We had a 50% surcharge compared to what we reserved online. They didn’t give us any options to choose from; they simply applied it. We picked up our car at Dubrovnik airport. They were mocking us... See more

Is this a scam?
Booked and paid for our car hire. Arrive at Zadar airport and they say it costs extra to take the car to the island as it requires their permission. Their permission costs 45 euro. This is more than 2 days car hire
Avoid at all costs!
Avoid at all costs!
Well before leaving Australia we pre booked a one way rental, pick up Dubrovnik, drop off Zagreb airport at a price we were happy to pay, 326 euros.
We are experienced travellers and have rented cars all over the world, including third world countries. We thought Sixt, being one of the large global companies would be a safe bet. But I now wish I had done my due diligence and read the reviews before booking.
When we arrived to collect the car I was asked if we planned to take a ferry, we said yes, a short trip to one of the many islands. The woman then told us there would be an additional cost of 20 euros PER DAY, if we wanted to take the car on a ferry, even if it was for a single trip. Our rental was for 8 days, so they wanted an additional 160 euros!!
However she said if we took out the comprehensive insurance (which we didn't want, as we have travel insurance for this, ferry cover would be thrown in for free) The comprehensive insurance was an additional 239 euros and she said we could just drop the car off with no worries if we had this.
I knew I was being conned somehow, but we were on a schedule and not in a position to make alternative arrangements, so reluctantly I signed the rental agreement for 545 euros!
I asked the woman for the piece of paper she had written the cost of the ferry on and she refused to give it to me, saying she needed it.
Later that day we rang several other Sixt locations in Croatia and asked about the ferry cover. Surprise, surprise, yes there is an additional cost but it's capped at 44 euros per rental period. There is absolutely NO mention of this charge anywhere on their website.
We have emailed the Croation HQ of Sixt and written to the CEO, A .Anticus, directly but it comes down to the fact that they have a signed contract and they are completely disregarding the heart of my complaint which is we were blatantly lied to and falsely coerced into signing the agreement.
I will not be dealing with Sixt again in any country.
AVOID, total scammers
You'll no doubt be attracted by the low cost rates this car rental company offers as we were. This is to entice people to choose Sixt and like us you're probably wondering why so cheap? Well we found out the hard way. Upon returning the vehicle undamaged our credit card got hit with a $950 charge for vehicle damage. We took photos before and after we got the vehicle with pics clearing showing the damage was there before we picked up the vehicle. We sent off the photos to their customer service team proving the damage was pre-existing. Did they care? No! Nothing heard even after repeated requests. It seems part of their business model is to retain credit card information and charge people for damage that is already there. Please don't get caught like us, and simply avoid this company.
Hired a car via booking.com for 4 days…
Hired a car via booking.com for 4 days from Sixt at Split Airport. It’s an absolute scandal in this day and age that rental companies are allowed to rip off customers. The insurance charge at the customer desk was over 60 euros a day!!! Then they told a barefaced lie about the petrol. You are given a full tank and charged for it via your credit card and told that upon the cars return you will get the unused fuel credited back to your card. THIS IS A LIE. I’d say avoid them but other companies are no better.
hustler company.
hustler company.
I have reserved and booked the car on Sixt site in Belgium for 289 euro Renault Capture. When we arrived they filled the bill with a lot of assurances, road assistance, tire assurance and we arrived at the price of 501 euro. They give us a car Opel Mokka full of scratches. Today we have returned the car in Zadar and the young lady at the sixth service tellend us that everything was ok and we may go inside to the Servicepoint of Sixt. There arrived the lady tell us that the tank was not full, only 7/8, while we just tanked the car full by the nearest tank station. This firm is scandalous, the totally price for us was 540 euro. We have paid 30 euros surplus for driven 15 km from the nearest tankstation to the airport. For us never the firm of SIXT
Euro 460 for a slow puncture - wish I had seen their rating first
Gave us a time slot to collect car, then arrived to find a huge queue. One hour later we were given keys and had to find the car in the car park ourselves. When we switched on the ignition, the air pressure warning came on, but we assumed that the car would have been properly pre-checked and put this down to the extreme heat. We had already lost an hour and drove off. On return they found a nail in the tyre. We had paid insurance but not the additional extra tyre and window cover. I replace my UK tyres for £120 max. They now want Euro 460 for a slow puncture on one tyre. No further warning lights came on during the trip to Lakes and Split. I have seen the other reviews and I think this is a reoccurring theme. I honestly believe we were given an unchecked car with existing issues but can’t prove it. We had a plane to catch on returning the car at the airport and no time to argue. We just had to sign everything to make our flight. I warn others that Sixt can spoil your holiday. Go with another car hire firm with a good rating.
