Reviewers frequently mentioned issues with payment, including concerns about debit card policies leading to additional costs and instances where pre-paid services were incorrectly re-charged. Massive deposit demanded by Sixt Croatia.

Sixt Croatia (Zagreb airport) demanded £1,000 deposit on collecting the car, despite having already paid the contract in full before leaving and they also tried to fob us off with Vauxhall Corsa, despite having booked an Opel Mokka.
Now, a week after returning the car and their agreeing everything was in order, the deposit has not yet been refunded.
Looking at other reviews online, this underhand behaviour is apparently routine. I would strongly recommend not using his company.

The Worst Car Hire I have had the…

The Worst Car Hire I have had the displeasure to use.

We arrived to collect our car at Dubrovnik airport having made the booking through Expedia. The queue was long, and the offices were spread out with no apparent organisation.

Once we got into the office to collect the car, the person behind the counter required all of the information I had supplied before my arrival (at their request).

I then got offered the Collission Damage insurance that I had already bought in the UK. Despite saying no 7 times, and showing them the insurance policy, I had, she pushed and pushed and pushed to sell the policy and eventually offering little choice but to take it as she would simply not take a no, and we were onto 30 minutes of conversation.

I then waited a further 30 minutes for the car to arrive, with a bunch of people outside simply not interested.

I complained after the event, only to find that they don't care and that it was all my fault.

It really is a place to avoid, and I simply say that you just should not use them

Biggest scam I've ever met.

Biggest scam I've ever met.

I often rent a car for my work but always with Avis or other rental companies and I never had any complains. This time I rented a car with Sixt for a private vacation and I regret it. We thought Sixt was the cheapest solution to rent a car but when we arrived to pick up the keys they informed us that we had to buy a extra insurance of 25 euros a day since they always find a scratch when you return the car which would cost us more. In other words, when you don't buy the insurance you will get a fine afterwards of at least 500 euros.

The staff is fully awere of the scam and don't care!

Worst company ever, please pay a bit more and book with Avis for example because it will save you money in the end.

AVOID AVOID AVOID!

Awful experience hiring a car in Dubrovnik city centre, Croatia. Read the reviews and do not use them! We picked up a car and had been ‘upgraded’ to a bigger car, that was covered in scratches, didn’t have GPS even though we had paid extra for it so we were given a handheld one but told we got 60 minutes free calls with that one. We had made them aware we were going to Bosnia for a day trip. On route to Kravice waterfalls we get a flat tyre... shouldn’t be a big issue. However we were given a car with NO SPARE TYRE and the liquid tyre repair kit was empty, the fluid has been used up and not replaced. With no options we called the breakdown line and got told as we were in Bosnia they couldn’t do anything they only covered Croatia so to call a different number. The next person we spoke to told us they couldn’t help and to call the original number back who then decided they could do something. The GPS phone they gave us didn’t work so we had to do this on our mobiles and now have £45 charges on our phone bills. We waited 4 hours for a recovery truck and then a 3 hour drive in a truck to Croatia. We only had the car for 5 hours. We spent longer waiting for recovery and sitting in the recovery truck! I then had to go back the next day and wait in line for 45 minutes at the Sixt office to be told ‘we have forgiven the fuel costs’. Following further complaints all I have been given is ‘forgiven fuel’ and no charge for the Sixt insurance. I used Avant car in Split and had a much better experience. This ruined our holiday. Honestly, read the reviews and do not use them.

Pula airport - beware of these crooks

Pula airport - guy at desk was lying about third party excess insurance policies to try and force me to buy their expensive daily policy. When you refuse to buy it their attitude changes, and they start going on about potential damage to car and the need to take a high deposit, and how much risk you are taking on.

When I picked up the car it was dark so couldn't examine the car. The next morning I took pictures - the car had lots of minor scratches and dents. When I took the car back they started claiming that there were additional scratches which there weren't.

It's pretty clear the business model they operate - hard sell on the insurance, and if you refuse then they try to screw you for damage that doesn't exist.

I would seriously avoid these guys as these guys give car hire a bad name.

STAY AWAY

STAY AWAY. STAY AWAY.
We dealt with the office in Pula Airport. They were lying to sell additional services, including unnecessary insurance packages and prepaid gas. In addition, the rented car looked like a wreck. It is the worst car rental company, I have ever done business with and I will stay as far away as possible.

I had a terrible experience with Sixt…

I had a terrible experience with Sixt in Makarska in June. We had booked a 4-door sedan for two days, Alfa Romeo Giulia or equivalent. They are a small office and typically have only a handful of small, compact cars. For us, they had brought a battered old VW Passat from Zagreb. It had dents and scratches literally over its entire body, and had done more than 80,000 km. It was nowhere near an acceptable standard for a rental vehicle, especially from (what I at least thought was) a reputable firm like Sixt.

