Warning for anyone renting a car in SIXT Hungary

🚨 Warning for anyone renting a car in SIXT Hungary 🚨
During a recent car rental in Budapest, I clearly refused any additional insurance at the counter. Despite this, the company representative added an extra insurance item ("TG Tire & Windshield Protection") to my contract without my consent, which resulted in a €27.94 charge.
The representative had me sign the documents without properly disclosing that this charge was included. I only discovered it after returning the car.
When I complained, the company dismissed my claim and simply pointed to my signature — instead of acknowledging that their employee acted in a misleading and unfair way.
This practice is unacceptable and dishonest. I want to warn fellow travelers: read every single line of your rental agreement before signing, and don’t rely solely on what the staff tells you at the counter.
Please share so others won’t fall into the same trap.

AVOID THESE SCAMMERS

One Star – Warning: Avoid SIXT Debrecen – Possible Scam

I had a terrible experience with SIXT Debrecen. Ten days after returning my rental car, I was hit with a charge of nearly £400 for a tiny scratch on an alloy wheel—barely visible in the photo they sent. This “damage” was not pointed out during the return (which happened during business hours), and no staff were available to inspect the vehicle with me.

This seems suspiciously like a pattern. After searching online, I found multiple similar complaints. It looks like they conduct a basic inspection when you pick up the car, but on return they examine the vehicle with a magnifying glass to find any minor mark they can bill you for—possibly charging different customers for the same damage.

I believe this is a dishonest and predatory practice. I strongly advise others to avoid renting from SIXT Debrecen.

Thieves

Thieves, they charged us for refueling the vehicle while we received it at 7/8 level. They state themselves: "All vehicles must be refueled to the same level that you received at the time of pick up." They didn't want to admit their mistake and applied a penalty fare which is not fair.

THIEVES!

Their cars are good, their service is good, but at the end of the day they are thieves. There was a tiny scratch on one rim when I left the car, and they charged me 850 Euros for it (the car itself is worth 20-25.000 Euros in the used car market), without my permission. They did not even ask it to me, they just charged the amount, because they can. They have clients' card details, so they can do whatever they want with it. What a scam. The amount was stolen from my card not because the damage costs that much, but because their catalogue says so :) I was never sent a car repair service invoice or something. Their penalties are just arbitrary nonsense numbers. Be careful what you sign when you rent a car. Supposedly, on the signed document when I was renting the car, it was written that the company can charge a client 218.000 HUF + VAT due to a scratch, regardless of how much the damage actually costs. Stay away from this place.

Cheaters and Ripoff

I have rented here twice now and both times they find something they say was caused by me. This time a small crack on the windshield which might have been there before as the vehicle had many scratches. I bought insurance too but they want to charge me more money for the small glass chip. Complete cheaters never rent again steal from people

They sent me a claim of a invisible…

They sent me a claim of a invisible tiny damage that was supposedly done by me. To be fair maybe it was done by me as i would never even think to notice such a thing, but probably not,
However i l'm attaching a photo of this nearly invisible scratch i was charged 105 euros for
Judge for yourself . I have rented a couple 100 times in different contries and was never charged for such a thing

My recommendation is stay away unless you're ready to pay double than the rental amount !!!

They lost me as a customer forever

Smooth experience, no surprises.

I rented a small car for ~13 days from Sixt at Budapest Airport. The price was the best even when compared to the rentals that need shuttle to / from the airport. Picking up / dropping directly from the airport helped me a lot (6am return flight). Everything was transparent, no surprises. The car was an Opel Corsa the same model that I've chosen in the booking. It was clean and had ~10k km, it worked perfectly. Came with national motorway pass. The deposit was reasonable around few hundred euros. Well within an average credit card limit.

This isn't the first time I'm using Sixt and it was always a smooth experience for me. The customer service was very helpful with resolving an issue (I kerbed the wheel a little).

Double charge by Sixt

I reserved a car from Sixt using Travelocity.com. Travelocity required to pay Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) in advance $132 total. When I returned the car Sixt billed me for CDW! I wrote three emails and no reply except the billing company stated that calculating charges is not their business!

DON'T rent a car from this company

DON'T rent a car from this company. I went for the pick-up after already having paid for the whole rental online, only to find out that they then demanded a 2000 euro deposit. They were very quick to show me the fine print of the deal, but there was no information about this during booking (unless I had spent some hours going through the rental agreement). I did not have 2000 euros readily available and there was absolutely no will for problem-solving. Of course a refund was also out of the question.

Called Avis which had a car ready for me in a couple of hours with a normal deposit. Result, ended up paying for two cars.

Avoid, Avoid, Avoid!!!

A classic case of rip off. Avoid them like the plague!
3 out of 3 rentals the cars had a lot more damage than indicated, in one case I had to add 10 (!) unmarked damages to a Meriva, including broken lamp covers not just paint damage left, right and centre.
It seems their "business model" is based on providing the cheapest price at Budapest Airport, prices they seem not to be able to manage as viable, so they make up the balance / profit from ripping off even seasoned renters like myself. (18 year of international rentals under the belt).
First I was told the car had no damage, everything is ok.
Then they sent a bill for a damaged alloy wheel with the picture of a scratched plastic wheel cover. (The car had a cheap steel wheel to hold the winter tire).
I have been charged 82 euro for a damaged wheel which was rusty throughout at the area of damage. They had the audacity to claim in Hungary there is a special rust that eats through painted steel in 24 hours. All the same experts, who cannot tell the difference between an alloy wheel and a steel wheel.
They never call you back, they answer your emails more than 2 days too late to hold your deposit and use it for their own purposes.
They still owe me 840 euros, 5 days after concluding my LAST rental with them.
I called them 3 times, the same number always rings out with a different person.
One agent, who did not want to help just hung up on me and walk out of the office. Their calls are recorded and I assure you I know how to behave - I work in the car industry myself, facing customers.

Avoid this lot! Nothing like Sixt in other countries!

NB. My rental car broker recommended them, who otherwise do the greatest job out their in the car rental business, as you can read it in my other, 5 star reviews.
Just to reassure this is not an out of proportion complaint, this is unfortunately the harsh reality of Sixt Hungary at Budapest Airport.

Learn from my case and avoid them! A few more quid buys proper service and more importantly, PEACE OF MIND!!

NB2
I had to give them two start as at least they were not rude per sé.