Arrogant service and a scam business.
Never will i ever use SIXT again
Never will i ever use SIXT again, such a hustler company.
Alt for mange skjulte gebyrer, hun sagde at de betalte for en tank benzin som en del af deres service, så vi skulle bare efterlade den så tom som mulig.
They filled the bill or invoice with 4-5 extra fees whitout letting us know.
Refused to give my rental I paid for…
Refused to give my rental I paid for asked for £2200 deposit
Do not trust Sixt Zagreb!
I am wanting to write this email to warn all future customers considering renting with Sixt in Zagreb- do not. If you read all the other experiences, they are true.
Like many of the customers before me, I declined all their offers of insurance, roadside assistance etc and said I just wanted to rent the car.
They will not tell you that they add it on anyway and you don't find out until you get home and ask for an invoice. When you complain, they say you signed to agree to it all. That's not true. You are not given an invoice at the end of the rental. I had to ask for one when I got back to Australia after seeing my credit card payment that they took out.
Beware of the deceitful, dishonest and false assertions they make. Do not trust what they say!!
I am an honest and trustworthy person who doesn't mind occasionally when things go wrong, but I hate being ripped off when it is clearly wrong and they dismiss you.
Unfriendly and unprofessional
Unfriendly, unprofessional, and unskilled. We tried to get some help to mount the two baby chairs we ordered, but that was out of the question and not of any interest to the person we talked to. Customer handling at a very low level.
BEWARE! PREPAID FUEL, FRAUDULENT CHARGES
BEWARE!
1. They will not ask you about prepaid fuel charges. They will just bill you.
2. I purchased ALL possible CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) coverage when booking online. At the airport, I was told it didn't cover the tires or the windshield and was told I needed to pay an additional $25.
3. I was charged $90 for some unknown reason after I got home and was reviewing my credit card statement.
An impossible charge as I paid for: theft protection, extended theft protection, minimum excess CDW, collision damage waiver CDW and roadside assistance.
I have now spent over 4 hours of my life trying to resolve this with no success yet.
Genuine Mistakes or a Scam?
My wife & I picked up a pre-booked VW T-Roc car at the Sixt office in Rovinj, Croatia on 6 June. The car seemed in good condition.
However, when we returned the car to this office on 11 June, a small superficial scratch in the middle of the rear bumper was found almost immediately.
Sixt staff alleged that this was “new” damage which must have happened during our rental of the car. The branch manager insisted that I would have to pay the full excess of €250 and sign 2 forms under duress.
We had taken photographs of the car both at pick-up and on return. On review of these photographs later that day, we found that this same small scratch was present when we picked up the car on 6 June!
Once back in the UK, I made a complaint to the Sixt head office in Zagreb on 16 June and enclosed copies of the 2 forms and the photographs of the rear of the car on pick-up and on return. The latter proved that this was not “new” damage and so I sought repayment of the €250 (the full excess) as well as a refund for the “in-car GPS system” which had not been provided.
The staff in Sixt office in Zagreb prevaricated for 11 days at which time they accepted that there had been an “unintentional mistake” and they had closed the case. However, as no refund had been provided 3 days later, I queried the transaction with Barclaycard who froze the full amount charged.
Eventually Sixt repaid the full excess of €250 and the amount charged for the missing in-car GPS system. However, this required a huge amount of effort on my part - over 10 e-mails to Sixt and on-line forms that had to be completed for Barclaycard.
