies to alert them of the funding deadline would have been simple and saved us thousands in costs.

From a training perspective, to date, it has been sporadic at best although we still receive their quarterly invoices like clockwork.

Dear Matt,
Following our recent quarterly quality review, I wanted to personally address your valuable feedback as both Founder and CEO.

As the only provider to offer a Smart Home course, we are pioneering this in the STEM industry and are proud to be a provider of choice of CEDIA. It is precisely for this reason that I felt it necessary to try and address your concern.

Firstly you will appreciate that we have worked with hundreds of apprentices over the years and each organisation has different funding requirements depending on their situation: levy, non-levy, privately funded and so on. Whilst we try and provide advice where we can, we do not see it as our responsibility to identify funding opportunities/incentives for employers who normally have their own financial departments who do this. That said where a new course is introduced in the industry, it would do us no harm to understand all the funding options more clearly and communicate this if deemed appropriate.

As an organisation, we specialise in building flexible courses around both employer and the learner, unlike the institutional approach which tends to flat pack their courses. The downside of this is that maintaining this flexibility can appear sporadic for those who are more regimented. This is a delicate balancing act to ensure that all learners are kept on board but we have found this has proven to deliver better completion rates with far fewer dropouts. In addition to this, we have been dealing with the impact of the pandemic on the availability of tutors.

The nature of our approach ensures that no courses are ultimately compromised and I am sorry that this had had any adverse impact on the training we are providing to your organisation, I can assure you it should not affect the ultimate completion timetable.

I am reassured that my finance department remain diligent during these difficult times as indeed I would think you would expect from your own.
If I can ever assist in any way in the future, please feel free to contact me directly: Sarah Davis FCIOB MIoD, Founder and CEO and I wish your apprentice every success in the future.