It took ages to go through all damage to the car at pickup. With the benefit of hindsight, I should have refused to take it. But I could not risk ruining our planned excursions on our holiday by not having a car with room for us.

When handing the car back, Sixt pointed to a scratch on the underside of the front bumper. I did not cause it, but as it was not recorded in the delivery protocol, they made me pay EUR 500 according to Sixt standard repair tariffs. The inspection photos did not show the relevant part of the bumper, as this would have required a photo upwards from below.

I also pointed out that regardless who caused the damage, it would not lead to any additional cost for Sixt. The car was completely covered with scratches and dents, and would require a full body paint to be even sellable. There would be no incremental cost for the unrecorded scratch whatsoever. They agreed, but referred to the rules "forcing" them to charge me.

Those rules are a scam. Sixt should mandate its staff to use their judgement in these situations. Giving the customer a complete wreck of a car, and then having the audacity to charge for repairs which will bring no extra cost for Sixt, for a highly questionable damage case is appalling.

I have only had good experiences with Sixt in Sweden, but after this experience with Sixt Croatia, I will not even consider using Sixt ever again.

Was really worried reading these reviews as we'd already had a car on hire. We'd collected in the dark, so only examined by mobile torchlight in their yard.

Nothing to worry about. No imaginary scratches found on return. Happy to process my final payment on the spot so no later charges can be applied. Staff very happy to let hubby go back and check car for missing items 45 minutes after returning.

Would happily use again.

Car received full of scratches and marked with marker pen circles. It was embarrassing to drive this car around. Overcharged 130EUR as Sixt Dubrovnik pickup advised that I needed to pay Green Card charges, Transit charges through Bosnia & Herzegovina, Ferry permit charges. This proved totally incorrect. Sixt customer service slow to respond and only minor helpful by reducing the overcharge by just 30EUR. I was still out of pocket 100EUR.

I booked a car for 0930 and despite arriving on time, was not able to leave with the car until 1200 due to long queues at the office and then the car not being ready.

This is the first and only time I have had such a delay with a car hire company and it caused us to miss our ferry connection and therefore a very long journey.

I also got stung with additional costs that I wasn't expecting.

I will not be using SixT again.

I made a Trustpilot account just to warn you about Sixt in Pula and Dubrovnik

I made a Trustpilot account just to write this review to warn people. Rented a car in Pula and also Dubrovnik within a 2 week period July 15-27.

Pula: The agent from Pula downtown was extremely nice when receiving the car. However, same issue with the insurance - you must pay between 30 to 100 Euro extra per day (there are 3 levels of insurance to choose from - 1st level is pretty basic, 2nd level covers up to a certain threshold of damage (under 3000 Euro), 3rd level covers all). It's an extra cost they don't tell you about, and after reading all of the bad reviews, I took full coverage at 100 Euros, even though I have full insurance coverage from a credit card. Thank goodness I did!!!!!!!!!!!! The deposit on the credit card was also 1500 Euros - just for a one day rental! When receiving the car, they barely inspect it and just give you the keys without really checking the car, and make you do that work. I did the basics - went around the car, checked for scratches etc., all seemed fine. Then I returned the car at the airport - first of all, the process takes 30 mins to 1 hour upon return, even without anyone in front of you in queue. First, you drop off the car, and they inspect it. Inside, and out. They opened the rear passenger side door (I was 1 person and never used that door), and wanted to charge me for door dings on the inside of the door?? These are the types of things not seen from a normal overview outside inspection of the car. Then for another scratch under a rear tire - also not a normal thing. The agent's explanation was 'more damage is reported upon check out than check in so we need to add all of the damage upon check in when you return the car'. Total scam. Then you go inside, and have to wait at the counter to receive your deposit back - not like other companies where it's automatically returned. They go through a series of questions about your rental with you, and review the damage, before you hand them your card (again) to apparently receive the deposit back. I'm used to handing a company the keys and leaving within minutes, but almost missed my flight because the entire process took 45 minutes for me with only 2 people in front of me (and there were 5 agents so not too much queuing time). The 2 in front of me didn't take full insurance and were charged for 'damages' - plus the time they wasted going through this process - they were furious and stressed about missing their flight. But the SCAM is that when they review the damage, if you don't have full coverage, they go over the type of damage (there are categories, like Level 1 for 1cm scratch, level 2 for 10cm scratch, level 5 car crash, etc) that you have against you, and each category has a pre-printed list with pricing in Euros and correlating photos - all pricing is ABOVE the threshold for either of the first two insurance categories. So, you're screwed if you didn't take the 'full coverage' - and even that I'm questioning.