In summary, we will NOT be renting a car from Sixt in the future and, take my advice, you need to take a full set of photographs at pick-up and on return of a rental car.
Hidden costs
I only have positive experiences earlier from Sixt, but my experience with Sixt Aplit airport is horrendous. Despite having full coverage, they take a huge fee in deductible (1200 euro).
We never choose the pre-paid fuel option, but when you collect your car they say that it's the way and there's no option. This means that they're charging you for a fuel tank of gas. We had two cars, one car was empty at return, the other had one quarter. They took the same amount for both cars.
We were told that if we wanted to go to an island, we needed an extra insurance but that we could just call in the same day and they would fix it. On the website, and on site, the price would be like 6 euro per day. So we called a specific day, said that we needed to take the car to Brac for a day. When returned, we got a bill for 43 euro per car for the ferry-trip. They told us that they have to charge us for the whole vacation, not just one day.
Choose another rental-company if you don't want to be scammed.
Sixt stole money from my credit card…
Rented a car from Sixt Zadar airport and all seemed ok until we got back home. They added CDW and breakdown insurance which I made a point of declining. Effectively they stole 80 euros from my credit card. Be warned that they employ underhand practices to extort money from their customers.
Rijeka Airport - only a good experience
Despite the bad rating we had only a good experience using Sixt. We rented 2 cars for a week. The handovers were quick and everything was fine. We were informed with all relevant information, we didn't buy assurance since we had our own private insurance. No problems about that.
Shameless scammers, STAY AWAY!
When you visit their branch, they will play a game of deception, ill intentioned malpractices and coercion BECAUSE the employees are ONLY paid when YOU AGREE to BUY their so called OPTIONAL services. They are ruthless, shameless and just plain inhuman, I am just shocked how can this kind of business exist, is it because it is Croatia? Or is it Sixt? Or a lethal combination of both? If you booked a rental online for 30 Euros a day, you go to pick up your vehicle, you will come out frustrated, dejected, lost and angry because these hawkish employees made you forcefully, tactfully sign an agreement that now costs 80 Euros a day. This does not belong in 21st century! THIS practice SHOULD be Criminal!
Avoid like the plague
Avoid like the plague. The agents are not to be trusted.
I asked for an excess of €825, the agent said that’s what he’d put in, it did take him 3 attempts due to “IT” issues but I think that was just to keep me waiting so I wouldn’t check the contract. He actually put in €0 excess.
He also told me that there are no fuel stations in the area and I’d save money using their refuel service.
He was wrong on both counts. There was a fuel station just 5 miles from Zadar airport and I passed 5 within 5 miles on the way back.
I was charged the equivalent of 480 Kunar, with a tank that was almost have full. I filled up from warning light to fill for 300 Kunar.
Clearly they get bonuses for selling extras and don’t care how they get them.
Well this cost me over €200 but it will cost Sixt a lot more.
If you choose to ignore my advice, then go through the contract with a fine tooth comb. Not sure it will help as I’m sure they will find another way to scam you.
There only response, you signed the contract. Guilty as charged but if they employed people you can trust, you should never have to worry about that.
Don't let them fool you - find a serious provider instead.
Don't let them fool you. find a serious provider instead. Would not recognize the insurance from mastercard and insisted on selling very expensive insurance, the short word is scam, don't use them.
Scam Artists!
We initially thought that the experience with this SIXT site was a pleasant one. It was an easy drop-off and pick-up. However, they scam you out of money. The lady in the office told us lies as she said we would save money if we refuelled using their services (We were told we would save up to 10 euros). We did not return the car with full fuel, as advised. We noticed a £66 charge for refuelling when reviewing our invoice, although we only used half a fuel tank. Not only did they charge us for a full tank of fuel, but they also charged us a refuelling fee (which we were never told about or agreed to). We also noticed that they charged for theft protection and roadside assistance, neither of which I had agreed to. In reaching out to Customer Service, they insisted I had agreed to these terms at the office, and they said that we would not get refunded for any unused fuel.
It is unacceptable that they con you out of so much money and then blame you for following their advice. Never again will we use your services.