In Dubrovnik, same thing with insurance levels and higher deposit on the car when you check out a car. Check out agents are always super nice and of course trying to upsell you, but it's their job so I can't hate on them for it. After Pula, I also took full coverage to be safe, though still not sure how 'safe' that means. However, this time I returned the car to Dubrovnik downtown after closing hours - so I just handed the keys to the hotel desk and walked out, no check in inspection or anything with the card. This was 2 days ago so I'm expecting to either receive an e-mail with, again, more issues or to see some money taken from my deposit. At least the return isn't a hassle if you do it this way (I avoided return at the airport after what happened in Pula) - technically you book a car for 24 hours so I set my return time at 23:30 end of the day, even though technically I could've kept the car until 11:00 the next day for a 'full day'. They closed at 20:00 so I missed all staff when I returned the car, and decided to take an Uber from the Hotel Rixos to my Airbnb for the night, and then an Uber in the morning to the airport to not stress.

Rent with Sixt only if you take their full coverage and expect chaos! Might report back once I get my final credit card statements, though I feel like it might take a few weeks....

Be careful with them

The worst car hire experience ever! Avoid like fire!
I was forced into buying extras after being told lies about terms and conditions.
More money has gone from my account than I agreed to.
I've tried to make complaints over the phone and via email but they didn't reply and they don't answer the phone anymore.
If you think that you are about to make smart move by hiring from world known brand then think again. An absolute fraud.

Beware of up selling and listen out for lies

At the branch, I witnessed 4 customers before me being frightened into additional services. One group was told that they could not have a group B car because they had too many people and bags! One was made to have additional insurance because they were under 25 years old and that because of their age and credit card type (visa) they would have to pre pay fuel and return the car empty. When it was my turn, your agent tried her hardest to upsell to the point where it was embarrassing. I told her that I was here on my own, had only hand luggage, that my company had car excess insurance and that I would only be doing 100kms. She tried and failed to sell me an upgrade on the car to a Mercedes (only available today), full to empty fuel (not suitable), that driving in Croatia is difficult because of the lack of road signs (I needed a gps), and full insurance as I would have to get a police report even if my car was scratched. I declined all but asked her again when I had paid and got the paperwork for the key. She said that yes I would need a police report even if my car was scratched by someone else and she started again to sell me the extra insurance. Because of this, I took a video on my phone of the damage on the car along with 80 photos of the bodywork. I just didn’t trust the branch that the car had not been damaged. I found many scratches on the car but the branch said that it was free of damage. I still have those photos. I will never buy from Sixt as I have lost all faith and trust in the company. I guess that the branch staff are paid on bonuses for further sales. The result is that hand overs for cars taken 5 times longer that they need to (I waited 70 minutes and was 5th in the queue), your branch makes lots of profit from customers who do not need the additional products and customer leave not trusting Sixt.

Nice job done by pulling money from us

Nice job done by pulling money from us, Sixt Croatia! We (three girls) booked a car trough an online car rental platform from Sixt. Please note, that we had to pay a reservation fee for this. In addition, we really responsibly selected this car so that it would be convenient for us.
We landed at Rijeka airport, went to Sixt center and provided details of our booking. The Sixt consultant told that they didn't have our booked car for today. Then this consultant began to offer other cars. We trusted this consultant and took a "better, brand new" car , also we understood that we will get a discount for this new car. Unfortunately my friend signed a rental agreement without looking at the price and questioning it. We noticed the huge rental price only later when we sat in the car and were driving from the airport. Moreover, we paid even more than the price provided in the final agreement as a main price were given in euros by Sixt in the final agreement, but finally deducted from us in HRK. So we have lost 50 euros for the unfavorable currency exchange rate. No one mentioned that we will be charged in HRK!
It's our fault also that we were naive and didn't check every detail while renting the car at Sixt office, but I always thought that Sixt as international company provides fair and trustworthy services with transparent pricing, but now I know that NO!
This situation raises questions to Sixt:
-How you plan your services that the car booked in advance is not prepared for the rental?
-What is quality of our service policy in regards to that the clients do not get any discount when you are not able to provided the car booked in advance and your clients are forced to take another car?
And finally numbers: according to our advance booking we had to pay 550 EUR, but we paid 805 EUR. We overpaid 255 EUR - it is 46% more than we expected. Again - well played, Sixt Croatia!

Absolute worst

Absolute worst. Sixt (Split Airport) tried to charge me additional insurance even though I had purchased via Expedia. They said they had no knowledge of the Expedia insurance. While I was distracted by insurance issue the employee used my Debit card instead of Credit card for a deposit. I said “ok, but no money will be removed from my account, correct?” She said “no, this is just a block”. Re: insurance issue, I called two Expedia reps who were unclear and unhelpful. 2 hours later I elected NOT to get the Sixt insurance because an employee said I would still be covered by Expedia, but Sixt would bill me first for any damage and then I would be reimbursed by the Expedia - however, this was NOT stated in writing. Next day, realized Sixt HAD debited $1,363 from my bank account for the “block”. Spent 2 days calling Sixt to ask it be put on my Credit card instead (since I needed that money for cash from ATMs), but NOBODY PICKED UP. I called US Sixt customer service, said I’d have to go back to rental location. So on day 3, I drove 1.5 hours from Tisno back to Split to have a screaming match with the employees about the amount, but nothing could be done, so I had no access to this large sum of money. In order to not worry about whether I was covered by EXPEDIA or by SIXT insurance at this time I purchased Sixt insurance to be safe. When I returned the car Sixt confirmed that THEIR PHONE WAS NOT TURNED ON due to....... an issue with their router. Sixt had given me this number for roadside assistance and said NOT to contact the police. What if I had had a real emergency??? Absolute worst, unclear, unprofessional, measly 35 euro discount for my troubles, ruined a large part of my vacation, never again.

DO NOT HIRE FROM SIXT-ZADAR AIRPORT!!!!

DO NOT HIRE FROM SIXT-ZADAR AIRPORT!!!!

WE ARRIVED IN ZADAR TO FIND THAT OUR PRE-BOOKED CAR WAS NOT AT THE AIRPORT.
THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP SPENT 40 MINUTES TRYING TO SELL US AN UPGRADE, EXCESS CAR INSURANCE AND THEIR FUEL OPTION WHILE WE STOOD OUTSIDE IN THE RAIN. WHEN THE AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED 1500 EURO WAS TAKEN AS DEPOSIT OFF THE CREDIT CARD BECAUSE WE DIDN'T TAKE THEIR INSURANCE. WE WERE TOLD TO WAIT IN THE AIRPORT FOR THE CAR TO ARRIVE (15MINUTES). AFTER HALF AN HOUR I MANAGED TO FIND THE CAR BEING DELIVERED. NO HELP FROM CUSTOMER SERVICE REP (HE OBVIOUSLY WASN'T GOING TO GET WET SHOWING SOME TOURIST WHERE THE CAR MIGHT BE).
WE WERE UNABLE TO SEE ANY MARKS ON THE CAR. EVEN THE ONES THEY SAID WERE THERE I COULDN'T SEE BAR ONE 6MM SCRATCH.
THE INSIDE WAS DIRTY AND WHEN THE CAR DRIED OFF YOU COULD SEE THAT THE OUTSIDE HAD NOT BEEN CLEANED FOR SOMETIME.
BEFORE RETURNING I HAD THE CAR JET WASHED.
ON THE MORNING OF RETURN WE WERE GREETED BY A WORKER WHO EXPLAINED THAT IT WAS HIS SUMMER JOB AS HE WAS AT ZAGREB UNIVERSITY AND HOW BADLY SIXT WERE SCAMMING THEIR CUSTOMERS.
THEN HE DISCOVERED A "SUPERFICIAL MARK" (HIS WORDS) ON A REAR PANEL ( I HAVE THE PHOTOS AND YOU CAN'T SEE IT BECAUSE IT IS / WAS NO MORE THAN A SMUDGE). HE ASSURED ME THAT WE WOULDN'T BE CHARGED.
WE WENT TO SEE THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP WHO TOLD US THAT THERE WOULD BE CHARGE FOR THE DAMAGE. THAT CHARGE TURNED OUT TO BE 493 EUROS.
SHE ALSO TOLD US THAT IF WE HAD TAKEN THEIR INSURANCE THE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A CHARGE. I TOLD HER THAT EFFECTIVELY WAS BRIBERY. SHE WAS UNMOVED AND TYPED OUT THE INVOICE FOR 493 EUROS. I WOULD HAVE STAYED AND ARGUED BUT I HAD SPENT 1 HOUR RETURNING THE CAR AND HAD A PLANE TO CATCH.

I WILL NEVER USE SIXT AGAIN. UNFORTUNATELY THIS CASTS CROATIA IN A BAD LIGHT. WE MET SOME WONDERFUL PEOPLE IN CROATIA AND SOME OF THE SCENERY IS FANTASTIC, HOWEVER WE WON'T BE GOING BACK. LAST MEMORY OF CROATIA LEFT A BAD TASTE.
